Mariano Rivera Will Retire From Baseball, After the 2013 Season
Mariano Rivera will retire from MLB, after the 2013 season. The Yankees have a press conference scheduled for 10am on Saturday. Not sure that’s a huge surprise. Rivera came back this season, ostensibly to go out on his own terms, rather than Kauffman Stadium‘s.
Rivera is likable and one of the few presumed to be clean baseball players of his generation. Expect media outlets to wear this out in the dog days of July. “This could be the last time Mariano Rivera….”
Enjoy the five hours Francesa spends on it this afternoon.

Rivera is one of the few likable, presumed to be clean baseball players.
Huh? Going to go out on a limb here and say a majority of MLB players compared to NFL or NBA players are “likeable”
March 7th, 2013 at 1:58 PM
This is one of the stupidest fucking things I’ve ever read on this site. Bravo.
Can’t wait until NBA players all get exposed for using PEDs, and then all become unlikable.
March 7th, 2013 at 1:59 PM
Rivera is clearly announcing his “retirement” just to spare the shame of the obvious PED/gambling scandal that would destroy his life’s work if he didn’t get out ahead of the fire.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:00 PM
I wouldn’t go that far – I think players from all sports are equal amounts likable or unlikable. The idea that it’s because of PED use is beyond stupid.
Either that, or Duffy doesn’t like Hispanics and then things begin to make a lot more sense.

farewell tour!

I read it as MLB players being likeable and PED use as two different things.

Mariano Rivera is a career Yankee. I don’t find him to be likable at all.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:03 PM
While I was taking a dump this morning I caught myself reflecting upon the injury problems the Yankees have been having and whether this season would mark the end of that era. This pretty much seals it.

farewell tour!
Allow me to be the first to say “Farewell!”

Yes. That would be what a comma would indicate.

presumed to be clean baseball players
of all the guys you’re going to presume to be clean – you pick the pitcher in his late 30′s who still gets guys out?
March 7th, 2013 at 2:05 PM
Yes. That would be what a comma would indicate.
No need for snark dude. I was correcting someone else.

He is only one of a few?

Ah, sad that he will mark his final year on the first Yankees team in 21 seasons to finish below .500.

That sounds awesome to me

/Sits back and waits for WWos.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:09 PM
Even Red Sox fans like Rivera.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:09 PM
Shocker. Hope he blows out his other knee catching cans of corn.

Even Red Sox fans like Rivera.
Well, then, fuck them too

Considering he was 43 entering spring training, those PEDs have certainly worked a miracle in reversing the aging process!
March 7th, 2013 at 2:11 PM
With any luck he’ll keep injuring himself and having to come back, eventually becoming a Jobian figure for our times as he is constantly badgered with questions as to why God would do this to such a righteous man. Still, his faith will be unshakable, and in the end he will be rewarded with a final healthy season at age 682.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:11 PM
Watch out for when Mullet spring out from behind the door with a battle axe.

Considering he was 43 entering spring training
damn. I didn’t know he was THAT old. Makes my point even better.

Awaits biting zinger that cleverly ties in the 2004 ALCS.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:18 PM
Is the guy up there Rivera? He seems several shades too dark for that statement to make a lick of sense.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:20 PM
all players should wear 42 all year

All-timer. Hope he saved some money. Go sit on a beach somewhere.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:22 PM
The fact that he is going to make almost $160 million (pre-tax) for his career and only top 100 IP once in 19 years is simply astounding.
/not to use stupid, meaningless-Sportscenter match but $130,690 per inning for a career. Wow.

Him and Pedro. I’m not even putting Jeter or Griffey in that category.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:30 PM
Whoa, whoa, whoa, slow your roll.
Respect? Sure. Like? No. He’s still a Yankee, and I still wish bad things on him.

Him and Pedro.
thome
March 7th, 2013 at 2:32 PM
Performance-wise against the Red Sox, yes.
I would like to see him have decent numbers this year and go out on top… not really gonna help the Yankees much anyway since closers generally don’t mean shit.
But I don’t wish him any personal harm or hope for a PED scandal like I might with other members of NYY or other AL East teams.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:34 PM
It was so clear that you had to go back and change it.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:38 PM
Exit Sandman.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:39 PM
really?
Griffey, Thome, and Frank Thomas are the only 90′s sluggers I’d feel confident about being clean.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:40 PM
If you want to argue about the merit of saves, fine. But regardless of where Mariano was going to pitch he definitely would have helped the Yankees.
/Brewers pen blew 29 games last year. I’d throw a parade for somebody like Mariano coming to Milwaukee.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:40 PM
I guess that makes you a better man than I.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:47 PM
Pedro clean, stupposedly, but most certainly not likable.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:49 PM
but most certainly not likable.
the old man was charging him!
what the heck would you do in that situation?
March 7th, 2013 at 2:49 PM
I don’t think anyone outside of Boston would say that Pedro is likable.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:49 PM
My favorite Mariano moment was when he tipped his cap to the Fenway crowd while he was being cheered after the rest of the Yankees roster was loudly booed.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:51 PM
I don’t think anyone outside of Boston would say that Pedro is likable.
no love from the nucks?
March 7th, 2013 at 2:52 PM
I’m sure there are enough jheri curl enthusiasts to stick up for him.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:53 PM
Opening Day 2005, right after the Sox got their WS rings.
March 7th, 2013 at 2:57 PM
I like Pedro. I can’t say I’d be even sort of surprised to hear Thome and Frank Thomas being implicated as PED users. Frank Thomas looked like the gd Incredible Hulk
March 7th, 2013 at 3:00 PM
Nah, none of those guys gets a pass. I’d put Thomas on the list of “probably not”, but you just don’t know, too many long careers with injury recoveries and homers etc.
But yeah, few people outside of Boston love Pedro, but I’ll never acknowledge that. One year he gave up 7 runs to Toronto (?) in his first start, then maybe 7 the rest of the way till the break. He was ridiculous.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:06 PM
Griffey had a reputation for being less than devoted to hitting the gym. guys who aren’t workout freaks don’t tend to take PEDs. as for Thomas he was always a big dude.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
Players I would stake my reputation on saying they were clean.
1) Pedro
2) Me
And if I had access to hGH to fix my knees from running, I’d do it in an division-2 WR-trying-to-get-free-ESPN-publicity second.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
Good riddance.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:11 PM
Now it’s Jeter’s turn.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:14 PM
Get me some while you’re at it.
/ I miss running
