Kentucky Lost to Georgia, and Probably Will Miss the NCAA Tournament a Year After Winning the Title
Kentucky lost to lowly Georgia Thursday, 72-62, and Big Blue Nation is officially in panic mode. The Wildcats chances to reach the NCAA Tournament suddenly don’t look good. In fact, one could argue they need to reach the final of the SEC Tournament to have any shot at dancing.
Here’s their weak resume:
Record: 20-10, 11-6 in the SEC. They’re in a logjam for 2nd currently with a slew of other mediocre teams on the bubble – Missouri, Mississippi, and Alabama.
RPI before the Georgia loss: 53
SOS before the Georgia loss: 78
RPI Top 25 record: 0-3
RPI Top 26-50 record: 1-1 (beat Missouri at home two weeks ago)
Last 7 games: 3-4, all losses on the road
Kentucky will need a minor miracle to beat Florida at home Saturday, and then there’s the SEC tournament, which is actually wide open as long as you’re not in Florida’s half of the bracket.
It should be noted UK is 3-4 since Nerlens Noel went down against Florida in February. Fairly soon, the question is going to be, “so, who comes back next year to this team given how stacked the recruiting class is?”

Good riddance to overhyped players

I’m not sure. Seemingly every bubble team a terrible loss, if not a collection of bad losses. What to make of Minnesota, for example, who knocked off then-No. 1 Indiana but lost to Nebraska last night? My guess is reputation gets UK in.

Which is not to say I disagree with the merits of your headline. I just see the committee bending over for a perennial power.

Good riddance to over
hypedpaid playersProbably fixed…
//Will still get one of the 12 seed play-in games.

If anything, the play in games. Beat no good teams, had some awful losses. Nerlens noel won them so many games singlehandedly and theyve been exposed as a mediocre team since he went down

A few years ago, Syracuse had a pretty good record in a tough big east conference and got snubbed. It happens

Tennessee is dancing BABY!
March 7th, 2013 at 10:16 PM
These refs love Kevin Durant
March 7th, 2013 at 10:17 PM
Maybe. SEC will be lucky if they get more than 2 teams (florida and mizzou are locks)
March 7th, 2013 at 10:17 PM
Hope you’re right. The resume is crap.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:18 PM
Darrell, i just keeping telling JR smith to shoot. Its hilarious
March 7th, 2013 at 10:21 PM
keep telling him for tonight!

Tennessee is awful, I agree. The whole league is a disgrace. Its almost like the AD’s got together and decided everyone was going to suck at basketball other than UK (and Florida since a monkey could win there) just out of principle.
Also, if you want the epitome of inbred jackasses, this is some good reading;

Memphis Tiger fans everywhere are saying “told ya so”.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:26 PM
there has to be a Knicks post if they win about how they’re better without Melo, AMIRITE?
March 7th, 2013 at 10:27 PM
I’ve never been so wrong about a team as I was Kentucky. I probably had the blinders on from last year’s NC game. That was a one of a kind Freshman class.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:28 PM
You’re writing it now, aren’t you? Go ahead and admit it.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:33 PM
C’mon, you know had that article written right after Lin went to Houston, and you were just waiting for the most opportune time. You were on ready, set since July…lol
March 7th, 2013 at 10:34 PM
Yep. And it’ll be a half-mailbag on Grantland.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:41 PM
Does Iman Shumpert realize he isn’t good on offense?
March 7th, 2013 at 10:41 PM
Talk about a terrible conference…CUSA is a huge steaming pile
March 7th, 2013 at 10:47 PM
Yep. And the defectors to the new Big East are gonna call it what? America’s 12 or somesuch? Sounds like the name of a mid-quality hotel on the interstate.
C-USA is a textbook example of how not to handle all the conference upheaval.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:52 PM
Good game. Does this mean that TBL is putting that article on ice?
March 7th, 2013 at 10:53 PM
I’d hope so, Benjamin. Unless he just wants to mess with us a bit by tweaking it to reflect the actual result.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:54 PM
He’ll just substitute Lin in for Melo somehow.
March 7th, 2013 at 10:57 PM
I hope Faried or McGee put Blake on his ass tonight
March 7th, 2013 at 10:58 PM
what are your thoughts on the game tonight?
March 7th, 2013 at 11:05 PM
Felt pretty much the same way after the Miami game, they let a very winnable game slip away. They just get too stagnant on offense from the midway point of the 4th quarter onwards. They’re at their best when Felton is driving and creating, but for some reason they think JR/Melo isos are the way to go in crunch time.
March 7th, 2013 at 11:06 PM
JR was lights out in the 3rd, but man his shot selection is awful. That final play was the worst.
March 7th, 2013 at 11:06 PM
I feel like SEC fans are actually proud of their teams sucking at hoops. It’s like any athletic department trying to win at hoops isn’t putting enough energy into football.
March 7th, 2013 at 11:25 PM
It’s funny, as bad the SEC is in basketball, there’s a good chance an SEC team cuts down the nets this year. Florida has everything required for a deep tournament run, and Donovan’s already got hardware, so he has the pedigree.
March 7th, 2013 at 11:35 PM
Which goes to show conference strength means almost nothing in a one and done tournament. It’s all about matchups. I don’t like what Florida does late in games so I think some team will nip them, but they are definitely in the discussion. If I had to rank the ten teams I would bet to win the title right now in order I would go
1. Indiana
2. Kansas
3. Louisville
4. Florida
5. Michigan State
6. Duke
7. Gonzaga
8. Michigan
9. Miami
10. Ohio State
4 big ten teams, but that is not based on playing a tough schedule, but more based on how they play. Other than Indiana they can all lock down defensively. Combine that with some playmakers offensively to bail them out I think they stack up nice.
Don’t think Georgetown can win with how bad the supporting cast outside of Porter is.
March 7th, 2013 at 11:37 PM
Billy Donovan is the best coach in the country that nobody talks about, mostly because there are no Florida basketball fans.
March 7th, 2013 at 11:41 PM
Syracuse looks like a first weekend loser unless Southerland and Triche go nuts.
/weeps
March 7th, 2013 at 11:43 PM
The last time I really heard much about him was when he took the Magic job but reneged. He’s won 2 titles but is never in any discussions for best coach. I guess to get the pub it’s like you said about having fans or it’s about what have you done for me lately in the tournament.

60th in KenPom’s D rankings.
March 8th, 2013 at 12:04 AM
Well he’s been to 2 straight Elite 8′s. But in CBB it’s all about getting to the F4, which is why everyone loves Tom Izzo.
March 8th, 2013 at 2:35 AM
They are certainly mediocre, but saying Missouri is on the bubble is beyond brain dead. 22-8 (11-6 SEC), RPI 29. They could literally drop a steamer at halfcourt in Nashville (and probably will) and still earn an 8-seed.
March 8th, 2013 at 3:03 AM
I don’t understand this post. There are no buzzer beaters or dunks.
