USC Basketball Coaching Search: Early Signs Point to Pitt’s Jamie Dixon
USC fired basketball coach Kevin O’Neill back in January, and early speculation about who might take the job centered around the usual suspects: former Arizona assistant Josh Pastner (successful in Memphis), St. Mary’s coach Randy Bennett (forget that given the recent NCAA situation), and Pitt’s Jamie Dixon (from LA, and a West Coast guy).
At this juncture, I’m hearing Dixon is the primary target of the search firm advising USC AD Pat Haden on the hire. Although it hasn’t been confirmed anywhere (I tried the USC athletic department, no dice), Korn/Ferry is supposedly working with Haden on the hire, and leading the charge is Jed Hughes.
If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Hughes recently did the Jets’ GM search, and he’s a former NFL assistant coach for, among other teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hughes lives in Pittsburgh, and apparently knows Dixon well. The word on the street is that Dixon wants to get back to the West Coast, and even Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News speculated that there’s some trepidation on Dixon’s part about joining the loaded ACC next year. Recruiting could be the issue because the city of Pittsburgh doesn’t churn out much hoops talent.
Pitt has been able to visit New York, D.C., Philadelphia and New Jersey and entice recruits—most of them not at the top of prep rankings, but nearly all possessing the toughness and team-first character Dixon values—to play in a league they have known all their lives.
Take away the lure of the Big East, and those recruits might view Pitt as a less-appealing destination. The Big East not only provides the opportunity for a Philly kid to return home periodically for a game against Villanova, or to the region to play Seton Hall or Rutgers or even St. John’s, it also provides the thrill of ending the conference season at Madison Square Garden in the Big East Tournament.
Really think there are dozens of kids from Jersey who’ll be excited about playing road games in Winston-Salem, N.C., and Tallahassee, Fla.?
Dixon would be a home run for USC, obviously, but then what would Pittsburgh do?

Tony Gonzalez isn’t retiring.

Jaime Dixon sucks. Why don’t they go after Shaka Smart?
March 12th, 2013 at 1:29 PM
i saw eustachy’s name connected to this
March 12th, 2013 at 1:29 PM
Why don’t they go after Shaka Smart?
My guess? The name scares them.

Why would a high profile coach go to that basketball wasteland?
/anyone ever figure out which rock SCTrojans is hiding under?

he’s come back as tncowboy7

Dan Monson.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:32 PM
USC is a dumpster fire.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:33 PM
He has done a pretty good job in a basketball wasteland for the last 10 years. I can’t stress enough how much the city of Pittsburgh hates basketball.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:33 PM
he’s come back as tncowboy7
What was his deal awhile back? When he was SCTrojan.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:34 PM
Why are we supposed to care?
They are less relevant than Duke football.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:35 PM
I’m guessing Shaka is waiting for a blue blood job to open.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:35 PM

first of all, i was joking. second, i don’t know about his deal. my profile of him was: gambler, hoops and golf junkie, got under lots of folks’ internet skin, but not exactly sure why
March 12th, 2013 at 1:36 PM
Is USC basketball even a lateral move from Pitt?
I didn’t click the links…what’s Dixon making at Pitt?

I’m guessing Shaka is waiting for a blue blood job to open.
no way man, he turned down illinois last year
/waits for yet another person to take me seriously today

File this under: “You never know, might as well ask.” Can’t imagine USC being all that forthcoming to a blogger, but it was worth a shot I suppose.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:38 PM
what’s Dixon making at Pitt?
this is one of those deals where money might really not be the main thing. let’s see: living in socal or pittsburgh?
/bring it toboggan and mole

I wouldn’t worry about that too much.

see, ms?
March 12th, 2013 at 1:41 PM
Would be a homerun hire. Obviously people don’t like his playing time, but I’d be shocked if he isn’t successful. The guys works harder then anyone in coaching.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:42 PM
My reaction.

It seems like TN came on about the same time SC left. He never bothered me any, but there was something he posted that pissed people off.
I wouldn’t worry about that too much.

Early signs also point to Mike Hopkins, SU top assistant, and SoCal native
March 12th, 2013 at 1:46 PM
why would Dixon jump ship? Pitt is perfectly happy with regular season wins and early tourney losses.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:46 PM
Holy shit talk about a step backward for Dixon, then.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:47 PM

Considering he played professionally in New Zealand, and turned down Oregon allegedly last year, I would imagine location isn’t his biggest concern.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:50 PM
This is an odd comment since it doesn’t jive with your repetitive fucking bitching about only a handful of teams getting talked about on ESPN

March 12th, 2013 at 1:53 PM
If Dixon does want to leave he should wait a year. He’s about to get a shitload more national exposure in the ACC and there is no way USC is the best open job he could find. Other than “being a west coast guy” it makes zero sense whatsoever.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:55 PM
Well that wasn’t a slam on Oregon, that was more of a “if he wants out of Pittsburgh he had a chance” thing.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:55 PM

yawn. get back to me when the statue of liberty is found half buried in the red sand

What do I know about USC basketball? OJ Mayo.
That’s it.
March 12th, 2013 at 2:00 PM
Disagree. He’s fallen flat in the tourney but he can coach.

The pride of Huntington, West By God, upholding the Randy Moss tradition of the state’s Mr. Basketball:
In January 2007, Mayo allegedly assaulted referee Mike Lazo after being ejected from a Huntington High game vs. Capital High School …
On March 9, 2007, Mayo and three other men were cited by the Cabell County Sheriff’s Dept. for misdemeanor simple possession of marijuana.

Take Pittsburgh’s hatred of basketball and multiply it by 1000 and you get Buffalo’s hatred of basketball.
March 12th, 2013 at 2:09 PM
Is the ACC really going to give him that much more national exposure than the Big East?
Dixon knows that in the ACC they don’t allow NEARLY as much contact as his teams like to play with. He’d really have to adjust his recruiting philosophy.
March 12th, 2013 at 2:09 PM
Dixon looks very Gavin Newsom-ish in that photo, and for that reason alone I cannot support him in any endeavor.

There are countless others. Getting to the Final Four/winning title has become the “now elite QB” equivalent.

March 12th, 2013 at 2:19 PM
well what is the standard of greatness, cleet?
we have to point at results as some point. izzo is 17 years, one NC, six FFs. generally regarded as in the top five-10 of today’s coaches. but brad stevens has been to more NC games in a lot less time. so he’s missing longevity but also doesn;t have B10 cache
there are a lot of coaches who are good coaches but not great recruiters, so they don’t get noticed for their coaching. there are great recruiters who are not good game coaches, and they usually do better
i’m just spitballing and don’t know that much about sports, so would like a good discussion
March 12th, 2013 at 2:26 PM
Except when Syracuse plays Canisius at the Sabres’ arena.
March 12th, 2013 at 2:31 PM
I think it’s interesting the differences between CBB and CFB. Izzo’s CFB equivalent would be Bob Stoops – won a title in 2000 (like Izzo), has gone back to many title games and BCS bowls since then but hasnt won since and has taken a lot of heat for it. Izzo hasnt gotten that kind of heat, partially b/c just “getting to the F4″ is enough in CBB, and also b/c MSU is not considered a blueblood on the level of Indiana, Kentucky, Duke, etc. Also Izzo’s teams often outperform their seed, although he does have 4 first round losses since his last title.
The “top coach” in CBB is fluid and depends on if you’re talking historically or recently. Historically Izzo is probably behind K, Pitino, and Roy Williams at least. You could make an argument for Calipari, Self, Boeheim, and Billy Donovan in that mix as well. Brad Stevens has a ways to go but he’s off to a great start.
March 12th, 2013 at 2:34 PM
thanks redick
March 12th, 2013 at 2:36 PM
which of those names would you separate into great coach/ok recruiter and vice versa?
i guess i’d rather be a great recruiter, bc you have a better chance with good talent, than coaching up a mediocre crew annually. half of recruiting pitch is the history of winning/chance for exposure, so at some point it is circular
March 12th, 2013 at 2:49 PM
USC is such a downgrade it’s not even funny. 10% chance that Dixon leaves. However if he would, Pitt would immediately go after Sean Miller who has called Pitt his “dream job.” That’s the answer for who Pitt would target.
Pitt has been recruiting majorly out of the DC area for years now which is prime ACC country. That only gives those kids more of a reason to come to Pitt. Pitt has never recruited well in Philly so the Nova reference is pointless. NYC is the only area that matters and that isn’t going to change it much because the Big East is dead so those kids have to go somewhere.
All of this is pointless because every year we hear this about Dixon and he just won’t acknowledge it because he is tired of it after 10 years. Unless they throw $4M a year at him, he is staying put. If they offer him slightly more money, Pitt will up his salary a bit.
March 12th, 2013 at 2:52 PM
@Redick… Boeheim can’t be in the best coaches category. He criminally underachieves every year with the talent that he gets. He is a great recruiter and has done it for a long time. That’s it. He is Jaimie Dixon plus 25 years.
March 12th, 2013 at 2:54 PM
uh cause dixon is a way better coach?
March 12th, 2013 at 2:55 PM
Because he was a full-fledged idiot.
Also, Jamie Dixon will not go to Southern Cal. This is not happening. Everything credible source I’ve heard has said the job is Mike Hopkins or Robert Pack. Pack makes sense.
March 12th, 2013 at 2:57 PM
All of those coaches have had early round exits in the tourney. Look at Duke last year. I measure a good coach by consistency. Can you consistently recruit good players, and turn that into on-court success, and are you in the conversation to reach a FF consistently. A couple of bounces one way or the other and Boheim has multiple NCs, Dixon has a FF, and Stevens only makes one NC game.
March 12th, 2013 at 2:59 PM
A couple of bounces one way or the other
and we could be ruled by pandas
March 12th, 2013 at 3:04 PM
People seriously think Brad Stevens is a great coach? Outcoached in games by Horizon league coaches. And he took over a very good roster. Sorry, good guy who ran with a great opportunity. Says the right things to the media. But great? sorry I disagree.
March 12th, 2013 at 3:04 PM
Well, this got LSU to the Final Four in 2006. It certainly wasn’t astute coaching.
March 12th, 2013 at 3:12 PM
Might be too early to say great definitively, but his star is on the rise. You point out losses in Horizon league on one hand, but he took Butler to back-to-back title games. Butler…..not some goliath team with insane talent….Butler.
March 12th, 2013 at 3:13 PM

March 13th, 2013 at 4:01 AM
Sean Miller and his wife would retrun to PITT in a Heartbeat the question is would PITT pay the salary and buyout.
Ben Howland is at UCLA and doing that well, he too would return if fired by UCLA as much talk is happeing.
Pitt has been a Top 25 Basketball Program the last 10 years and is 14th in money making, it is now a plum job.
