i told this story a few times here. i was on the fb team at u of idaho in 84/85. john l smith was one of the coaches. in spring conditioning i made the mistake of asking him how i could deal with a stitch in my side during a drill. he shouted

When I played in the 80s, there was an old way of thinking among coaches that you didn’t want guys drinking too much water.

My HS position coach fought in Korea. Whenever we’d ask for water, he’d start talking about getting shot at by the Chinese and not getting any water. Then he’d give us a salt tablet.
