MLB Top 50 Players for 2013
The Cabrera/Trout debate raged last year, so let it begin again for 2013. Here are my player rankings entering the 2013 season for the Top 50 players in MLB. I guess I should say what this list is, and what it is not. It’s not a value list, because Mike Trout making so little would impact the rankings more. It is also not a futures list, trying to build a team for seasons beyond this one. It does take things like past performance and injuries and age into account, but only to try to pick players in order for just this season.
Think of it as a “who would you take?” if there was a draft to build a team to win the World Series this year.
1. Miguel Cabrera, 3B, Detroit Tigers
2. Joey Votto, 1B, Cincinnati Reds
3. Mike Trout, LF/CF, Anaheim Angels
4. Justin Verlander, P, Detroit Tigers
5. Ryan Braun, LF, Milwaukee Brewer
Mike Trout had a historic season, but also doesn’t have the track record of other top players. He’ll be good again, no doubt, but repeating a rare season is, well, rare at any age. Justin Verlander still has a ways to go to match Kate Upton in top five appearances on our website. Teammate Miguel Cabrera gets a slight boost for his appearance on Univision.
6. Buster Posey, C, San Francisco Giants
7. Robinson Cano, 2B, New York Yankees
8. Clayton Kershaw, P, Los Angeles Dodgers
9. Albert Pujols, 1B, Anaheim Angels
10. Troy Tulowitzki, SS, Colorado Rockies
Baseball Prospectus’ PECOTA projection is really high on Albert Pujols’ returning to his status as the best hitter in the game. He was a lot better after that rough two month start as an Angel, but I’m not sure he gets all the way back to the top spot. Buster Posey should probably be higher based on the fielding metrics that his new glove will provide. Troy Tulowitzki is the wildcard, injured much of last year.
11. Andrew McCutchen, CF, Pittsburgh Pirates
12. Matt Kemp, CF, Los Angeles Dodgers
13. Giancarlo Stanton, RF, Miami Marlins
14. Felix Hernandez, P, Seattle Mariners
15. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B, Los Angeles Dodgers
Two star centerfielders make the list here. King Felix is still one of the best pitchers in the game, even though he clearly lacks that competitive drive proven only by waiting to get paid by the Yankees, rather than re-signing in Seattle. Giancarlo Stanton is going to be awfully lonely on this list, and in Miami this year, after Jeff Loria pulled a Jeff Loria.
16. Evan Longoria, 3B, Tampa Bay Rays
17. Stephen Strasburg, P, Washington Nationals
18. Dustin Pedroia, 2B, Boston Red Sox
19. David Price, P, Tampa Bay Rays
20. Prince Fielder, 1B, Detroit Tigers
Evan Longoria gets the subliminal boost for having a child with Jaime Edmondson, joining teammate David Price here. I’m picking Stephen Strasburg here on the assumption that he is good to pitch for the entire season. Ty Duffy let me know how depressed he was that Pedroia is the only Red Sox on the list. Time to root for the Dodgers.
21. C.C. Sabathia, P, New York Yankees
22. Joe Mauer, C, Minnesota Twins
23. Yu Darvish, P, Texas Rangers
24. Jose Bautista, RF, Toronto Blue Jays
25. Jose Reyes, SS, Toronto Blue Jays
The two Jose’s in Toronto join the 70′s Super Group of C.C. and Yu.
26. Jered Weaver, P, Anaheim Angels
27. Yadier Molina, C, St. Louis Cardinals
28. David Wright, 3B, New York Mets
29. Pablo Sandoval, 3B, San Francisco Giants
30. Adrian Beltre, 3B, Texas Rangers
I couldn’t decide on third basemen and where to take them. So I just threw my hands up and put them all right here.
31. Cole Hamels, P, Philadelphia Phillies
32. Hanley Ramirez, SS, Los Angeles Dodgers
33. Alex Gordon, LF, Kansas City Royals
34. Cliff Lee, P, Philadelphia Phillies
35. Bryce Harper, LF, Washington Nationals
The Philadelphia pitchers come off the board here, with the exception of Roy Halladay. Big Roy should bounce back some at age 36, but I’m not comfortable putting him in the top ten or so pitchers entering the year.
36. Ben Zobrist, RF/2B/3B, Tampa Bay Rays
37. Jason Heyward, RF, Atlanta Braves
38. B.J. and Justin Upton, LF/CF, Atlanta Braves
39. Derek Jeter, SS and Captain, New York Yankees
40. Matt Cain, P, San Francisco Giants
The Atlanta outfield goes off the board here. At least one of the Uptons probably should be on this list, but which one? We’ll just combine them here as a package deal. That move opens up the spot for Yankees Captain Derek Jeter. We saw the Yankees fall apart in the postseason last year after he went down, proving he is worth at least three wins above replacement based on his presence alone. (I’ll now be waiting for that gift basket).
41. Chris Sale, P, Chicago White Sox
42. Josh Hamilton, LF, Anaheim Angels
43. Jason Kipnis, 2B, Cleveland Indians
44. Mat Latos, P, Cincinnati Reds
45. Starlin Castro, SS, Chicago Cubs
Josh Hamilton was the best player in the history of the May 2012 internet era, then struggled, relatively, for stretches of the season. He just signed the big contract to move to the Angels. How comfortably are we that he is going to put together a full season like 2010 again? This is also the young pitchers with upside to have huge years segment of the rankings.
46. Yoenis Cespedes, LF, Oakland Athletics
47. Carlos Beltran, RF, St. Louis Cardinals
48. Ian Kinsler, 2B, Texas Rangers
49. Zack Greinke, P, Anaheim Angels
50. R.A. Dickey, P, Toronto Blue Jays
I had to throw my boy Carlos Beltran in here, and also former Missouri Tiger Ian Kinsler. R.A. Dickey may be old, but he throws that knuckleball, so I think he’ll be just fine this year north of the border.

SOCAL is all the same.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:04 PM
Before I get lost in this post for a little while, are we doing a commenter mock draft this year? I want to pick EJ Manuel in the 1st round
March 6th, 2013 at 3:05 PM
And yet those two teams will account for 90% of the ESPN/Fox national baseball broadcasts.

Does your editor know you’re venturing into fraud territory so early on the list?
March 6th, 2013 at 3:07 PM
42. Josh Hamilton, LF, Anaheim Angels
Just wait until he discovers that Tijuana is only a couple short hours away.

This was the one guy I was afraid you were going to leave out. His starts will be marked on my calendar this year. Harry Pavlidis and Dan Brooks found a new quirk to his delivery through pitchF/X and they added a whole new category of pitch because of him this season. The slow curve. Obviously guys use a changeup to throw hitters off their timing. Darvish is one of the few pitchers in baseball that varies the speed of his curveball. When he’s ahead in the count, he slows it down because he knows hitters are sitting fastball and reacting to the breaking ball. There is an average difference of 9 MPH from his regular curve to his slow curve. Fully expect Darvish to take a massive step this year now that he’s got one year of experience in the Show.
It’s not Dice-K’s invisible wizard pitch or whatever that thing was. It’s real strategy and delivery.

I keep seeing these pop up. I thought we always did them in April?
March 6th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
It’s fair though… Red Sox have a LOT of middling talent, without top end players.
However Ortiz (unlikely, injury), Middlebrooks (potential, but likely a soph slump thanks to aggressive strike zone), Lester/Buchholz (both have flashed) and Ellsbury (nearly an MVP a couple years ago) all have that potential.
The more I think about it, the more I’m talking myself into Victorino (if he plays 150 games and hits .275/.340 it’s a success and Napoli (just need him to be a decent 5/6 hitter, with an okay OBP and some power) they have a chance.
The big if isn’t “if guys have career years” but more “if guys can stay healthy, re-gain their form”. The Sox can be competitive in the division if some players can just get back to levels they have previously been at.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
No mention of PEDs. Lisk is getting axed. Or this is an elaborate ruse of a sponsored post.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:09 PM
Cutch.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:09 PM
Also, I propose that Strasburg can be considered a Top 50 player only for 5/6ths of 2013, then has to be removed once he’s shut down for the season.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:10 PM
Also, go Dodgers!!

Yeah, but the sign-up is the key.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:11 PM
My team would be….
C – Posey
1B – Votto
2B – Kipnis
3B – Miggy
SS – Castro
Utility infielder off the bench/spot starts – Ben Zobrist
LF – Braun
CF – Trout
RF – Kemp (I know he’s out of position, sue me)
DH – Stanton
Give me about 10-15 minutes and I’ll come up with a rotation. I’d make a strong case for adding Craig Kimbrel to the list based on merit alone as well.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:11 PM
that seems like an awfully high ranking for Adrian Gonzalez
March 6th, 2013 at 3:11 PM
I’m very interested to see how the “Up Up and a Hey” (or whatever other stupid names you choose) ATL outfield will be. I’m not totally sold on them the way others are. It’s not a given that any one of them has an OBP of .350
March 6th, 2013 at 3:11 PM
Bryce Harper is too low
March 6th, 2013 at 3:12 PM
But Ian Kinsler should really prosper this season without all those late nights devoted to pulling Hamilton out of some bar on Lower Greenville.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:12 PM
Spring is here in two weeks and opening day less than two weeks after that. Makes me very happy.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:13 PM
Needs more cats and Kate Upton.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:13 PM
But Ian Kinsler should really prosper this season without all those late nights devoted to pulling Hamilton out of some bar on Lower Greenville.
Stan’s Blue Note, I have to imagine, has probably lost a ton of business.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:13 PM
Adrian had a .299/.344/.463 line last year, which was his career worst. The raw stats may suffer in the NL West, but a top 50 ranking isn’t crazy.
/looks
//sees #15
///yeah seems a little high
March 6th, 2013 at 3:13 PM
I think Harper is right. I’d say Strasburg could be higher. Braun would be my #1
March 6th, 2013 at 3:14 PM
also, no way Sandoval and Wright are better than Beltre. and I’m not convinced there’s that big a gap between him and Longoria.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:14 PM
I’ve also got a bet with Philly Mantis that Trout will have an OBP under .390 this year.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:16 PM
I do, however, love the Giancarlo ranking. I think he’s good for 45 hr and maybe (looks over Marlins lineup) 75 rbi, 60 runs or so.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:16 PM

March 6th, 2013 at 3:17 PM
What bothers me most about yesterday: had the name been Braun only, and not the three Yankees, EIC would have been all over using it to try to destroy Braun. When “news” becomes clearly “agenda-driven”, you lose credibility fast.
I have no problem with saying rumors are rumors, and only that dude can report them, because he knows his own credibility/sources. But yesterday’s post was a joke at the end of it.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:17 PM
PECOTA has Adrian Gonzalez as the #7 ranked position player for 2013. Expecting .286/.367/.486 with 28 HR and 98 RBI. They also expect his walk rate to bounce back (73 BB) with a 1.65 K/BB ratio in 2013.
Not saying he’s hitting those exact numbers but PECOTA is usually within range of what they end up putting up. Plus or minus a little here and there.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:18 PM
I think the Sox will be competitive this year. But I still think 3rd place is the best case scenario.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:19 PM
Go Cubs, Go! One guy and he’s 45th.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:19 PM
His arm is a ticking time bomb.
This will happen since he’s never been sub .380 in his career. His walks are going to jump big time this year .
And if I’m making a team for the WS:
C – Yadier Molina (best def. catcher in baseball, plus I buy the offensive jump)
1B – Votto
2B – Cano
3B – Cabrera
SS – Andrus
OF – Braun, Trout, Harper
DH – Stanton
SP – Verlander, Price, Hamels, Felix, Lee
CL – Kimbrell
March 6th, 2013 at 3:21 PM
All shall bend to the power of Paul Goldschmidt this year.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:21 PM
NYY/Bal/Bos is somewhat of a toss-up. No one can say one is a clear #3. It all depends if you buy Toronto.
I personally won’t be buying an offseason champion whose big improvement consisted of getting players from a shitty team, in any sport, until I see it. Tampa should still pitch, and manufacture runs, but I don’t see them running away with it, either. I expect Sox to be about 6-7 games back at the break of whoever is leading. It wouldn’t shock me if they are terrible and way back, but as a median I’d go with 7 back.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:21 PM
Rotation goes…
Verlander, Price, Strasburg, Hernandez and Darvish for me. Kimbrel is closing with Tyler Clippard setting him up.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:22 PM
I’m guessing PECOTA is expecting a weak year for position players then? that doesn’t look top 10…that kind of looks like John Olerud trading a bunch of walks for five or six more homers.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:23 PM
THIS is the year of Wieters. He’ll be like Ripken in ’91

In his one major league season? Or in the hitters’ paradise Pacific Coast League. I’m not 100% confident, but I also think you are really putting a lot of stock into a player with little track record, and now a lot of film for pitchers to adjust to.
Last year, in a nearly unrepeatable season, Trout was under .390 in 2 months and over in 3 months.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:26 PM
I’m buying the Oakland A’s before any of the afterthoughts in the AL East. The only team from the East with better than a 50% chance of reaching the ALDS is the Yankees. Everyone else is lower than 33%. The Cleveland Indians have almost the same odds to make the divisional round as any team not from NY in the AL East. The 2nd WC is brutal for that division.

/NTTAWWT
Well, it depends what you make of that whole Second Mile connection for Cal, Jr.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:27 PM
dammit, I just missed the under on the first Wieters mention, I thought it would for sure come before #40
March 6th, 2013 at 3:28 PM
In every level he played in since high school. And if I’m Scoscia I’m moving him to the 2 hole and letting him getting walked 90+ times and let him wreck havoc on the bases.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:29 PM
If my #3 is hitting .286/.367/.486 and walking every 1.65 times he strikes out I’m gonna go ahead and consider that a successful season. Joe Mauer is projected to win the batting title. Votto is the best on base candidate at just over .400.
Pitchers are catching up to hitters. Big time. Advanced scouting is working far more in favor of the guy throwing the ball than the one hitting it these days.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:29 PM
There’s just no fucking way if you were drafting a team for some new franchise this year, you’re taking Jeter 39 based on his on the field contributions. In front of Hamilton?
I know fantasy isn’t real life (well, I would argue in baseball it’s pretty close), but USA Today, ESPN, Yahoo and CNN all have him out of the top 100.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:30 PM
His arm is a ticking time bomb.
bc of delivery or overusage?
March 6th, 2013 at 3:31 PM
To be fair… Jeter does make Kevin Towers Grittiness 50 poll.

I think I’d let Halladay into my Top 50.

Change Dunkruarys to “Drunkruarys,” and 2013 shoots up to No. 1 for me.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:39 PM
Wil Myers, Garrit Cole, Dylan Bundy Oscar Tavarez (once the envitable Beltran DL stint occurs) or Anthony Rendon are the lead candidates.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:40 PM
They’ve morphed into one player?
March 6th, 2013 at 3:41 PM
I’m just not entirely sure I’d take him over any of the position players Lisk mentioned. or Longoria, Pedroia, Prince or Beltre.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:43 PM
Dylan Bundy isn’t listed because it wouldn’t be fair to compare these other worthless sorts to his majesty
March 6th, 2013 at 3:43 PM
refuse to buy that Jeter is top 50 at this stage in his career, especially coming off a leg injury
March 6th, 2013 at 3:44 PM
especially coming off a leg injury
Is that what they call gonorrhea these days?
March 6th, 2013 at 3:44 PM
he’s probably a top 50 middle infielder, for what it’s worth.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:45 PM
Don’t worry he’s going full measure on the PEDs this offseason.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:45 PM
No Meth-backs on the list? Glad that the 2011 flukes are being exposed.
Would love a divisional/league breakdown of the above. Also always been a huge of “Others Receiving Votes”. Lisk – who just missed the cut?

Intangibles, dude. Baseball usually hates those…until they love them.

If he had the same “surgery” on his ankle that Kobe had on his knee, he’ll be top 10.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:49 PM

I better be able to draft him this Saturday in my one league’s prospect draft. It’s either him or Myers at #2 and hoping to land Bundy or Cole at 4.

March 6th, 2013 at 3:52 PM
I get that. I was just asking is a closer as good/important as other positions to the point where they should be on a top-50 list.
March 6th, 2013 at 3:54 PM
Not sure if he would be top 50, but last year was awfully impressive. K’ing more than half the batters he faced. Insane.

I know it doesn’t mean anything, because it is spring training and against Spain, but Gerritt Cole struck out the first 6 batters he faced yesterday. Let’s go Bucs.

If you’re building a successful baseball team, your main priorities (or at least mine would be): #1-#3 starters, CF, SS, C, 2B, 3B, RF, #4 starter, LF, #5 starter, Closer, 1B

Gausman won’t even be up until June or July so he probably won’t finish higher than 2nd in ROY voting. I assume Bundy is going to win CYA, MVP, ROY, MOY, Gold Glove. I’m tempering my expectations but that’s a pretty good baseline

you forgot silver slugger. it will be tough as an AL pitcher, but you don’t want him suffering self-confidence issues due to low expectations

Agree with most of that although I like Machado for MVP and Wada for ROY when he comes up in late May.

The 79-83 2010 NY Mets had four players on this list(Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Dickey).
