Colin Cowherd Has Some Thoughts on Richard Sherman vs. Skip Bayless, and I Think He Took a Shot at Jim Rome or Mike Francesa, Too
Bill Simmons opened the floodgates, I guess.
While ESPN employees are usually reluctant to criticize anything under the ESPN umbrella – most remember Tony Kornheiser getting suspended for talking about Hannah Storm’s wardrobe in 2010? – Simmons chiming in on the latest First Take debacle may have empowered others to do the same. Colin Cowherd went on his ESPN radio show this morning and went on a lengthy rant (we’ve only included part of it) about the show, Skip Bayless, Richard Sherman and publicity, among other things. Cowherd didn’t blast the show the way Simmons did, but didn’t defend it, either.
“First Take is just not my shtick. That’s not the kind of show I would do. It’s not what I would do … it’s not my thing,” he said.
Also, Cowherd took a thinly-veiled shot (:39) at another radio host (Jim Rome? Dan Patrick? Mike Francesa?) when he said “there’s a radio guy out there that made a career on ripping people, and then they come on the show, and it’s suck up time. I don’t do that.” Any guesses who he’s talking about there?

This is on the verge of getting more attention than the Manti T’eo thing, and for much less reason.

Sounds like Rome to me.

Does Dan Patrick ‘rip’ people? I don’t recall him doing that, at least not on a regular basis.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:02 PM
Howard Stern?
March 8th, 2013 at 1:05 PM
Mike Francesa unless he has a Jet on then he will destroy them when they are on the phone. Anyone else he cowers to after berating them.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:08 PM
Kind of a quiet day around here.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:09 PM
So people really think Sherman came off sounding better than Bayless in that clip huh?
March 8th, 2013 at 1:10 PM
The First Take producers have to be popping champagne and eating caviar right about now. I bet their ratings skyrocket in the next week or so.

I just got done cleaning another 10 inches of snow we got in the NW corner of CT. Cant wait till next week when they are calling for 55 degree weather.

In future news, ESPN announces that First Take has been renewed for three more years.

Going to hit 71 here today.

I would say Mad Dog Russo, but he only talks about his kid’s fifth grade basketball team anymore.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
The clip I saw from the earlier post made Sherman look like the prick he certainly seems to be. The line about being better at life made me laugh though.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
Sounds like an exact description of Rome.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
Gotta be Rome. His shtick in the beginning was the raw, “you suck at our sport” attitude. But as he’s gotten older he’s also gotten softer. Now after every interview, he’s like, “Wow. . Freakin’. . How awesome is he? Great interview. Just great.”

damn. im looking outside dreading it. have told wife to PLEASE not want to go anywhere. i just hate shoveling. we only have 3-4 inches but it’s cold and i hate the winter
March 8th, 2013 at 1:14 PM
Methinks you might want to move sometime soon.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:15 PM
The cynical person in me wants to believe that this has all been orchestrated by ESPN to gain more viewers. Continually bait a player who they know has a loud mouth, invite athlete on the show and watch the sparks fly. Then have 2 of its most well know media personalities publicly criticize the show and watch ratings grow.
probably far fetched I know
March 8th, 2013 at 1:16 PM
I wouldn’t go that far. I don’t think they were hoping it would be this awkward, but they knew Sherman would run his mouth and it seems to have worked.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:17 PM
shrinkage?
I finally broke down and watched the Sherman/Bayless thing. I actually thought Skip handled it pretty well.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:17 PM
‘only’ 63* here today. lousy Smarch weather.

It was easy, didn’t even need the snow blower. It was real light. Not anymore as temps are already rising.

I flexed before and after I wrecked that driveway. It will be 71 soon enough. Wouldn’t leave New England for anyplace.

Let Rome and Cowherd interview the same sports figure, Rome gets the better radio interview 10 out of 10 times. Cowherd has a good schtick that keeps his bank account padded but he’s about one DUI or domestic incident from being a regular on First Take. He should quiet down.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:19 PM
shrinkage?
I was in the pool! I was in the pool!

So maybe all of those scientists were right after all.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:21 PM
agreed
rome had the rat family back in the day and hated on nascar and horse racing, those are long in the past now. he doesn’t hammer people on a consistent basis like other hosts do. he definitely doesn’t hammer them and then bring them on the show.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:22 PM
So maybe all of those scientists were right after all.
In the long run it doesn’t really matter as another ice age is inevitable.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:22 PM
Here is Mike Francesa for you. “Yankees need to be working the trade lines. I don’t understand why Mo retiring is a big deal. We got 1 more year out of him. They need to work the trade lines so they compete this year.”
Same rant as yesterday. The Spanks need to compete so everyone should give their players to them since they don’t have a chance such as Minnesota.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:24 PM
i went to the pool at 6:15 this morning and swam for an hour.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:24 PM
It would appear as if regular seasons in basketball aren’t moving the needle and we’re too far away from the Draft yet so sports talk radio agreed that a little navel-gazing was the best way to fill the hours
March 8th, 2013 at 1:25 PM
Cowher, Van Pelt, and Russillo always take thinly veiled shots at Bayless and First Take. They don’t mention it by name but will mock something that was discussed on the show.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:26 PM
i went to the pool at 6:15 this morning and swam for an hour.
Yup. I was at the pool early this morning also. A pool of snow.

Maybe he’s talking about Jim Rome, dunno. I think Rome is a douche. thought he was a douche when he did that thing in in ’94 on ESPN2 (they’re edgy!) with Jim Everett. I saw that one live cause it was on when I got home from work around 3:30-4pm. Was so glad when Jim clocked his ass.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:31 PM
I’d be interested to see what, if anything, simmons does next. I’d be surprised if its a topic on the BS report or an article on Grantland.

as it relates to this topic and his tweets from earlier today
March 8th, 2013 at 1:31 PM
Rack him!
March 8th, 2013 at 1:33 PM
Jesus jdeeser, why do you even listen to Francesa given your obvious disdain for the Yankees? They are the most popular team in the city where his show is based, and they’ve made the playoffs 13 out of 14 years…what the hell is he supposed to say? That they should just give up on the season now, play the guys they have, and hope for the best? Would anyone tune in for that?
March 8th, 2013 at 1:34 PM
i just hate shoveling. we only have 3-4 inches
i need to see your man card. 3-4″ does not require shoveling bro.

Are you doing that with the voice of the hangman in Braveheart??
/kinda imagining it that way

March 8th, 2013 at 1:44 PM
Of course he’s alluding to Rome.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:46 PM
The official explanation was, he choked on vomit.
It was actually someone else’s vomit.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:48 PM
These guys are all professional trolls.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:53 PM
It’s gotta be Rome. And did you know Patrick is friends with Adam Sandler?
March 8th, 2013 at 1:55 PM
as Simmons said it was embarrassing for everyone involved. like everything on ESPN, it was only a blatant attempt for Sherman and Bayless to further their respective “brands.”
I’d call it kabuki theater, but kabuki theater has genuine artistic merit.
March 8th, 2013 at 1:57 PM
instead of cowerheard ot should be cowerhard right
March 8th, 2013 at 1:59 PM
he’s taking a shot at Rome. no doubt.
March 8th, 2013 at 2:08 PM
cowherd does a pretty good job a kissing ass, as well.

I needed a few laughs and have been following him for a long time along with WEEI. WEEI gets off on drama too much for me and I can’t get Boston Sports Hub radio in my area when in the truck.
March 8th, 2013 at 2:48 PM
Hate first take. I found Cowherd entertaining, opinionated with at least his own research to back up his side, which is something. I never liked Rome. He is what Joe Buck would be if he listened to all the hipster brah’s out there. A tiresome act.
March 8th, 2013 at 3:31 PM
Until the Jet player’s agent instructs him to hang up on Mike. #Revis
March 8th, 2013 at 3:49 PM
I was a huge Rome fan back in the late 90′s-early 00′s (disclaimer: I was a college kid at the time). Cowherd is a much better listen right now – he follows the Kornheiser approach that athletes make for lousy interviews in general so why bother (I agree). Rome does get some good interviews but he lost his schtick has gotten dull, to me anyways.
