Media Picks: Disagreement on Gonzaga or Duke for a Top Seed; Tennessee, Middle Tennessee or Kentucky for Final Spot
This year’s bracket forecasts are fairly uniform in the teams that are in the field. Once again, though we might claim to be correct on 67 out of 68 or whatever, this really comes down to a few teams. For this year’s media sample of projections, I used the following: Jerry Palm of CBS, Joe Lunardi of ESPN, Andy Glockner of Sports Illustrated, Dave Ommen of NBC College Basketball Talk, and Patrick Stevens of USA Today. In addition, I include Basketball Predictions, and Crashing the Dance, which is a site that uses computer algorithms based on RPI and record vs. Top 50, Top 100 compared to past candidates to try to project the field.
When it comes to the #1 Seeds, there really is a lot of agreement, though many others are clamoring for teams like Miami, it has settled to five teams. Everyone is in agreement on Louisville, Indiana, and Kansas, except for Crashing the Dance (which has Indiana in the 5th spot, just missing). The issue is Duke or Gonzaga, with Palm, Lunardi, Basketball Predictions (and myself) having Gonzaga, and Dauster, Stevens, and Glockner going with Duke.
Meanwhile, the bubble seems to be pretty tight this year. Everyone has La Salle at the bottom of the at-large entries, but all have them in. Everyone is either going to correct or wrong on that one together. St. Mary’s, Villanova, and Boise State all appearing near the bottom, but in for everyone.
So it comes down to four teams that comprise the disagreement for one final spot.
Middle Tennessee: Lunardi, Stevens (and myself)
Tennessee: Palm, Glockner, Ommen
Kentucky: Crashing the Dance
Virginia: Basketball Predictions

Sorry for firing off in the previous post. I’m just frustrated after this bullshit season I just “enjoyed.” The basketball critic in me thinks UK should get a bid for their entire body of work. It wasn’t great, but hell, A LOT of teams can make that same claim.
Part of me wants to get in because, even though they’d probably lose in the first round, UK has done (JUST) enough to earn the right to defend their title. On the other hand, the other part just wants this miserable season to be over…
March 17th, 2013 at 5:59 PM
I hope they get in and not as one of those play-in teams
Does anyone remember who was in Gottlieb’s spot on the panel last year? It’s driving me nuts.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:02 PM
Please update this post after, with who ‘won’, but also if anyone made it/got left out that everyone agreed on.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:03 PM
Part of me wants to see them get left out, because I love making fun of reactionary/over-the-top fan bases. I really don’t think in or out, anyone can complain too much, especially from a school that had plenty of chances.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:04 PM
Also, include TBL taking Maryland over MTSU on the list. If he’s right, he’ll earn some bragging rights.
I do wonder if those other 67 teams are right though, because there is always one surprise, right?
March 17th, 2013 at 6:05 PM
WWoS – I’ve got a post for you back in the earlier post where you hurt my feelings.
I never bagged on you. You have me mixed up with someone else. If I made a joke with you involved (WWoS v Ty) it is meant as a joke. No harm.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:06 PM
Agreed, and I will not if UK doesn’t make it in. The fun will be watching the fanbase react to a potential NIT bid.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:06 PM
Oregon kinda got jobbed. Hope they beat OSU
March 17th, 2013 at 6:06 PM
Well… MTSU and Saint Mary’s in.
Was Saint Mary’s in?

Who picked Oregon over both?
March 17th, 2013 at 6:08 PM
Who picked Oregon over both?
That’s not what I meant. Tomorrow is going to be a long day.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:08 PM
…and that winner gets Memphis on Thursday. I may need to take a long walk on Thursday. Maybe all the way to Pueblo.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:08 PM
Also surprising… an 11 seed as the play-in? That’s a lot of crappy auto-bid teams then, right?
March 17th, 2013 at 6:10 PM
Tennessee is fucked. Glad I didnt have to wait the whole show to know it.
Ill say right now that Midwest Region is LOADED. Will be by far the toughest region.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:12 PM
Lunardi nailed it. KU is the #2, #1. Color me still happy he steals money from ESPN.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:12 PM
I wish someone would keep track of if the “loaded” regions end up being good, or if a lot of the noise before the tourney is way off.

March 17th, 2013 at 6:20 PM
South Region already looks tougher.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:21 PM
I love our draw, Joe. However, I have a feeling KU vs Michigan would be a hell of a game. That’s the beauty of the Tourney.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:22 PM
I’d agree.

Debating what to see this week. Not too excited about either of those. Explosions – yippee.

Fock! Committee giving UNC a #8 seed? I thought they were worth a maybe a 5, definitely a 6 with they have have been playing the last 6 weeks.
Possible matchup with KAN in the 2nd round. Gotta get by VIL first. no easy game there.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:23 PM
Florida gtown
March 17th, 2013 at 6:24 PM
The way the committee is seeding the Pac12, I fully expect UA to get a 9 out west.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:24 PM
Agree Joe. GI Joe more believable IMO. Gerard Butler saves the world all by himself! LOL.
GI Joe, it takes a team take down COBRA!!!
And knowing is half the battle.

ACC is getting Pac-10 levels of disrespect this year.

In Kansas City. And Roy is scared of KU. I’d be pissed if I was a UNC fan.

March 17th, 2013 at 6:29 PM
KU is 6-0 at the Sprint Center this year. UNC has just been fucked. Not only a lower seed than I thought, but put in the backyard of a fanbase that hasn’t really forgiven Williams. No matter what they say. It will be an interesting week that will get old by 6:00 pm tomorrow about, “Has Kansas forgiven Roy Williams?” That is the wrong question, but that is the question that will be asked.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:29 PM
Waiting on Django and Argo to hit Redbox. I had wanted to see Django and heard mixed wide ranging opinions about Argo. I figure for a dollar it can’t be that bad. It takes a really shitty movie to rent it for a buck and want your money back.

Sir, I’m just being objective. Because, as always, fuck the Heels. Hated them before Williams left. Dean Smith is a traitor.

At least it’s in SLC.
Really hope the Pac12 rises up this year
March 17th, 2013 at 6:34 PM
Love these guys on ESPN selling every possible upset
March 17th, 2013 at 6:35 PM
I had a sinking feeling Pitt was gonna draw the 1 seed if they win in round 1.
On the plus side, they could totally take Gonzaga. Or lose to Wichita St.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:35 PM
There’s ole miss. Wisconsin zags tho
March 17th, 2013 at 6:36 PM
So Cal as a 12, is more highly regarded than MTSU and Saint Mary’s as 11s, since they are the play-in game?
March 17th, 2013 at 6:36 PM
Reseeding after each round would be sweet sweet chaos
March 17th, 2013 at 6:37 PM
How do you guys like seth Greenberg in the studio?
March 17th, 2013 at 6:38 PM
Osu zona
March 17th, 2013 at 6:40 PM
On the plus side, they could totally take Gonzaga. Or lose to Wichita St.
I can see WSU and Pitt beating Gonzaga. I plead ignorance to that I’m in bed when there games are usually on and have only seen them five or six times this year. It is based on most years to sell Gonzaga earlier than most in the tourney. Which has no basis on this year’s team, but it falls in line with how I make picks in the brackets. People overvalue them when making their pics.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:40 PM
I pretty much hate everyone that does college basketball in the studio on ESPN and CBS. Greg Anthony is alright.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:41 PM

March 17th, 2013 at 6:44 PM
Can’t wait to see what bracketing snafu caused Oregon to get dropped from an 11 to a 12.
Even an 11 is too low
March 17th, 2013 at 6:45 PM
I pretty much hate everyone that does college basketball in the studio on ESPN and CBS. Greg Anthony is alright.
Joe – You mean Seth Davis?
I was bitching earlier about how Gottleib’s and Davis’ back and forth was mildly entertaining, but not it is just awful. Gottlieb can’t play nice and gets Davis into a sniveling mess. Brown will interrupt them mid-argument because the argument is insipid and move on to the next topic/nontopic. At least it is real and not contrived, scripted BS ESPN has.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:46 PM
The main problem with snubs is that they would destroy many of ofthe higher seeds. Not sure of a fix other than no AQs for the weaker conferences
March 17th, 2013 at 6:47 PM
I had to change the channel earlier today. Can’t stand Jay Bilas. Get over yourself jerk off.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:47 PM

Oh, I’m on CBS. I don’t do the ESPN non-game experience thing. Although, as noted, CBS is a bit grating right now. Not too horrible, but CBS should let Anthony and Davis do the analysis and let Gottlieb have a five minutes opinion segment. He shouldn’t be allowed to interact with people.
March 17th, 2013 at 6:52 PM
Vez, saw ZDT a few weeks ago. Made me want to go back to the desert (no joke). I miss being in theater.
On topic, I look forward to Thursday, just to see the massive amounts of games. I love this time of year.

Oh, hell yes. Don’t sell too early. Lots of Whine and Cheese KU fans will do an impulse buy after the first game. And they are rich. “We must be at the Roy Williams game to sneer at him.” Same people that funded his contract when he saved KU during and after probation.
