LeBron Doesn’t Reject Magic Johnson’s $1 Million Dunk Offer, Which Means It’ll Be Media Fodder for 11 Months
LeBron James isn’t just the best player in the NBA – he’s the best athlete on the planet right now (sorry, Messi). The 6-foot-8, 260-pound freak is on his way to another MVP award, and likely another NBA Championship ring, Harlem Shaking and throwing down all sorts of nasty pregame dunks along the way. He’s got Olympic Gold. What’s left for him? The dunk contest, of course! Magic Johnson threw down a $1 million gauntlet Friday night, it was everywhere Saturday, and Sunday after torching the Knicks, LeBron got asked about it.
“Right now, I don’t know,” he said. “It doesn’t really stand anywhere. Right now, I’m so focused on what we’re doing as a team. Shoot, All-Star weekend is how far away?” he said of next February’s showcase in New Orleans. “So I’m really not thinking about right now. It was entertaining to hear him say that, though.”
He might as well have said, ‘yes, no, maybe so.’ This means the story will remain on a low simmer until someone sneakily asks LeBron, maybe four weeks from now during an unguarded moment “so, what about that dunk contest?” and LeBron says something like, ‘yeah, that’d be a lot of fun,’ and boom, it’s a story.
Hey LeBron, here’s a quick reminder from Woj: Your last TV event was a disaster.
How did it work out for James the last time that network sucked him into a made-for-TV event? He doesn’t need Magic Johnson’s money, nor ESPN’s, nor a dunk contest that’s far beneath him now. James doesn’t need to walk directly in Jordan’s footsteps to someday overtake him, except solely in the chase for championships. Everyone will forever try to make James take that bait, but these are different times for a star, and he can blaze a trail his own way.
Finally, there’s James floating through the most rarefied of air, suspended above the fray, unwilling to let himself get dragged down into the clown shows.
Can you imagine LeBron … losing the dunk contest? What if he lost to some benchwarmer like Jeremy Evans? If you’re making a table with pluses and minuses, LeBron has very little to gain here. LeBron in a dunk-off with some non-entity like Gerald Green is not going to be anything like Jordan-Dominique. Nobody will walk away from LeBron vs. Terrence Ross thinking, “wow, that was one for the ages!” Jordan-Nique involved two of the Top 15 players in the NBA having a dunk-off. LeBron vs. Russell Westbrook? Now you’re talking.
I’d love to see LeBron do it, but if I’m in his corner giving him advice, the dunk contest is a definite pass.

He would need Blake Griffin to do it too.

Barkley said it best when he said he owes it to the game. Not just him but others as well.
And let’s not kid ourselves, he would get 10′s just for showing up. The judges won’t let him lose to anyone other than maybe another superstar.

Yeah, maybe here. But not really.
It would be cool if he did it. It would not be a big deal if he lost it, even to a benchwarmer. People are overthinking this shit, big time.
I think the worst round in the history of the 3-point shootout was Michael Jordan’s “5″ in 1990. Was a nonstory then, and obviously is now.

LeBron should offer Magic and his dumb commentaries $1 Million to stay off TV. By the way, the only thing LeBron owns the league is to play hard, and win championships… I didn’t Barkley do the stupid contest in his days… It’s like everybody’s looking for something to bash LeBron for…

I’d tell him to do it, have fun, and don’t take himself to seriously. Seriously people, it’s the dunk contest, not the NBA finals. He’ll look good to all as long as he’s having fun with it and trying stuff up to his potential. Win or lose.

Barkley specialized in the two-handed power dunk. And that’s it.

Barkley was a nasty in game dunker. He had reverses as well, and some nice one-handed alley oops. I don’t think he would have done much in a dunk contest. Though by 1988 standards, he’s have looked okay.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:46 AM
if he would have been okay in 1988 he would win a modern dunk contest just by being the guy who makes a dunk on the first attempt,

Seems like it would be even worse for his image to do it now. I will do the contest if and only if I get an absurd amount of money to throw down a couple dunks.

He doesnt owe the NBA shit.
If anything, LeBron has generated eleventy-billion dollars of advertising and name recognition for the NBA and deserves to be paid eleventy-billion dollars.

Fair point – he should give it to charity.

Or he’s just an awesome dunker and everyone thinks it would be great entertainment to see him/durant/griffin compete against each other.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:51 AM
What if his signing on early was a selling point to the Westbrooks, Griffins and Durants of the league – the real stars?
If you want name players in the contest, somebody has to be first to commit, right? Why not James?
March 4th, 2013 at 11:53 AM
Remember that time the NBA Dunk Contest sucked when Dee Brown or Cedric Ceballos won the contest? How about JR Rider? Yeah, me neither.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:53 AM
All he’d have to do is sprint down court, jump from around the free throw line, cock the ball back (like that dunk at the end of yesterday’s game off the steal), and throw it down hard, and the the contest is his. Count me as one of the people that doesn’t get why he doesn’t just do it.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:54 AM
They’d have to do the finals differently than this fan voting stuff. You run the risk of some guy pulling off a 720 through the leg over a teammate from the foul line and losing to a Lebron windmill or something.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:54 AM
Dwayne Wade would need to be in before Lebron commits.
March 4th, 2013 at 12:00 PM
Lebron goes back to the Cavs, agrees to do the Slam Dunk contest, then blows out both knees on his first dunk attempt. I can see it now.
March 4th, 2013 at 12:05 PM
James White is a better dunker than Lebron and he had a bad dunk contest. Lebron being in it won’t magically fix the excessive amount of attempts that they allow and all the ancillary stuff they do to make it more of a spectacle than it needs to be.
March 4th, 2013 at 12:05 PM
Now this is definitely true.

Can’t we just get rid of All Star games all together? Sure it was nice 50 years ago when it was only time you get to see all the stars from all over the league play. But now, with all the league passes and the internet, it’s time to get rid of these silly exhibitions where nobody really tries.

I’d bet baseball’s and the NBA’s are huge money makers.

For what it’s worth, I usually enjoy the actual NBA game each year.
March 4th, 2013 at 12:24 PM
I’d prefer some type of 1-on-1 game (King of the Hill?) to the dunk contest.
March 4th, 2013 at 12:38 PM
Agreed, it has surpassed the MLB All-Star Game as my favorite.
March 4th, 2013 at 1:01 PM
7 more championships?
March 4th, 2013 at 1:17 PM
the Slam Dunk Contest is great at taking everything that makes slam dunks cool and replacing it with stupid contrived gimmicks.
