Booed and Struggling, Carmelo Bails in the Third Quarter of Blowout Loss to Nuggets, to the Surprise of His Teammates
Carmelo Anthony’s return to Denver was an unpleasant one, as he was lustily booed during player introductions, then missed nine of the 12 shots he took, and the Knicks were blown out by the Nuggets, 117-94 in a game that was never close. With New York trailing by 26 in the third quarter, Melo called timeout, and instead of join the rest of the team in the huddle, he appeared to tap a trainer and let him know he was out. It didn’t look like he mentioned it to any of his teammates (who looked puzzled) or even his coach – Anthony just made the executive decision that 21 awful minutes of playing time were enough, and the remainder of this rout was best viewed from the friendly confines of the locker room.
Early prognosis is that Anthony is heading back to New York to have his knee drained. He’ll obviously miss tonight’s game in Portland, and probably the last two games of the road trip (Clippers, Jazz) and maybe more (Orlando, Toronto, Toronto).
The Knicks fell to 38-24, and are 3rd in the East, one game behind Indiana. Brooklyn is looming, 2.5 games back. The Nets have a rigorous 8-game road trip on the horizon, and don’t play the Knicks again. I’ll be shocked if the Knicks hold onto the 3rd seed by season’s end.
The Nuggets, who clearly got the better of the Carmelo trade two years ago, are 44-22, and have won 10 straight.

i like that but “overcome knee injury” seems strong.

Wow, I had not seen this. Typical Melo.
Although I’m getting pretty tired of all the “player returns to place and gets booed” events these days. NBA fans are some selfish, needy bitches.

Considering how he acted up to when he was traded, I think they fans get one game of booing.
March 14th, 2013 at 10:01 AM
Carmelo needs to hear the Mike Singletary “can’t win with them” speech he gave Vernon Davis.
March 14th, 2013 at 10:15 AM
Maybe. Seemed a little sensationalized. I always give athletes credit when it comes to injuries. Those guys hate playing bad/losing so much they’re not going to come up with a reason to pull themselves out of the game unless it’s pretty legit.

If they pay for the tickets, buy the gear and then a player bitches out and doesnt honor his guaranteed contract, a little booing is not the end of the world. Going outside of good taste and social responsibiltiy (like the death threats to family or something) is unacceptable if it happens.

I think this is overstated a little. Certainly the Nuggets are playing well, but it’s not like their ceiling is any higher than it was when Melo was there. They’re not getting out of the 2nd round.

2nd round is further than they were used to with Melo.
He got those fans valuable players in return. They should be cheering his dumb ass now that he’s gone.
March 14th, 2013 at 10:23 AM
Reminds me of Jay Cutler and RGIII.
Take yourself out of game, everybody calls you a punk bitch.
Stay in the game, play like shit and get injured, people call you stupid.
After your career’s over and you are suffering from debilitating injuries people tell you that you knew the risks.
At least they’re getting paid.

Maybe a little Devil’s Advocate, but Melo hurt his knee in the first place when he asked out and Woodson left him in so he probably didn’t want to leave it in the coach’s hands this time.
March 14th, 2013 at 10:27 AM
Carmelo told the Nuggets for two years that he was going to go somewhere else if they didn’t improve the team around him. This allowed them to trade him and now they’re arguably better anyways. Why would Denver fans be mad at him? He was the only reason they were relevant in the first place.
March 14th, 2013 at 10:38 AM
I call the Nuggets, the “Nugglets”. I also call ketchup packets, “ketchup packlets”. Why? I just think it sounds funny.
March 14th, 2013 at 10:39 AM
He was gone either way.
March 14th, 2013 at 10:41 AM
he’s a nice contrast to that try-hard fool kobe bryant
March 14th, 2013 at 10:43 AM
He probably went to the locker room because he was disappointed that some crazy bitch sitting courtside did not walk out onto the court during the game and cry out Melo! … Melo! …
March 14th, 2013 at 10:44 AM
*stares blankly*
March 14th, 2013 at 10:54 AM
Those Nuggets unis are fugly.
March 14th, 2013 at 10:56 AM
I got a good chuckle when the fans in the fourth quarter were chanting “Where is Melo?”. Knicks won’t get out of the 1st round of the playoffs at the rate their going.
March 14th, 2013 at 11:00 AM
He bailed out on his team followed by this “Early prognosis is that Anthony is heading back to New York to have his knee drained” is hackery at it’s finest. He shouldn’t be playing at this point unless the knee is drained. He looked a little more fluid, early on, than he did in the Golden State game, but he is injured nonetheless. This is all connected to the Christmas Day fall against the Lakers.

Oh the “KNICKS GOT FLEECED HOW COULD THET GIVE UP MOSGOV!?!” idiot rhetoric is back
March 14th, 2013 at 11:58 AM
How did the Nuggets get the better end of the trade? Both teams did fine.
The Nuggets were able to easily remain a contender by losing a malcontent, and the Knicks guaranteed themselves a first round playoff exit, which is much better than anything they had before.

Agreed. Hard to say anyone won or lost that trade. Things may look different, but in the end, neither team is any closer to winning a championship.
March 14th, 2013 at 12:15 PM
I will say though, the narrative is being laid pretty well in advance for an early playoff exit in NYC.
Doubt that the Knicks fall below Brooklyn, but the potential of a 4/5 matchup vs. Boston is really interesting.
March 14th, 2013 at 1:27 PM
As long as the Knicks stay within the 2-3 range, there isn’t a team below them that is knocking them out in the first round.
