March Madness 2013: Liberty Flames are in the NCAA Tournament

Famous Alums/Attendees: LU was founded by Jerry Fallwell in 1971. Famous Alumni include ESPN’s Samantha Ponder and former Atlanta Brave Sid Bream.

Random Fun Fact: When including the number of people taking online courses (over 80,000), LU is the largest private non-profit university and the largest university in Virginia. LU is slated to be just the second team in NCAA history to reach the tournament with 20 losses (2008 Coppin St).
Tournament History/Most Recent: This will be the Flames third appearance in the NCAA tournament. They last appeared in 2004, losing to St. Joseph’s in the first round.
Record vs. Projected At-Larges and Bubble Teams: 0-2 (68-59 @Georgetown, 74-56 vs. Southern Miss)
Good Wins/Bad Losses: This team didn’t even win their second Division 1 game until January 12th. However, they won their last game of the regular season and reeled off 4 straight wins to capture the Big South title.
Notable Player(s): Junior John Caleb Sanders leads the Flames in Scoring (13.8 ppg) and Assists (3.5 apg).
All-Important Rankings: 299 (RPI), 257 (Pomeroy), 253 (Seven Overtimes)
Outlook/Seed: It’s difficult to imagine Liberty not losing on Tuesday in Dayton. Coming into today, the next lowest ranked team expected to earn a bid was ranked more than 100 spots ahead of them on SevenOvertimes.
