The Jason McIntyre Show Podcast, Episode 2: Doug Gottlieb of CBS Sports

This week’s guest: Former Notre Dame/Oklahoma State point guard Doug Gottlieb, who left ESPN last summer for CBS Sports. Gottlieb’s quite the big deal at CBS – he’s got a TV show, a radio show, he’s a college basketball studio analyst and he’ll be announcing games in this month’s NCAA Tournament.
Also, he’s opinionated. Very.
This was a marathon podcast that went nearly 50 minutes. I won’t hit on all the topics discussed, but among them:
* Life in the ESPN bubble. Apparently, when living in Connecticut, the only thing Gottlieb paid attention to was ESPN. That’s no longer the case!
* “College basketball is in shambles” he says. DeLoss Dodds agrees.
* Life with Seth Davis on the CBS set.
* We talk about the NBA draft and taking young kids who aren’t ready, like Flynn, Wes Johnson, Russell Westbrook, etc.
* Doug Gottlieb defends Andy Katz against that bully Jim Boeheim.
* The first few obscenities are dropped.
* I note how Kansas fans are an angry bunch on twitter. Gottlieb disagrees, says they are among the smartest.
* Stories of playing pickup ball, including the time Scott Brooks (NBA player, NBA coach) dominated him.
* Gottlieb, either wearing down at the end, or frustrated with my line of questioning, gets a little testy and starts disrespecting my basketball game, which he hasn’t seen. “Playing on the court with me would be the highlight of your career, but the low point of my career,” is pretty much what he said.

Nice job jmac
/havent listened yet

that actually describes Fetch perfectly

Are these any good? It’s not really my thing, but if JMac gets to be a good interviewer I may listen to some selected ones.
It took Simmons over a year before he was any good. And now I’ve stopped listening because his guests aren’t that interesting to me. But in the middle, he had some really interesting ones.
My advice: beg Al Michaels to come on, press record, and then let him go at it. He’s got the best stories.

There are some dumbass KU fans. The whine and cheese set is insufferable.
Although, we know our hoops. It is all we have.
Jason – Are you basing this off Fetch tweets?
I’ll listen to this after Justified tonight. Odd that this was put up so late in the day.

Ha, Sparty. My thought exactly. Getting used to my new phone.

I don’t know the context, but this strikes me as factually wrong. Wes Johnson had 4 years of college. He had one more year of eligibility, but if he wasn’t ready, it’s more a lack of talent than being too young. He was 23 before his first NBA game.

Bwahahaha, nice.
Remember the Tony Stewart podcast? Or the the Dave Meltzer one after the Benoit murders happened? Painful

Two comments:
One—the podcasts themselves are good. Kudos.
Two—You need to either call this The Jason McIntyre Show, or The Jason McIntyre Podcast. The Jason McIntyre Show Podcast not only sounds stupid, but is redundant.

FWIW, I’d consider equalizing the levels of you and the interview subject. Not egregious, but you are noticeably louder than Doug. Didn’t listen to the first so I can’t comment on if this is a sustained imbalance.

Jay – the Jason McIntyre Show Podcast is perfect for its TBLness.

hardest thing in any kind of public speaking is to learn to drop the ‘uh’ between thoughts. learning to seque is tough.
March 5th, 2013 at 8:06 PM
I did notice that too.

Only about ~5 minutes in but I’d echo Flaccid Indigestion’s feedback. Doug is difficult to hear at times while your typing while he is talking comes through pretty clear.

50 minutes isn’t a marathon podcast. It’s normal.
/listens to loads of podcasts
March 5th, 2013 at 8:17 PM
fucking trey used to type during our podcasts. so loud
March 5th, 2013 at 8:27 PM
very long, but a solid piece on Goodell

Agree with A.P. on this. It may seem relatively long to you, but to those (at least me) who listen to podcasts regularly the average is typically 50-80 minutes so don’t feel the need to cut it short if you connect with a guest and are rolling. 2 hours is more of a marathon and is often cut into 2 episodes. If the content is really good, people will likely listen despite the extra length.
I will often split up listening to a single podcast for a couple of days riding to and from to work if it is good(15-20 minute drive to work each way).

I taught public speaking for one semester at a community college. One of the hardest bad traits to break is using “uh, um, err,” etc.. As the semester went on, i would penalize for doing that in their speeches.

Work was closed for several several days over the past couple of weeks due to Death Kill Snow I and II. I had to change my greeting on the work phone. All I had to do was say, “We are closed due to the snow. Check back in tomorrow to see if we are open.” I managed to drop 15, “uhs, ums, errs” into each message. I do public speaking once a week and don’t do that. I guess not having an audience in front of me neutered me.

Very well done. Current, topical guests thus far also.

Jmac did usat ask for these or something you always wanted to do?
March 5th, 2013 at 9:44 PM
I have been listening to old class lectures, as I’m preparing myself for going back to school. Three hour long mp3s of classes that were never meant for listening without visual aids etc. Painful.
March 5th, 2013 at 9:45 PM
I’m a very experienced public speaker, and usually very comfortable with my material, but I’m pretty sure I use “umm” and fidget a lot. I’d be terrible on a podcast, or on TV, for a long time.

Yeah, I’d be horrible. Out of my element. Some people get nervous speaking in front of people. I get messed up speaking into a microphone/phone in front of nobody.
March 5th, 2013 at 10:02 PM
I did college radio for 2 years and did all kinds of music groups and musicals in high school. I have no problem speaking/performing in front of people. Just dont care to do so much nowadays

Holy shit. I knew Tim was up to no good in Justified.
