Brian Hartline Signed a $31 Million Contract, Still Works at a Drive Thru Convenience Store
Brian Hartline signed a 5-year, $31 million contract to remain with the Miami Dolphins last week. On Wednesday afternoon, Hartline went on the Dan LeBatard Show to chat about his contract. During the interview, Hartline casually mentioned that he was too busy working a drive thru to keep up with football news that day. LeBatard laughed it off, but was then amazed when he realized Hartline was serious. It turns out that Hartline and a friend own-and-operate a drive thru convenience store in Ohio. Brian Hartline will not be one of those broke athletes after he retires. [Philly Inquirer via @matt_mullin]

wow, so ESPN DID suspend Simmons from Twitter for a few days because he openly criticized First Take on Twitter. Pussies

Lenny Dykstra’s car wash business has definitely kept him out of financial trouble.

They didn’t need a token white guy for twitter, just NBA coverage.

Yep. No small businessman has ever put too much into his business and then become overextended. Never once in history.

Drivr thru cstores are a rough go businesswise or there would be more of them
March 14th, 2013 at 5:27 PM
It’s just amazing that they’ll suspend Simmons and fire Rob Parker but Skip Bayless and Cowherd get off scot free for their direct, slanderous attacks on athletes

That said i may just pitch this to one of my clients

I think the sponsored post that just went up might be the most nuanced baseball post in this site’s history.

I really enjoyed this… Hartline was pretty funny about it.

Convenience store clerk is the most likely job for OSU grads. That and meth cooker.

I also am pretty sure Dykstra waasn’t grabbing a sponge and a hose in the off-season.

Nova-Ville and Irish-Marquette tonight in BE tourney.
Mavs-Spurs, Knicks-Blazers on TNT. Blazers should pound the knicks. No Melo, Amare, or Chandler

Baseball: four bases + three strikes + two foul lines and a pitcher = steroids and a dying sport

Me too. Great forum for laughing at the die-hard fandom of Red Sox and Yankees fans.

this year our chant is “We’re Number Four!”.

You’re an Orioles fan, right? Should we make a “wins” bet?
March 14th, 2013 at 5:38 PM
Ap as soon as my goalies play you’re going down
March 14th, 2013 at 5:39 PM
I’m really starting to buy into them, despite the prominence of Lackey/Gomez and Ortiz’ injury. I really don’t know why the hell, except that apparently I’m convinced Lester/Buch are going to be Cy candidates.
March 14th, 2013 at 5:40 PM
I’m hoping that Carp and Overbay make the roster so Gomez can GTFO.

You mean Red Sox vs. O’s? Not really since I think both of them were at the extreme edges of what they could have been last year but what did you have in mind?

We talkin First Take up in here?

Vegas O/U for Baltimore is 79. Way too low. Boston is at 83. Switch them until Boston proves otherwise. Yankees and Rays at 86. Take over for Rays, under for Yanks. BlueJays at 90. slightly under.
March 14th, 2013 at 5:43 PM
just waiting for Darrell to come in and defend the honor of First Take and its clowns

Considering the train wreck that the Yankees are developing into and the fact that Toronto, no matter how many free agents they add, always seems to find a way to be average at best, I don’t blame you for being optimistic.

Tampa Bay’s rotation makes me cry.

ms621, how many wins you hoping for with Houston in their first AL year?

I’d say 79 is pretty realistic for Baltimore. The only starting pitcher I feel good about is 20 years old and probably has a cap of around 145 IP for the year. I just hope Brian Roberts can get through a year without killing himself.

Vez says PECOTA says 63. That seems reasonable to me.

He’s alive? Love listening to him and his dad talk about baserunning. The hop he does when stealing second and third are incredible. You know, if you’re into that sorta stuff

arguing the sky isn’t blue
Technically, it isn’t….
March 14th, 2013 at 5:52 PM
That’s a really low # from PECOTA, isn’t it? What were they last year?
March 14th, 2013 at 5:57 PM
I knew some asshole was going to do that. Endless wanks to you, sir (no coop)

55-107 in 2012. 56-106 in 2011. I think they’ll catch some luck with the Pena and Bedard signings. And maybe Ankiel too. Chris Carter was a great addition by Luhnow as he seems tailor made for Minute Maid Park. A 30 home run season is not out of the question for him.

I liked that Lowrie trade for the Astros.
March 14th, 2013 at 6:04 PM
I think the Yankees are suspect, and will go as far as their top 3 SPs drag them (similar to Red Sox). I refuse to buy any off-season champions like Toronto till I see it. I’m not convinced the Orioles are legit beyond that they’ll beat the Red Sox in horrific and confusing ways. And while Tampa is good, I don’t see them hitting enough to obliterate the division.
I’d take over 83 for the Red Sox, and as I said last week, expect them to be ‘sort of’ in the hunt at the break. 86 wins with a few games that matter down the stretch would be a successful season during a bridge year.

I do too. Peacock might turn into a solid pitcher for us, but it’s Carter that I really like. Stassi was added just because we’ve got zero depth at catcher and nothing in the pipeline. A guy who was supposed to be our catcher of the future (can’t recall his name at the moment) nearly died from a Staph infection about 6 or 7 years ago and then never really came back from that. Ever since then we’ve relied on people like Humberto Quintero, Chris Snyder, J.R. Towles and Carlos Corporan.
I got physically ill just writing out that last sentence.
March 14th, 2013 at 6:05 PM
I laughed at this, and I cried at this.
Definitely going under. Pessimistic about them though
March 14th, 2013 at 6:08 PM
I really thought Towles was a good player when he was coming up. I don’t know which baseball site gave me that impression but I need to remember it so I know who to cut off from my reading rotation.
March 14th, 2013 at 6:08 PM
The way I figure it, health is the big issue. I don’t think you can count on Ortiz at all, but if Ellsbury hits in his walk year, and Victorino is decent… you don’t need a lot out of a LF platoon where Gomes has an .894 OPS against LHPs, and Nava has a .768 OPS (.369 OBP) vs. RHPs.
I could see Iglesias (who really worked at hitting this winter and looks much better at the plate) being brought up fairly early if the team is decent, but there just isn’t much hitting depth in the minors. (I’m way down on Lavarnway, as always).
March 14th, 2013 at 6:10 PM
I’m always pessimistic on the Red Sox and Pats. The years I’m not, they always collapse. I’m sure I’m doing the internet equivalent of fucking a billy goat with Babe Ruths dick right now.
March 14th, 2013 at 6:15 PM
I was far more bullish on the Rays before seeing that the bottom half of their lineup includes James Loney, Jose Molina, Kelly Johnson and Yunel Escobar. yeesh. pitching should still be great though.

The Astros were big on him for awhile. But he just couldn’t figure out big league pitching. He was a hole in the lineup. I think he’s trying to make it on the Cardinals now.
March 14th, 2013 at 6:23 PM
stark, Chen should be good again and Hammel will be solid if he avoids injury. No more Mark Reynolds striking out 200 times for baltimore! Enjoy him, Indians fans!
March 14th, 2013 at 6:25 PM
the AL West is going to be absolutely nasty. A’s, Angels, and Rangers will be really good and Seattle is improved. Those will be fun games to watch
