Renaldo Balkman Freaked Out, Pushing Referees and Coaches & Choking a Teammate During a Game [Video] [UPDATE]
Renaldo Balkman freaked out during a Philippine Basketball Association game last night, shoving referees, coaches and teammates before eventually putting his hands on the throat of teammate, Arwind Santos. Balkman, who currently plays for the Petron Blaze Boosters in the PBA, was upset after a non-call late in a game against the Alaska Aces. He goes after all three referees while coaches and teammates try to cool him down. Eventually, one teammate shoved back and Balkman responded by putting his hands on his throat. Eventually, someone came out of the stands wearing a denim shirt with the sleeves cut off to calm Balkman. Announcers thought it might be a friend.
You may recall Balkman as a first round pick of the New York Knicks in the 2006 Draft. Balkman spent two years in New York before he was traded to the Nuggets and then back to the Knicks as part of the Carmelo Anthony deal. Last year he was released to make room for J.R. Smith.
[UPDATE] Balkman’s PR staff has released a statement:
“I, Renaldo Balkman, would like to apologize to my teammates, the fans, the entire Philippines Basketball association, and the entire Perton Blaze Boosters organization. I would especially like to apologize to Arwind Santos and his family. I would never intentionally inflict harm on another human being, especially a teammate who I respect deeply.
My behaviors, during a very intense moment of a heated game, game as a surprise even to me. It is not in my character to react physically in any situation and this is the first time I have ever behaved in such a manor. My actions were out of line and I am ready to fully accept any consequences for my actions. I hope that the Petron Blaze Boosters management will recognize this unfortunate situation as a slip up that will never happen again.”

When they announced Balkman as the draft choice, Spike Lee came out, clapping wildly and was defending the move. A hilarious scene.

I have a good friend who owns the Saigon Heat in the ASEAN league. First pro basketball team in Vietnam. He definitely wasn’t rich a few years ago when he moved from Houston back to Vietnam. No idea what the player salaries are but they can’t be much.

I think the only name I’ve ever recognized on the Saigon Heat was Julius Hodge.

Rondo went with the next pick. Isiah was so delusional that he felt that a 20 win team was a “glue player” like Balkman from a title, rather than a more high-ceiling player.

I gotta imagine the quality of groupies in the PBA isnt so bad though.

I enjoy having fun at Isiah’s expense, but that criticism isn’t really fair. Rondo turned out to be the 1st or 2nd best player from that draft, but 19 other teams passed before the Knicks did. And it’s not like Rondo came out and dominated. He backed up Telfair for a while there I think.
/has change of heart
//kicks Isiah in the stomach
Ok I admit that’s more fun.

” In the NBA’s official draft guide, which was released to all reporters covering the draft, Balkman was not included in the list of the 300 top players eligible to be drafted in the 2006-07 rookie class”

Almost all of my friends I met through basketball or tennis. I used to play ball on the “asian side” of the gym in college and most of my best friends I met there.

Still trying to figure out how Tyrus Thomas ended up a first-round pick.
March 8th, 2013 at 12:03 PM
man talk about going from the top playing for the Knicks to the dark depths of the bottom.
March 8th, 2013 at 3:11 PM
Hindsight’s 20/20 but hilarious that they picked Balkman right before Rondo. Whoops. Double whoops for Phoenix trading him on draft night to save $.
Also, Tyrus Thomas was a high energy, super athletic 4 coming out of college. Was a good pick at the time, but yeah didn’t turn out so well. Will happen again and again…
