The Chicago Blackhawks’ Point Streak Reaches 30, Inches Closer to NHL Record
The Chicago Blackhawks’ incredible point streak continued last night against the Colorado Avalanche. Daniel Carcillo scored his first goal of the season with 49.3 seconds remaining to secure a 3-2 victory and preserve points for the 30th consecutive regular-season game. It’s the second-longest campaign in NHL history and is currently five shy of the mark set by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1979-80.
Excluding the playoffs, Chicago hasn’t been defeated in regulation since March 25 of last year. Hockey remains the least popular of the four major sports; therefore attempts to put the accomplishment into proper context have at times been predictably clumsy and haphazard. Perhaps the best way to demonstrate the breadth of this mark is to highlight all that’s happened since the last time a team dispatched the Blackhawks in the allotted 60 minutes.
We discovered and soon regretted discovering “Call Me Maybe.” We watched LeBron James win an NBA title and then immediately wondered why he doesn’t have as many as Michael Jordan. Tim Tebow became a New York Jet and everyone got excited for one day. Ben Affleck became the most respected man in Hollywood. The Lumineers became a thing people knew.
So, yeah, a lot has happened. And that’s just the really cultural, important stuff.
Look, comparing what the Blackhawks are doing to what teams are doing in other sports is a fruitless exercise in comparing apples to oranges. Even worse, it diminishes what is a fabulous and compelling story line by insisting it fit into a box in which it isn’t necessarily supposed to fit.
One doesn’t have to be a hockey expert – or even a casual fan – to know that avoiding an adverse result for 30 straight games in a world of parity is damn impressive. More than that, the streak is serving as a giant Band-Aid for the NHL as it seeks to regain public favor after yet another work stoppage. The powers-that-be were begging for any pre-playoff happening to draw people in.
And that’s exactly what the Blackhawks are doing. One game at a time.

Yay
March 7th, 2013 at 10:14 AM
This is so fucking stupid. The 24 point streak is incredible. Wrapping it around to the previous regular season and cutting out the playoffs makes no sense whatsoever. That’s some New Orleans Saints level pointless recordkeeping there.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:15 AM
Which they have not done.
Also nice link dump for unrelated stuff disguised as a hockey post.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:15 AM
Agreed.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:15 AM
Some things don’t need explaining. They just need to be witnessed and enjoyed.
When you only dress 11 forwards and by the third period are down a goal, missing two top six forwards, a third line center and a 4th line stalwart then get a shorthanded goal to tie the game (nice $5M a year defense, O’Reilly) which is followed by Gorilla Salad of all people notching the GWG with just under a minute left… you just watch and clap and smile.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:16 AM
Get the record then start backing off a bit…they wont go undefeated through 2013

Well played Mantis, except for just pasting the youtube link in.

Meatballs are saying the hawks are unbeaten in the game of hockey with 3 losses in the skills competition
March 7th, 2013 at 10:21 AM
They didn’t win the Cup
Longest flat out winning streak is by the Pens in 93 – 17 games. They didn’t win the Cup either.

Now you know how golf fans feel about TBL’s feeble attempts to cover our sport.

Way to go out on a limb there.

TBL just deleted his afternoon post.

I figured typing in “this” would be outdated. We no longer live in the year 2010.

If they can rip off another 47 straight, they have a chance to lead SportsCenter.

March 7th, 2013 at 10:24 AM
This sentence was a bit excessive.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:24 AM
Unless some kid in Oklahoma hits a game-winning buzzer-beater from halfcourt that day.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:24 AM
As much as I love John Buccigross, it was sad to see him go off on SBN for their piece on how Sportscenter’s attention to hockey is part of the larger issue of the network’s problems. So clearly right, and yet he has to be the company man even though he’s one of the only smart hockey guys they have yet plays second fiddle to Barry Melrose, the worst hockey mind in the world.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:25 AM
Just got an email from the Ritz promoting a $10,000 package that includes a suite and other goodies plus floor seats to the CHA-NYK game and some meet and greets. Any takers? It is for charity, but $10,000 does seem steep.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:25 AM
That moment is right up there (but just not quite to the same level) as Sid Bream in my worst youth memories. Particularly after the way the Pens tied that game to force OT.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:25 AM
Lepore handled Bucci pretty well.
Sorry I’m not sorry.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:26 AM
Where did he go off? Twitter?

Now imagine him jerking off while writing it, because I bet he was.

Hockey gets no respect.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:27 AM
Yeah called them ignorant and clueless or some shit like that.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:27 AM
Agreed that the Heat run is more impressive because you dont get to lose in overtime and somehow not call it a loss.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:27 AM
I figured typing in “this” would be outdated. We no longer live in the year 2010.
This.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:28 AM
I am thankful I was only 5/6 years old when both of those happened. Although it is sad the Pirates haven’t had a winning season since I started Kindergarten.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:29 AM
In his defense, SBN is awful most of the time. Sure, they have some great stuff, but they also have SOOOO much crap. It’s not BR bad (which is oh-so terrible) but it has its pieces of shit for sure.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:29 AM
I think everyone was hoping for a Pens-Kings final so Gretz and Mario could play for the Cup. Barry Melrose fucked up Wayne’s shot at a Cup post-EDM anyways. IIRC the Isles got mollywhopped by the Habs in the Conference Finals. They blew their nut against the Pens.
Pens embarrassed the Hawks the year prior. Steve Larmer, as much as I love him, gave up a terrible goal with like 40 seconds left in the third. Just left Mario all alone and the Pens never looked back after that.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:30 AM
What, you don’t want to know who the top 73 guards in football are?
March 7th, 2013 at 10:30 AM
Steve Larmer: hero.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:30 AM
38 of them are tackles if that’s written here.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:30 AM
That stat is amazing to me. One of the truly amazing stats in team sports.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:30 AM
Sounds like this team will lose in the first round of the playoffs.

he scored on me in rat hockey. lucky
March 7th, 2013 at 10:32 AM
With everyone so bunched in the standings due to the shortened season this is definitely going to be the most interesting year in terms of upsets in a long while I think. Prime candidate right now would be Montreal, I don’t see any world where they’re beating the Rangers in a seven game series.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:32 AM
It reeks of that. Historic regular season followed by colossal disappointment in the playoffs.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:33 AM
They got all of this VC funding and they hired some truly terrible writers. The SEC dude (Barrett Sallee) seems like a really nice guy, but sweet jesus he can’t write. The Keggs N Eggs cat is a good follow on Twitter, but every fucking thing he writes is formatted as a 10-page slide show. Just awful stuff.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:33 AM
And it’s pretty much why I’ve never cared about baseball.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:33 AM
short season. put an * next to any record.
/nods at Phil Jackson
March 7th, 2013 at 10:33 AM
Technically the Hawks haven’t lost in overtime. All of their losses have come in the shootout (and shootouts to end a game are stupid).
March 7th, 2013 at 10:33 AM
That 91 Braves team was great. They had an absurd winning streak, I think Otis Nixon pulled some homer back to clinch one, which was rarer at the time and I think Fulton had higher OF walls.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:34 AM
Sounds like this team will lose in the first round of the playoffs.
probably not but the ghost of 17-0 patriots is already warming up to get in this game
March 7th, 2013 at 10:34 AM
You should berate them more on Twitter. I’m sure it helps them get better at their craft.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:35 AM

I don’t think I follow but 1-2 people who work there. Keggs N Eggs and In The Bleachers, who is a good football guy, but not the best Twitter follower.

Vietcong fund Bleacher Report?
They wear yellow pajamas.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:37 AM
Kind of like that year Seattle managed to win 116 games and piss down their leg against the Yankees.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:37 AM
The Blues, too. They were the hot western conference pick to start the year but Hitch’s boys don’t have the skill and speed to keep up with the heavyweights in the West. The Blues under Hitchcock remind me of what Trotz has done in Nashville all these years. The difference is I hope Nashville gets to the finals one day whereas I hope the Blues never make it out of the first round.

March 7th, 2013 at 10:39 AM
All I know is once the Penguins offload Kennedy and a first round pick for Iginla shit is going to get real. Lots of 8-7 games on the horizon.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:39 AM
THat’s a fantastic question, and one in which I have no clue. If I remember correctly (I probably don’t) they took in something like $40 million in VC funding before being bought for $200+ million by Turner. They should have plenty of money to pay the writers, but they still use so much unpaid stuff to go along with their newly hired crew.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:39 AM
Unfortunately I think if anyone is going to knock Chicago off in the playoffs it’s Vancouver. Hawks goaltenders are not expected to be this good all year. Vancouver has some players on the shelf right now, they should get Kesler back right before the playoffs. I’d take their two goalies in the playoffs over anyone else.
The problem in Vancouver isn’t the players though. It’s the coach. They get over the hurdles he puts in front of them and I think this season is set up for them to finally win.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:40 AM
Which is going to make it even funnier when they blow it again.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:42 AM
I think a more impressive stat is that the Blackhawks’ backup goalie has gone undefeated in 10 starts.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:42 AM
So what happens then? Does the entire city burn?
March 7th, 2013 at 10:43 AM
this streak has clued me into one of the NHL’s trophies, the Jennings, for best goalie duo. emery and crawford obviously leaders in the clubhouse
March 7th, 2013 at 10:44 AM
Can only hope they draw someone like Nashville in the first round. It’ll probably be someone like San Jose or Detroit though. Canucks will win those series in 5 or 6 games.
Must be nice to play in the NW division and know you’ll be a top 3 seed in the playoffs though.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:44 AM
That’s some New Orleans Saints level pointless recordkeeping there.
Never change, Cowboy Mike.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:45 AM
how much do you think they get paid?
bylines
March 7th, 2013 at 10:46 AM
I’d be fine with San Jose in the first round. Do not want Detroit or LA. Anaheim in the WCF will be a very tough out.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:47 AM
They should have plenty of money to pay the writers, but they still use so much unpaid stuff to go along with their newly hired crew.
i have no data to back this up (surprise) but it seems that the explosion of blogs and the cache of telling your buddies you write for a big sports blog has made sportswriting so oversaturated that it pays pretty low i bet. so many stats nerds–not negative–can be somewhat legible so the emphasis on advanced stats has opened spots for a lot of folks who otherwise had no background or training in ‘journalism’ or writing/reporting. bar is low too for quality reads and the combo makes every sports fan a byline candidate
March 7th, 2013 at 10:48 AM
SC, did you get season tickets for this year? If so I would imagine you’re crazy happy about that decision.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:49 AM

i like the chicken-fucking choice for these situations. i assume they are interchangeable

March 7th, 2013 at 10:50 AM
At first I assumed this was a trolling comment poking fun at others who have said similar silly things. But in case it’s not, you’re wrong. This IS called a loss. Also, the Hawks haven’t lost in OT, they’ve lost in 3 SO’s. But still, they have 3 losses.
You may all now go back to your regularly-scheduled…whatever it is you’re doing.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:51 AM
This is my last year for Hawks season tickets.
I bought into the Cubs season tickets for this coming baseball season. Trying to get in early so that once they right the ship in a couple years I can start making money off those. The wait list finally opened up and I pounced on it.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:52 AM

Excluding the majors he didn’t win, Tiger Woods is undefeated in Majors.

I sold them to one person for next season.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:59 AM
That’s pricey, no?
March 7th, 2013 at 11:03 AM
Friend of a dude at my office was trying to unload his hawks tickets the other day. Not sure what the details on them were but wanted a shit ton for them.
March 7th, 2013 at 11:05 AM
First off, sportswriting has never paid well. There are a handful of well paid guys but journalism in general is a terrible career choice for those looking to maximize their income.
Second, if you think the massive profit bleacher report got in their 2nd purchase went to the writers, you are stupid. Many early investors and tech guys pocketed 98% of that. Like hey we got bought out, all the writers are getting 20k, go use it on a down payment on a benz.
Hacks got a new updated mousepad and maybe a paperweight. Dont kid yourself.

The lack of reaction post there to Flacco’s contract was heartbreaking
March 7th, 2013 at 11:22 AM
It could be that someone is working on that right now, but will not hit publish until it’s absolutely perfect.
/not really. I think it boils down to laziness and a lack of creative vision, but I will continue using the “will not hit publish until it’s absolutely perfect” excuse indefinitely.

I wish people understood and respected the time and effort it takes to Photoshop a sombrero made of gold bullion on to Flacco.
