The Miami Dolphins Won The Elusive “First Day of NFL Free Agency” Crown
The other teams outside of New England may not have many divisional titles over the last decade, but at least they take turns being offseason champions. Last year, it was Buffalo signing Mario Williams. The Jets have won multiple offseason titles with Rex Ryan. Tuesday, it was Miami creating buzz by winning in free agency.
The Dolphins signed Mike Wallace, a big move for a team needing to provide weapons for Ryan Tannehill. Wallace got a deal (subject to all the caveats that they never work out this way) that would average $12 million, with $27 million guaranteed. For some perspective on how much Miami really won, that is behind only Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, and Larry Fitzgerald. By average salary, Wallace is now third in the league at the wide receiver position. Mr. Right or Mr. Right Now? For salary purposes, Wallace was definitely Mr. Right Now, as he, Dwayne Bowe, and Percy Harvin are the latest to cash in on free agency in the post-rookie wage scale world.
So I guess it depends on how much you view getting a wide receiver in more the 15 to 25 range for top 5 money as a win (and it may be only top 15 money three years into the deal to be fair). The Dolphins also got younger at linebacker, signing both Dannell Ellerbe away from the Baltimore Ravens and Philip Wheeler from Oakland. They released Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett in response to those moves, as cap saving measures. We’ll see if younger equals better, because those two players could be emerging, but also don’t have the history of consistent play.
Jake Long is still out there, checking out his options. Reggie Bush just signed with Detroit. On the other hand, the Dolphins will likely add a tight end to replace Anthony Fasano, with Brandon Myers and Dustin Keller both options. The Wallace move was the big splash of day one, and it would appear to address a critical issue when it comes to aiding Ryan Tannehill’s development. With Wallace providing a speed threat, moving Brian Hartline to more of a second receiver role, the expectations should be that Tannehill makes the big second year jump that so many successful quarterbacks have had.

The first thing were gonna do is acknowledge that this guy is awesome. He shoots Theo Tonin, fakes his own death in a spectacular fashion, pushes a guy out of an airplane WHILE HE’S FLYING IT, parachutes into Harlan county with enough coke and cash to jump start the economy of a small country, and then he has the balls to get a job in law enforcement not once, but TWO TIMES… he spends a couple days riding around with you while you’re looking for him, and now he’s run off with a hooker that’s half his age. That’s some badass shit.
Damn straight, Art.
For salary purposes, Wallace was definitely Mr. Right Now, as he, Dwayne Bowe, and Percy Harvin are the latest to cash in on free agency in the post-rookie wage scale world.
Two of those three teams will be unhappy.
March 13th, 2013 at 1:56 PM
Care to give your thoughts on Jermon Bushrod, Jason? Seeing from news sources that it’s a good deal for Chicago. From folks that seem to dig a bit deeper and do analysis, they believe the Bears got hoodwinked and only marginally improved their pass protection.
March 13th, 2013 at 1:56 PM
BUUUUURN
March 13th, 2013 at 1:58 PM
Will anyone block for him?
March 13th, 2013 at 1:58 PM
Jared Allen is very happy about that signing
March 13th, 2013 at 1:59 PM
The Jets have to be reeling after winning three straight World Offseason Championships, and then barely making any noise so far this year.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:00 PM
Atlanta re-signed William Moore, Sam Baker and Tony G. Grimes is up in the air, but it looks like they won’t sign Steven Jackson, so I am pretty happy. Now they have to draft a DE (or two) with their first three picks and hope they hit on him.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:01 PM
They did sign David Garrard
March 13th, 2013 at 2:01 PM
Guy in a small village in my area went on a rampage today. 4 killed, 2 injured, police still hunting him down.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:03 PM
I think Wallace could have a 2012 Vincent Jackson type season after signing his contract. Tannehill was pretty good on deep passes with Hartline as a deep threat, so having an approaching his prime speedster like Wallace could yield some great results.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:04 PM
Did you ever get a haircut at that place, AP?
March 13th, 2013 at 2:04 PM
Nope. It’s a few towns over in next county. Crazy story today.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:05 PM
I sense the Wallace getting 1150 yards and 9 TDs, 85% of which will be in garbage time of them being routed.
Analysis: early 4th round fantasy pick
March 13th, 2013 at 2:06 PM
Again, who will block for Miami? Seems to me paying Wallace $27 million guaranteed was a bit much. Giving Ellerbe that much coin was also crazy, but I do get that bad teams have to overpay. Just the nature of free agency.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:06 PM
They will trade Revis and then wait for the bargins after the smoke clears.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:07 PM
Good god that 1st game between Prov. and Cinci was awful. No way Cinci makes it out of the 1st round.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:07 PM
white smoke in vatican. pope selected
March 13th, 2013 at 2:08 PM
I laughed at this because it’s so true. Dude will do nothing in 6 games and explode in 6 games leaving the remaining 4 games to be average. Yet fantasy players will go apeshit for him.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:08 PM
deeser, i really hope Syracuse pounds Seton Hall. Syracuse needs a win badly
March 13th, 2013 at 2:09 PM
Whoa. When will he be announced?
March 13th, 2013 at 2:09 PM
probably within an hour.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:11 PM
maybe 2.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:11 PM
Nice. As someone who thinks the Catholic Church is generally terrible I obviously don’t care who they choose. It would be interesting to see the Ghana dude elected though. There are so many Catholics in Africa that it would be a big thing for that continent I would think. I assume an old white guy will get the nod, though.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:12 PM
It would be awesome to see the racist Catholics in France and Spain go nuts over a black pope.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:12 PM
Has anybody done a tour of the Vatican City? My sisters and I were considering getting a trip for parents there for their 50th anniversary. How many days would suffice?
March 13th, 2013 at 2:13 PM
I wouldn’t be surprised to see a pope in his early 60s which is young for a pope
March 13th, 2013 at 2:13 PM
A.P. I have no clue who I want to win. Cinci is just awful to watch and everyone else UConn won’t be seeing anymore. One thing I do know is that I hope Cuse downs early this week and next.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:14 PM
Sounds awesome. I would love to see Rome and all of the stuff over there.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:15 PM
Incidentally, each time was when they signed Revis.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:17 PM
I wouldn’t be surprised to see a pope in his early 60s with a young boy.
Fixed
March 13th, 2013 at 2:17 PM
As a Dolphin fan, I honestly don’t trust Jeff Ireland to get my to-go order right at a taco bell. I wish I could be happy, but I just don’t trust the bastard.
/not as bad as Jeffrey Loria and David Samson
//wish they were all like Riley and Arison
March 13th, 2013 at 2:18 PM
There is a saying of “replace a fat pope with a skinny pope” – meaning to shift a line of thought with each successor. But with Benedict stepping down, this is an unusual circumstance. He had a terrible time being able to initiate the change he wanted due to the obstructive conservatism by his supporting coucil. Perhaps this is the prevailing discussion of the cardinals, who can orchestrate the change and get the politicial base to do so. Very difficult task.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:18 PM
So the Cardinals cut 1 injury prone RB and replaced him with an equally injury prone RB.
Cardinals will be in the driver’s seat for Clowney next spring and hopefully they’ll trade the pick for a king’s ransom.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:19 PM
Who did they sign? Jackson?
March 13th, 2013 at 2:19 PM
Good to see myopic and blatant Catholic bashing is perceived as cool here once again.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:20 PM
I miss the days of Dolphins songs on the LeBatard show. Those were hilarious
March 13th, 2013 at 2:21 PM
No way Cinci makes it out of the 1st round.
I was really hoping Providence would win that game
March 13th, 2013 at 2:21 PM

March 13th, 2013 at 2:21 PM

March 13th, 2013 at 2:21 PM
Mendenhall. I would have preferred Jackson even with him being older.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:22 PM
Where is Washington so far? They are the classic offseason champs.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:23 PM
I think Jackson is waiting out Green Bay’s lowball offer in hopes somebody makes him something so good he cant refuse.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:23 PM
I did the tour and have never been more disgusted or sickened by the opulence and wealth of the Catholic Church juxtaposed to the poor starving people on the streets. I also found it hilarious that they were peddling everything from Rosary Beads to vials of the Pope’s nut-sweat right inside the church. Reminded me of that part in the bible were Jesus went bat-shit cause they were selling stuff in front of the church. But what do they care what Jesus wanted anyway amirite?
If you can overlook the hypocracy, it’s a cool enough experience.

March 13th, 2013 at 2:24 PM
I know, right? It’s not like they covered up child rape for years and years and years.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:24 PM
Depends on how religious they are. I thought a day or two was enought for VC itself. But several more for the rest of Rome, which I enjoyed a lot more. Although when I was inside the Sistine Chapel some psycho eastern european broad kept trying to casually take pictures, and after telling her to cut the shit for the third time they finally they tried to escort her out and she took a swing at one of the security guards. Good times.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:27 PM
But orly is right. Dolphins management is not the dumpster fire that is Marlins management

how can the dowfeen be winners when they bring in wallace but lose jake long, reggie bush and anthony fasano? interesting.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:28 PM
11 games with more than 60 yards receiving.
6 games with 90 or more.
9 games with a TD or more
7 games with 6 or more receptions (another five games with 5 catches)
4 games under 50 yards receiving

The Miami Dolphins Won The Elusive “First Day of NFL Free Agency” Crown
Is the first day of free agency really that elusive? I mean, it happens every year, no?
March 13th, 2013 at 2:29 PM
The jackass covering the Pope election just pulled 4 Americans and asked who they wanted and if it was an American. All aren’t Catholic and one stated the best one, “I wouldn’t mind seeing someone from Africa elected.”
March 13th, 2013 at 2:29 PM
So was I, obviously. It was ugly.
Love the way Cincy plays D. Might be a top 10 kenpom defense when all is said and done.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:30 PM
but lose jake long,
i’ve seen a few reports of people saying he’s not as good/declining. i’d love to hear your thoughts.

It would be refreshing to see defense of catholicism. What would that look like?
March 13th, 2013 at 2:34 PM
I haven’t been paying attention, but I’m assuming CNN is pissed this happened so quick. That live video shot of a freaking chimney I’m sure they had on 8 hours every day probably gave them a ratings bump.

I can attest to that jones variability…had him each of the past two yrs. Had to fight with white and tony for passes
March 13th, 2013 at 2:39 PM
THis is why I love ATLs offense. They’re a bit like UGA in that regard. Tons of options and they spread it around. Not reliant on one dude.

March 13th, 2013 at 2:42 PM
I know, right? It’s not like they covered up child rape for years and years and years.
All I am saying the membership of the church does tremendous work locally in charity work. I would never say the Catholic churh is perfect, but I am sensical to seperate the sin of men from a call to have a personal relationship with God (should you choose to believe in God).
For all the bullshit high-minded pretense people fake to possess here, theres a neanderthal approach to broad-brush mocking religion, often because certain individuals cling to small vendettas to mock a topic they are probably too superficial to investigate. I just think mocking a person’s religion is incredibly small.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:42 PM
James Southerland should not be starting. He can’t do shit other than shoot threes. Fuck him.

Never been so excited for NFL free agency. Thank God for the salary floor.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:44 PM
I’m not mocking your religion. I’m mocking The Catholic Church. The actual governing body.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:44 PM
You’d think syracuse would have learned to penetrate the zone since that’s the defense they play. But noooooo..every time they’ve seen it this season, they’ve shit themselves.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:45 PM
2012 it was 4 and 4 for each. I didn’t check his rookie stats, since I know he missed games because injuries. But if you want to do the leg work, I am all ears.
Larry Fitzgerald?
March 13th, 2013 at 2:45 PM
but I am sensical to seperate the sin of men from a call to have a personal relationship with God
In my experience, as a whole, Catholics have by far the least personal relationship with God out of any religious people I’ve met.
I just think mocking a person’s religion is incredibly small.
It’s bigger than mocking forehead size.
March 13th, 2013 at 2:46 PM

Hey southerland, nice of you to start hitting shots that you didn’t hit the past 3 weeks. dickface
March 13th, 2013 at 2:47 PM
But he also had 5 more games with 50 yards or more (3 with 70+). Hardly feast or famine. More like Feast, eat sensibly and then famine 4 games a year when Roddy goes ham.

March 13th, 2013 at 3:04 PM
What are the actual schools that would be potential for that league:
Dayton, X, Creighton, Depaul, St. Louis, Butler? Any other midwestern ones? Two divisions?
March 13th, 2013 at 3:05 PM
Jake Long finished the season the last 2 years on IR. I believe his play has declined somewhat and he’s going to demand top $$$$. Phins fans and media have always gon back and forth on this pick as opposed to the Matt Ryan pick by ATL. While a big, hefty LT is nice to have, he usually doesn’t end up winning games for you in the end.
Parcells was still in power then and this his baby. I like Jake Long, but he would have not been my 1st pick in the draft. I still cringe at Parcells fingerprints on this team.
Let’s not forget the great Pat White pickup of 2009. FOCK.
March 13th, 2013 at 3:07 PM
Geez, that was a thud. Cuse offense just throws it up.

The whole idea of not being able to marry is flimsy. Keeping Priests from marrying keeps all assets and properties within the church.
That’s exactly why the rule exists. The ‘vow of chastity’ bit is just window dressing.
March 13th, 2013 at 3:58 PM
This guy took second when Benedict won. He musta stepped up his game
March 13th, 2013 at 4:02 PM
Keeping Priests from marrying keeps all assets and properties within the church.
Is that cause or effect? All priests from orders (a percentage not all priests) take vows of poverty. Many items locally are gifted to parishes. I moved many priests, nuns and semniarians as some were assigned to new housing, parishes, or retirement faciltiies. Most of their possessions were inherited (i.e. they were only child, kept some keepsakes from their parents). Most have a few items from travel, a few things about their family and about 1-2 suitcases of clothes.
I think many people are open to women priests. To say things have not changed for women within the Church would not be accurate either.
March 13th, 2013 at 4:03 PM
So far, and this is a very early assessment, he sort of sounds like a Benedict clone. Older (76…Benedict was 78 at election), against contraceptives, and wary of homosexuality.

Scripty, it’s not so much the reason these days as priests don’t have much in the way of personal property. But in the days of the early church, after Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, priests rose in prominence and often became wealthy as a result of their position. They were also often better educated than most everyone else, especially after the fall of the western Roman Empire.

Don’t know about that. The church I attended growing up recently reverted to the old-school thinking that females cannot serve as altar girls/assistants during Mass anymore.

Sensible basis for commenting on a faith

Also, the priests at my church growing up not only got a nice big house to live in for free, they got a new car every year from the parishioners.

That’s largely the decision of the pastor and/or the diocese as a whole. So the leadership has probably changed since they originally made that decision. Benedict, when he was pope, reintroduced some older, pre-Vatican II aspects of the Mass. It doesn’t surprise me at all that some churches have gone back on allowing roles for girls because of it.

Oh yeah so poor, vatican just invested $23 million in property including Europe’s largest gay spa.

As someone pointed out earlier, it’s not criticism of a faith — it’s a criticism of a church power structure steeped in secrecy, bigotry, sexism and lust for accumulating wealth.

absolutely ms, and women on the side. and the priests and pastors of today face much tougher tasks than ever. a very difficult task. It’s amazing for those that hear & feel that vocation.

Why did the Catholic church make adolescent me feel bad about jerking off? Catholic guilt is the worst. Religion is good for instilling some type of morality in a person, but delusional on nearly everything else.

Agreed. Being a priest isn’t easy, especially today. I have much respect for those that devote their lives to such a calling*.

I’m no religious scholar [cue dramatic music], but from what I’ve read in the past it is based on a misunderstanding of the story of Onan. Many modern scholars say that the story of Onan (from which the word onanism, referring to masturbation, comes…excuse the pun) refers to God’s punishment for disobedience of his will and not based on the action of jerking off in the desert.

you seem completely detached from the operative local ministry. In my area alone, something like 10-15 head start centers, 4 million meals provided, 10k nights of shelter, 5k people supported off dependency, etc. Completely local budget.

giving people a place to gather and celebrate, yes. Everything else, you gotta take with a grain of salt. completely agree.

Agreed, but you seem detached from the fact those things can be accomplished without monetarily contributing to world`s largest child rape victim hush money fund.

You have a point there. I detached myself from the church immediately after my confirmation and have never regretted that decision.
The breaking point, and perhaps my lasting memory of the religious orthodoxy forced down my throat from birth, was when I dared to ask a question during confirmation instruction, prompting a red-faced priest to yell at me, “Shut up! You are not here to ask questions!”

The Catholic Church has done a lot of fucked up things–religion, in fact, is response for a lot of fucked up things–but let’s not forget that St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan, a Catholic hospital near Greenwich Village, was on the front lines of the AIDS epidemic as it exploded in New York City in the 80s. Gay men were treated without judgment, without condescension and without any charge. You can have principles but knowing when to set them aside for humanitarian reasons is important as well.

Problem is, people take it literally. I used to pray every night when I was younger, but now I only attend mass once a year(Christmas Eve), just to make my Mom happy. It feels like a cult to me when I am there. Too much death/destruction in the name of “god” has occurred in the history of man.

Yeah, the free market is going to make it happen. Lotta profits to be had in those programs.

And if coitus interruptus is really what’s bad, and not masturbation, well the wife and I have some splain’in to do then.
