Ballin’: Kobe Dunked on Josh Smith, and the Lakers are .500
LA Lakers 99, Atlanta 98: The story here isn’t Kobe’s 34, or his dunk on Josh Smith, or Dwight Howard’s 15 rebounds, or Steve Nash’s 10 assists, or Antwan Jamison’s continued resurgence (10 points, eight rebounds). LA is finally back to .500 (30-30). The Lakers are only 2.5 games behind the Jazz and Rockets for the 8th seed, and three games back of Golden State for the 6th seed. When does Gasol return? Will the Jazz falter? I hope the Rockets don’t fade. This will definitely be the NBA’s storyline for the remainder of the regular season.
Memphis 108, Orlando 92: The torrid Grizzlies led by 25 at the half and have won nine of 10. They made more three-pointers (11) than free throws (9). Orlando can start thinking about the draft and Ben McLemore or Marcus Smart. Magic fans, do you want Otto Porter?
Sacramento 119, Charlotte 83: If you’re losing by 36 to the Kings, you’re awful. But then again, if you’ve lost 22 of 26, everyone knows that. I hope Michael Jordan wasn’t watching this bloodbath. John Salmons scored 19 in the third; so did Charlotte.
Houston 136, Dallas 103: The lottery-bound Mavericks permitted 57 percent shooting, 41 percent on three-pointers, and let Chandler Parsons (12-of-13, 6-of-7 three’s, 32 points) do his best Stephen Curry impression. Dalla was outscored 44-17 in the third.
San Antonio 114, Detroit 75: Tony Parker’s out a month (ankle) and in the first game without their point guard, the Spurs did OK, walloping the sad-sack Pistons by 39. Will the Cory Joseph/Patty Mills combo help the Spurs retain the top seed in the West?

Looks like the Knicks will have to settle for the second seed and catching up with the Heat in the Conference Finals.
March 4th, 2013 at 10:55 AM
Both will be fine. It’s the Warriors who will both falter and fade.

They will get not get past the Pacers for either the #2 seed, or in the playoffs.

I think it was JVG that reminded me that Shumpert got hurt the same day as DRose last year. Was Rose’s injury more severe?
March 4th, 2013 at 10:57 AM
I know the Wizards weren’t highlighted here, but Bradley Beal has been really, really good since John Wall’s return. If they can add a solid 3 (Porter?), they could have something.
March 4th, 2013 at 10:58 AM
kobe has been viscous around the rim lately.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:00 AM
good luck with that and JR Smith’s 3-14 3 pt shooting
March 4th, 2013 at 11:01 AM
I think the Bulls and Rose are being a bit more cautious than the Knicks and Shumpert. Even with being back, Shumpert is on an extreme minute count for right now, so I don’t think it’s a matter of right or wrong or tough and soft.

Joy to the world.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:02 AM
I assume you meant vicious unless you were describing Kobe as having a glutinous nature or consistency
March 4th, 2013 at 11:02 AM
kobe has been viscous around the rim lately.
He did an oil change, when to some premium Exxon to prevent thermal viscosity breakdown.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:03 AM
I think any mention of the lottery-bound Mavs should be followed by a mention of the playoff-bound Sixers.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:03 AM
never up never in, I guess.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:03 AM
Whatever happened to “my Warriors”?
March 4th, 2013 at 11:03 AM
Agreed. They will def be in playoff mix in EC next year.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:04 AM
Really need the Lakers to get that #8 seed.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:04 AM
That’s what happens when you high-five the oily Piven.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:06 AM
He was occupied with the bloodbath that new paternity suit will wreak upon his bank account.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:07 AM
Matchup wise, they’d beat the Pacers in no more than 6 games.

Keep dreaming.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:11 AM
Knicks in 5.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:11 AM
I’d take the Pacers in a hard fought six game series.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:18 AM
Um, the Knicks ain’t sniffing the Conference Finals
March 4th, 2013 at 11:19 AM
Wonder if they’re going to throw Melo a parade if he gets out of the first round this year.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:20 AM
This was excellent analysis. Thank you.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:21 AM
Considering Melo’s playoff history, lets let them make it out of the first round before we go discussing whether they could win 1 or 0 games against the Heat in the playoffs.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:22 AM
The Pacers can’t generate enough offense to beat the Knicks in a series. The biggest advantage they have over the Heat, size, isn’t an advantage over the Knicks.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:24 AM
I was more impressed with Kobe’s game winner than the dunk. He went up over 2 Hawk defenders and finished over Smith for the layup.
He also intensely hogged the ball in that 4th Q.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:25 AM
ha! that was funny and original
March 4th, 2013 at 11:26 AM
Its hard to see anyone dethroning the Heat this year. That team has impressive chemistry, combined with hands down the best player in the league in the prime of his career.
Lebron absolutely dominated the Knicks on both ends of the floor in the 4th yesterday, it was something else.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:30 AM
i wish the decision hadn’t ripped out my soul…i find myself nodding with karma now.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:32 AM
So true. He was fired up too, even more so than normal. I do not like the whole “Kobe iso for 10 straight plays” thing, but he was a wild man last night. Put Josh Smith in a clown suit.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:32 AM
Also, yes, the Heat are scary good.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:32 AM
i wish the decision hadn’t ripped out my soul
it makes everything he does seem fake and contrived to me.
but, there is no denying he is in another level right now. and i dont get how he is NEVER hurt.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:33 AM
I don’t need analysis to know that, Tim. But, thank you.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:39 AM
He had the most awkward fall I’ve seen on a court in some time last night – it looked like his knees were going to be torn apart, or his back went out or something….except he just walked it off a minute or 2 later.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:42 AM
The end is near.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:43 AM
In 3 games, the Knicks have beaten the Heat by 20 twice, and even in the game they lost by 6 in which they were supposedly all of a sudden going to receive the Heat’s “best effort” they had leads of 16 and 14 points. This talk about LeBron’s defense on Melo in the second half, I think shot to the ribs, and the trapping defense had more of an effect than any individual defender.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:47 AM
Grizzlies shot well without Z-Bo (sprained ankle against the Heat).
Orlando has a ton of potential. Tobias Harris was a good pickup, and I like Vucevic in the middle.
March 4th, 2013 at 11:54 AM
Whats your point?
Other than NY is more motivated to play the defending champs than the defending champs are to play a team they know can’t really compete with them. And that the regular season is meaningless. Well, except for Carmelo.
March 4th, 2013 at 12:03 PM
Is this what you picked up on from watching the 3 games or is that just a narrative you’re going to run with in order to hide your ability to engage on the subject? Let me know so I don’t waste my time.
March 4th, 2013 at 12:14 PM
I have no doubt that the series will/would be ugly, and I doubt that either team will break 100 in any single game (although the only team to break 100 in the season series is IND…to the tune of 125 just a cpl of weeks ago). But I would be a lot more concerned about the Knicks generating offense against the Pacers, than the converse.
March 4th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
Remember when the Cavs were 2-0 vs. the Spurs in the regular season in 2007?
Had a lot of relevance to that NBA Finals matchup.
March 4th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
Whats there to engage? Teams played some regular season games, one team won 2, the other 1. It doesnt mean anything.
And Melo disappearing in the playoffs isnt a narrative, that has become fact.
March 4th, 2013 at 12:28 PM
kobe has been viscous around the rim lately.
He did an oil change, when to some premium Exxon to prevent thermal viscosity breakdown.
Maybe a little deer antler spray for good measure?
March 4th, 2013 at 12:53 PM
ok then. you have nothing. you’re dismissed
March 4th, 2013 at 12:55 PM
Considering the narrative urge common to so many on this site, this should always apply.
March 4th, 2013 at 12:59 PM
back then, I would have posted on why the Cavs didn’t match up with the Spurs, just like today I’d post about why the Knicks are a bad matchup with the Heat. Nice try though.
March 4th, 2013 at 1:04 PM
Any series Indy plays in is going to be ugly, because that gives them the best opportunity to win. It’s what they tried to do against Miami last year. It looked more effective because the Heat were in the midst of adjusting to the loss of Bosh. But once Miami did adjust, the Pacers didn’t have the ability to respond in kind on the offensive end because of limitations. They’re in the same place, with or without Granger’s eventual return.
March 4th, 2013 at 1:05 PM
Oh no, Liquor! You have been dismissed! You must be devastated.
March 4th, 2013 at 1:19 PM
Don’t fret Liquor, he called one of my posts ‘assinine’ even though I personnally thought my comment was bang-on, 100% legit.
/holding a grudge
March 4th, 2013 at 1:38 PM
I’m going to echo what Jay V said. NY’s offense is ultimately only as good as Melo is on any given night and asking him to be great four times against an elite defensive team is a tall order.
March 4th, 2013 at 1:46 PM
what post was this?
March 4th, 2013 at 2:06 PM
I don’t think he has to be great against them for 4 games. The bigger concern for NY in regards to the Pacers is limiting the number of offensive rebounds they get.
March 4th, 2013 at 2:54 PM
Agree that the regular season results are meaningless.
March 4th, 2013 at 3:29 PM
The regular season is far from meaningless. You just have to know what to read into the results and how things would play out in a series with breaks between games and fewer players being used. Spend more time focusing on that, and less time trying to troll about first round exits, and you’ll have more compelling points.
