Family of Detroit Tigers Pitcher Brayan Villareal Survives Kidnapping Attempt in Venezuela
The family of Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Brayan Villareal was the target of an unsuccessful armed kidnapping attempt Friday night in Venezuela, the team confirmed today.
None of his family members were harmed and Villareal will remain in camp.
Kidnappings in Venezuela have become an increasing problem in recent years and have affected the baseball community on multiple occasions. The most high-profile instance came last year when Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos survived an armed abduction.
Villareal posted a 2.63 ERA in 50 appearances last season.
