Detroit Confirms It Will Not Be Bidding for the 2024 Olympics
Dashing the hope of the thousands still remaining within the city limits, Detroit mayor Dave Bing has confirmed the city will not be bidding for the 2024 Summer Olympics. With Detroit soon to be under emergency financial management, the $3 billion commitment for a frivolous athletic competition was a bit steep.
“With our rich history of hosting major events and Detroit’s prime location on an international border, we recognize that this makes Detroit an appealing candidate to potentially host the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics,” Bing said in a statement released this morning.
“However, the bid calls for a $10 million upfront bid process payment and adding more than a $3 billion operating budget commitment — not including cost associated with venue construction and other infrastructure cost. Unfortunately, due to the timing and uncertainty of Detroit’s long-term financial stability, we must respectfully decline to participate.”
It’s a shame. We are sure a 53-year-old Kid Rock would have killed it at the opening ceremony.
Detroit last made a serious play for the Olympics in 1968, which might not have been the ideal time to hold them. Still hoping for a far more sensible MLS team, but guessing the league will prefer to flame out in Florida, again, if the New York thing does not work out.

I can confirm that I will not be bidding to sleep with Kate Upton tonight.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:01 PM
I like that the city isn’t paying but 20%, though that just means everything at the stadium (not to mention the tickets) will be so expensive. Great.

This is a thing? Did they come up with that title in Japan and then translate it to English?
March 7th, 2013 at 3:01 PM
I have come around to the firm belief that if public funds are used to build arenas for privately owned teams, the public should receive an ownership stake in the team proportionate to its financial input on the project.
Otherwise, take your fucking team and move it to Virginia Beach, billionaire asshole.

Kid RockBob Seger would have killed it at the opening ceremony.March 7th, 2013 at 3:03 PM
I think it should be that whatever investment the city makes, the city should get that percentage of the profits.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:04 PM
I still think 20% is too high. I also think the pricing will be outrageous no matter what the city’s contribution is.
Otherwise, take your fucking team and move it to Virginia Beach, billionaire asshole.
All the way.

Alright Duffy… go get ‘em. They deserve to be mocked.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:06 PM
You say that 20%, but without doing any research, I’m guessing there’s like $200 million in tax breaks for the team/stadium too. It goes way beyond that initial investment.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:07 PM
I said that’s what it should be, not what it will ever be.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
Yeah – eveen with tax breaks – throw in all other kinds of loopholes, they’ll be operating at a loss and asking the city to contribute 20% toward the loss.

Just think … if Benson had moved the Saints to San Antonio after 2005 like he wanted, Drew Brees would not be the most reviled sports figure among TBL commenters.

what do you mean by ‘play’? Not very well. He got further in the NFL than Craig James did in politics…
Terrible tipper, pushes autograph-seeking kids out of the way. Lots of stories floating around about how big a jerk he is. Basically the only nice thing you can say about him is based on his fraudulent completion percentage because he can only throw it 5 yards at a time, he’s probably not on PEDs.
March 7th, 2013 at 3:16 PM
Eastwood played ball?
Also, I dispute that Arnold was an athlete. He lifted and took steroids, true, but so did Andre Smith, and I wouldn’t call him an athlete.

49 year old Eminem would have been more entertaining. And a Motown original Jackson 5 reunion, or Jackson 4.

Brees shills for a MLM pyramid scheme, that’s the main reason I don’t like him. Secondary reason is THE HEALING POWER OF SPORTS

I thought Tiger was a better tipper than Phil…

Is this a joke, How were they going to pay for it? Were they going to housed the athletes in the boarded and foreclosed homes?
