Michigan High School Runs Carbon Copy of the Duke Grant Hill-Christian Laettner Play and Incredibly, It Works
Trailing by two points with 1.5 seconds left in a Regional Semifinal, Hudsonville High School (Michigan) decided to draw up the ol’ Grant Hill-to-Christian Laettner play in attempt to send the game to overtime. (Disregard the score in the video; it wasn’t tied.)
Brent Hibbitts played the role of Grant Hill, throwing a looping 75-foot pass that was virtually on-point to Cody Stuive, who was Christian Laettner. Stuive initially dropped the pass, but quickly recovered it to toss in a lefty hook as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.
Hudsonville prevailed, 64-60, and will play for the Regional title tonight. [via Fox 17]

should not have counted. the inbounds passer bounced the ball once (out of bounds) before passing it. that’s a violation.

Nice shot. Lucky the pass got through the defense.
I guess that proves that if Pitino has guarded the inbounder on the base line, they might have still lost.
/doesn’t prove anything

I didn’t think you could dribble the ball when throwing it in.

I’m confused.. the score shows tied before the pass and they certainly act like they just won the game.

I think it’s okay if it is either a live ball (like after a basket) or it wasnt really used for an advantage or deception. (cant see the video). Cant dribble or step on the line, obviously.

All it needs is a janitor playing the role of Thomas Hill (who potentially would be Thomas Hill).

According to my exhaustive research, you can dribble the ball. Couldn’t find Michigan HS rules, but according to a few links you can.

Did he gain an advantage by dribbling, that is the foremost thing to ask when calling a violation in basketball. I think the rules guide the official to not call an offense unless a clear advantage is gained. While HS basketball may differ from little league in a talent level, this is how a 4th grader can travel when bringing the ball up the court when unguarded and a ref lets it go. The ref isn’t choosing to have a good spirit about things, it is inconsequential.
And, I really think it’s okay to dribble unless you bounce the ball on the line or are trying to deceive somehow. This is one of those things I think people have gotten in there heads. If somebody could show a link where it is illegal I’d be suprised.
/not a ref

Sorry – late to the party. There are no dribbling or pivot foot restrictions on a throw in. If it is a spot throw in, you must simply keep one foot within an imaginary 3 foot wide area at the spot of the throw in, and they legally throw the ball directly into play (i.e., you can’t throw in the hoop, off the back of the backboard, etc.).
As someone noted above, it’s only an issue if the dribble was beyond the sideline into the court of play.
March 13th, 2013 at 11:30 AM
By the way, this 3-foot provision only applies laterally. You are allowed to go as far backward as you want. So, when the kid starts the play way back from the end line that’s not an issue either. He could have gone to the wall.

Coached in a few games where the opponent was doing just that (moving around w/in a 3-ft area) and I had to apologize to the ref for my idiot fans that were screaming “TRAVEL!” at him
