Manhattan Scores Five Points in :01, Results in One of the Worst Gambling Bad Beats of All-Time
Iona’s coaches, players, fans and supporters are all celebrating a victory in the MAAC title game and a return to the NCAA Tournament this year after defeating Manhattan Monday, 60-57. Another group of Iona supporters are not.
When Iona got a dunk to go up by eight with just six seconds remaining, the celebration began. Well, except it shouldn’t have just yet. Manhattan’s Shane Richards got a three-point shot off before the buzzer, making it a 5-point game as the shot went through with :01 remaining. Iona’s players ran onto the court knowing that shot did not matter, but an official called a technical because there was still :00.1 remaining when the players rushed the floor. Two free throws later, the final margin was three points.
The gambling line for the game, of course, was Iona by four points.
Wager Minds has the ticket from one guy who had a six team parlay, with five winners, and needing only the Iona game for a nice win. But his $40 play to win $1,600 went down the drain when a referee decided that the college team celebrating with 0.1 left was too soon. Bad Beat Hall of Fame right there.

shouldn’t the game be called with :00.1 remaining? i believe the rules state that it is not possible to even get a shot off with :00.3 or less remaining.

damn, right up there with a steward’s ruling at the track
my worst was when eustachy at Iowa State got hit with a late double T and the opponent made all 4FTs to cover. may have been a tourney game

Few things worse than listening to gamblers complain about bad beats.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:25 PM
The amount of rage I would have if that was me…
March 12th, 2013 at 12:27 PM
A full disclosure, I’ve been the dude explaining the bad beat before and I know no one gave a fuck.

Please include improbable fantasy football losses in these thrilling posts about your bad gambling beats.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:28 PM
Well that was a makeup for a bullshit technical on the Manhattan coach being out of the coaches box.
I had Manhattan 2nd half which was a loser anyway.

I know no one gave a fuck.
you can delete approx half the comments here daily if we worried about that standard

I’m gonna guess that when you have four kids, giving them isn’t the problem… finding a willing recipient is the issue.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:31 PM
What do you think about this fantasy football trade?

You walked right into that one vez.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:31 PM
Oh I love these stories. They are pretty close to how good your fantasy team is doing now that you got that one dude off the waiver wire.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:31 PM
oh wow. I guess everyone already thought of that joke.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:33 PM
Before I answer, let me tell you about the weather here.

I think the story is interesting. Don’t care that the dude lost out on money. That’s why it is called gambling.

to be fully transparent…it’s a very efficient four. one is my stepson, and two of the other three are twins. so i only had to have sex twice

It’s like the week before National Signing Day has been forgotten already
Stories like this post are fun to me, same as when Harbaugh declined that safety in the 49er-Seahawk game moving millions from one side to the other
March 12th, 2013 at 12:35 PM
Hold up, how does my team look?
March 12th, 2013 at 12:37 PM
That was a good one. I like the story from the sport perspective… a nuance that changes a point spread. I just don’t give a shit about individual gamblers.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:37 PM
If you’re putting huge money on Iona/Manhattan, you have serious problems
March 12th, 2013 at 12:38 PM
nothing i hate talking about more than the weather.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:39 PM
Every year I see betting lines next to preseason NFL games I just hope some poor bastard’s college fund isn’t being laid on the likes of Graham Harrell leading a late TD drive

I bet she was relieved.

If you’re putting huge money on Iona/Manhattan, you have serious problems
it’s the kind of game that pro gamblers likely hammer….less public influence, so scouting/research pays off
March 12th, 2013 at 12:40 PM
nothing i hate talking about more than the weather.
Someone just called my office and asked me how my Spring Break as going. I wanted to reach into the phone and smash his teeth out.
I hate people who try to get to creative or cute in small talk.

Usually yes, but often lower tier conference games present lines with good value.
/bet Mid American Conference games for a long time

Now this – this is a problem

i go out of my way to not engage people i barely know. small talk is 1a and laughing at things that aren’t remotely funny is 1b

And this would be one of the things that tops the list.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:43 PM
well, except you guys
March 12th, 2013 at 12:43 PM
Not one of my bad beats- I’ve never wagered on NFL- but a friend of mine had this one in 1997. Took Steelers +3 at Jax. Steelers lining up for game winning FG down 23-21. A make is an outright win; a miss is still a cover…except for
March 12th, 2013 at 12:43 PM
Hmmm… I wonder if big, winning professional gamblers make their hay on games like this, or on the more marquee matchups?
On the one hand, you might think the smaller games would be more likely to have an exploitable point spread, but you would also think that bigger bets would move the line more quickly on the mid-major type stuff.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:44 PM
snakeman, that reminds me of the nice squares payoff i lost when harrison returned that INT just before halftime. i’ve seen others here complain about that one too
March 12th, 2013 at 12:44 PM
My (bachelor) friend in Denver will call me in July to see how my summer is going. Umm…it’s like every other fucking season except it’s hot as balls.

crazy talk

Still need some mathemagician to calculate the odds of Cincy covering 9 in the Belk Bowl when Duke had 1st and goal inside of two minutes in a tied game…that was the miracles of miracles
March 12th, 2013 at 12:45 PM
There’s a bit of perverse fun in there, that’s what CentSports is for. Being able to bet pennies on McLeod Bethel-Thompson carrying over 21.5 in the 2nd half is hilarious.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:48 PM
if jackson doesn;t return that buzzer-beater punt vs. the gints my centsport account might be up to 1 meeelion dollars by now
March 12th, 2013 at 12:50 PM
Bunch of Larry David’s in this bitch
March 12th, 2013 at 12:50 PM
But does that incentivize you to watch the game? Will you still watch a preseason game in full to see those cents paid out? The reason I’ve never gambled on sports outside of being in Vegas is I can generally watch a game/match/etc.. and after a few minutes pick a team I’d like to see win. I don’t need the action to stay interested for the most part.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:50 PM
Really? I am sorry to hear that. #pullout #condom #thepill
+1
Couldn’t agree more.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:54 PM
Based on the outcome, odds are 100%. It’s science. You’re welcome.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:54 PM
I’m watching anyway, if it’s a Vikings preseason game. Until the bitter end.
March 12th, 2013 at 12:55 PM
Hey man that’s my sex life you’re joking about
March 12th, 2013 at 12:59 PM
no sympathy for gamblers losing
March 12th, 2013 at 1:00 PM
So, God now hates golfers in addition to florida.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:02 PM
Or maybe you just go to Iona
March 12th, 2013 at 1:02 PM
Throwing $40 on a series of MAAC and MAC games? Yeah, I HOPE you lose brah.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:02 PM
Good luck to the golfers playing in Florida… sheesh.
March 12th, 2013 at 1:06 PM

There are a # of sharps who do this. An issue is putting $$$ on these games can be alerting them to a bad spread, so some of the guys in Vegas half to spread the bets out at various casinos at the same time to really make the most on a hacked line for low tier ncaa hoops. It is not like you go in and are able to just plop $5k down on Prarie View-Grambling.

Ap you’re smoking me 10-0
Tony Gonzalez returning
March 12th, 2013 at 1:08 PM
Well there were only 2 games last night. It should even out tonight
March 12th, 2013 at 1:23 PM
i know ap but thanks for taking me seriously
