Matt McDonough, a Senior Wrestler at Iowa, Threw Away His Second Place Medal After Losing 125-Pound B1G Championship
Matt McDonough is a 5th year senior at Iowa. McDonough and the Iowa Hawkeyes finished in 3rd place at last weekend’s BIG Wrestling Championships. This year, McDonough a 2-time champion and 3-time All-American, lost the 125-pound championship to Illinois’ sophomore, Jesse Delgado. Later that day, Sam Louwagie, an Iowa senior covering wrestling the Daily Iowan, found McDonough’s 2nd place medal in the trash.
@SamLouwagie: This is the 2nd place 125 pound Big Ten trophy. We found it in the garbage. [PIC]
@SamLougwagie: Lots of response on McD’s medal last night. My take: It just shows his and the program’s mindset. Fed up with 2nd, not accepting it.
That is Iowa wrestling. The Hawkeyes wrestling program has won 23 national titles since 1975 – 16 of which came under the guidance of Olympic gold medalist and legendary coach Dan Gable. Iowa also owns 32 Big Ten titles, but hasn’t won either since 2010.

this is not shocking. good wrestlers are hard-asses
just had my mind blown. went to look at a story i did for a rec management magazine. it was on how to choose between natural and synthetic turf. the first pic used is one of the kibbie dome, at the University of Idaho. obscure school, and one i started my college life at

Couldn’t this be a way to get around paying kids for things. ” I didn’t play in the game so I threw my gold pants away.” $200 in cash later ” I found those gold pants in the trash,” said booster x.

He realized many of the best HS wrestlers he was recruiting were from PA and Ohio, so he went to Penn State where they’d be closer to home.

Vikings release Antoine Winfield. So, so bummed. One of my favorite Vikings ever, but it’s naive to expect another quality year out of a 36 year old corner

Lions could use him.

Winfield did not want to take a pay cut. Phil Loadholt re-signing with Vikes too.

Damn near impossible to keep veterans these days.

I said this to my boss the other day in casual conversation. My boss is from Africa. He looked at me like I had lost my mind. I didn’t explain myself, but instead turned and walked away. I think he’s still trying to figure out what I meant.

$7.25 million this year. A lot to pay for him.

I hope it’s for less than $5MM.

Cael Sanderson was coach at Iowa State, not Iowa. He went undefeated there, and was basically a God. Penn State threw an absurd amount of money at him for a wrestling coach.

Vikings are cleaning up, making sure they have plenty of space for Matt Cassell and Greg Jennings. Makes sense.

Ponder and Cassell dueling for the top QB spot has to make Minny fans suicidal.
March 12th, 2013 at 2:57 PM
Not surprised. McDonough is one tough SOB and gave up a lot of points to Delgado, who had beaten him recently. Be eager for a rematch in the NCAA, but the Penn State kid and the Mizzou wrestler are tough and could beat either of the other two on any given day. Big Ten wrestling completely rocks.

this sentence pretty much sums up why my interest in the Vikings, and the NFL in particular has gone down the toilet the past 10+ years.

youpeople what is your wrestling background? like did you wrestle or are a fan, and what state?

I’d be floored if the Vikings brought Cassell in

I’ll be floored if they don’t replace Joe Webb with someone. Hell, Tebow is a better option that Webb.
Maybe even Sanchize for that matter.
March 12th, 2013 at 3:06 PM
I’d be even more surprised if he’s back as the backup, but I’d bet Cassell still thinks he can start. Vikes want someone who knows his place on the team.

Oh, yeah.

if they get rid of Webb who will all the dipshit fans clamor over next year after Ponder throws for 96 yards in the first game?

After the Raiduhs bench Palmer for Pryor, all the former USC QBs in the NFL should start their own caucus of the NFL Players Association. They can call it the Clipboard Club.
As the newest member, Matt Barkley could fetch coffee for the others.
