March Madness 2013: The Gonzaga Bulldogs are in the NCAA Tournament
We’ll be doing NCAA Tournament profiles for all automatic bid conference winners leading into the NCAA Tournament. See below for previous team profiles.
Conference/Record: West Coast (31-2)
Location: Spokane, Washington
Famous Alums/Attendees: Jason Bay learned how to take advantage of baseball economics at Gonzaga, John Stockton of course went there, and his son is on the team now. Bing Crosby crooned to co-eds in Spokane once upon a time.
Social Media: @ZagMBB is the official team account. Slipper Still Fits is a team blog for the ‘Zags.
Random Fun Fact: Gonzaga became the first West Coast Conference team since San Francisco in 1977, with Bill Cartwright at center, to be ranked #1 in the country.
Tournament History/Most Recent: Gonzaga made its first appearance in 1995, and has now made fifteen straight NCAA appearances, going back to the Elite Eight run in 1999. The Zags lost to Ohio State in the “third round” last year, and last appeared in the Sweet Sixteen in 2009 with a loss to Duke as a 4 seed.
Record against Projected At-Larges/Bubble Teams: 7-2
Good Wins/Bad Losses: Gonzaga has only lost twice this year, a last second defeat at Butler in improbable fashion, and at home to Illinois. Gonzaga swept the Big XII (Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Kansas State) and beat St. Mary’s three times.
Notable Player(s): Kelly Olynyk is one of the best big men in the country and an All-American candidate. He is very good at running the floor as a seven footer, and his unexpected emergence has been a difference in going from a ranked team to #1 in the country. Elias Harris is the versatile power forward, and Kevin Pangos leads the offense at the point. You will love Mike Hart, a former walk on, who is the defensive specialist/glue guy at starter, and has taken only 33 shots all year. He’s made 20 of them.
All-Important Rankings: RPI (6), Ken Pom (4), SevenOvertimes (5).
Outlook/Seed: Gonzaga should be the #1 seed in the West. The situations that might move them to a #2 would be either Louisville or Georgetown winning the Big East, one of the other top contenders beating Indiana and winning the Big Ten, Kansas winning the Big XII, and Miami winning the ACC tourney. At least two of those things would need to happen to make it a close call.

Gonzaga not being a #1 seed while carrying the #1 ranking would be kind of awesome.

Butler is a bubble team? I think they’re in pretty easily. And Illinois beat the #1 ranked team twice this year, including the Zags on the road, knocked off the above mentioned Butler, beat Ohio State, Minnesota twice, won the Maui Classic, has a top 10 SoS, and played in easily the best and toughest conference. Bubble team? Come on, you’re better than that…right?

UDub broke off our rivalry with the Zags about 6 years ago because we refused to ever go east of the mountains to play in Spokane. We took the stance that they needed to play us more than the opposite. Fucking pisses me off more and more each year.

Wherefore art thou Andres Hidalgo?
March 14th, 2013 at 6:04 PM
Zags have weak competition hurdle for many
March 14th, 2013 at 6:05 PM
Ds2…what in the hell are you babbling about…where does Lisk call Butler or Illinois a bubble team?

Wherefore art thou Andres Hidalgo?
His scathing takedown of Horizon League secondary market ticket prices is just waiting in the wings.

now I’m rooting for this. has to be a first time for everything.
to be fair, Spokane IS kind of a dump.
March 14th, 2013 at 6:08 PM
I know it isn’t J-Mac’s doing, so I give him a personal pass…but allowing a scumbag ticket broker to buy a post on here comes close to the lowest this site has ever stooped.

Absolutely, but instead of bucking up and traveling (4 hrs) every other year and playing a game that people outside of the NW might possibly care about, we just have Some chump like Cleveland St come to town.
March 14th, 2013 at 6:21 PM
Oh yeah? Does your town claim ryne sandberg and have a tulip festival?
Didn’t think so

Gonzaga’s only two losses? Illinois and a buzzer beater to Butler. while their conference is weak, it says something to go 16-0 in the conference while beating those teams by 20 points on average. The second best team in the WCC, Saint Mary’s, lost to Gonzaga by 5 in Spokane, 17 at home, and 14 in the WCC title game. Gonzaga went out of conference with those two losses to Illinois and Butler while beating Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, and Davidson. (They also beat on bad big conference teams like Clemson, West Virginia, and Washington State.) They’re a lock for a #1 along with Indiana (if IU wins the big ten tourney)

Don’t throw victory margin at me ap. Means squat
March 14th, 2013 at 6:26 PM
oh..so beating your rival by 17 points on their home court means nothing? I see.
March 14th, 2013 at 6:30 PM
Is this person I’ve never heard of worth googling?
March 14th, 2013 at 6:33 PM
Don’t throw victory margin at me ap. Means squat
remember that next time you are looking for a late cover…
March 14th, 2013 at 6:35 PM
and it definitely didn’t mean anything for Georgetown to beat Syracuse by 11 at the Dome. Nope..breaking a team’s 39 game home winning streak. nothing.
/reminds self that Vez has been day drinking

Only a baseball Hall of Famer
March 14th, 2013 at 6:41 PM
You recognize every major sports hall of famer by name?
March 14th, 2013 at 6:45 PM
Well I caved in and clicked one of those extra bullshit links. Had to see what complaining Vonn had to do in regards to officials. I will not sleep any better/worse tonight.

Sandberg played relatively recently and was voted in over the last decade. it’s not that crazy to recognize him. it’s not like he’s one of the bozos from the 1910′s that the veteran’s committee seems to vote in every year.
March 14th, 2013 at 6:57 PM
You must not have ever heard me mention that I haven’t watched an inning of baseball since I was 13.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:00 PM
He played for the Cubs when they were not a complete dumpster fire on an annual basis. That is pretty notable.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:03 PM
236 for 236 on sporcle.com’s Baseball Hall of Fame quiz, motherfucker
March 14th, 2013 at 7:03 PM
Fuck it, I looked it up. First appearance in MLB was 7 years before I was born. Last appearance was when I was 9. That’s not shocking I don’t know who he is.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:07 PM
oh. then we are from separate worlds, my friend.
March 14th, 2013 at 7:08 PM
And as stated, I stopped watching baseball when I was 13, and completely stopped giving any shit about it a few years later when I quit playing. I bet I couldn’t name 20 Hall of Famers.

Record against Projected At-Larges/Bubble Teams: 7-2
Sorry to wake you Sherlock, if neither is a bubble team it would (should) say “Record against Tournament Bound Teams”
Back to sleep Jay, sorry to wake you…

Tell me about this tulip festival. Only know of a couple places that have those.
March 14th, 2013 at 11:41 PM

March 14th, 2013 at 11:50 PM
Sorry angry…. it’s lilacs
March 15th, 2013 at 8:59 AM
