By the way, this 3-foot provision only applies laterally. You are allowed to go as far backward as you want. So, when the kid starts the play way back from the end line that’s not an issue either. He could have gone to the wall.

Sorry – late to the party. There are no dribbling or pivot foot restrictions on a throw in. If it is a spot throw in, you must simply keep one foot within an imaginary 3 foot wide area at the spot of the throw in, and they legally throw the ball directly into play (i.e., you can’t throw in the hoop, off the back of the backboard, etc.).

As someone noted above, it’s only an issue if the dribble was beyond the sideline into the court of play.

I think the rules guide the official to not call an offense unless a clear advantage is gained. While HS basketball may differ from little league in a talent level, this is how a 4th grader can travel when bringing the ball up the court when unguarded and a ref lets it go. The ref isn’t choosing to have a good spirit about things, it is inconsequential.

And, I really think it’s okay to dribble unless you bounce the ball on the line or are trying to deceive somehow. This is one of those things I think people have gotten in there heads. If somebody could show a link where it is illegal I’d be suprised.
