There’s Something Mildly Humorous About a Cell Phone Ringing on the ESPN Set During This Golf Segment
A reader found this video on ESPN.com, and if you listen closely, at the :21 mark, a cell phone goes off in the studio. It’s one of the cheesy rings that if I hear in public, I’ll glance over at just because I’m curious why anyone would have that wretched ring. Most underrated ring on the iphone? Robot, of course.

and once our crack investigating team here at TBL figures out what it is, we will be sure to let you know.

i’ve got some beatbox thing going on. i stoppd at the first android choice i didn’t hate, so im sure i could do better

Should be allowed to cheer, scream and boo during a golfers swing. You can do it in other “sports.”
February 28th, 2013 at 11:45 AM
i agree…the difference is, you can tune out a constant stream of sound, but if it’s quiet and all the sudden someone yells ‘NOONAN,’ that’s WAY more distracting.
but i do agree. i dont mind when people talk in my backswing.

also, even in baseball, there’s some distance between the on-field action and the crowd. in golf?
February 28th, 2013 at 11:47 AM
I play music in the cart so I’m pretty much in agreement.
Tiger having a so-so day. Is the wind blowing?

milk steak that’s one of those deadhorse subjects
if it’s always noisy like in baseball, then it’s like white noise, not distracting even tho it takes major concentration to hit a pitched ball
if golf and tennis had traditionally been noisy, then it would be ok. it’s when a noise comes out of the silence that there’s a problem
can’t tell me it’s harder mentally to hot a golf shot than a fastball, and hitting a tennis ball is a distant third
February 28th, 2013 at 11:47 AM
not sure, but when it is at that course…whooboy, it’s an absolute bitch of a track.
February 28th, 2013 at 11:47 AM
probably someone calling espn to tell them they are the worst group of sucks that ever sucked.
February 28th, 2013 at 11:48 AM
goddamit, wasted time and typing
February 28th, 2013 at 11:49 AM
i dunno…when youre hitting a moving target, you’re reacting instinctively. when youre hitting a stationary target, you bring “time” into the thinking equation, which aint good.
im not saying one’s harder than the other, but i think hitting a golf ball requires more conscious thought since you have to make the ball move, rather than reacting to it.
February 28th, 2013 at 11:49 AM
Hilarious
February 28th, 2013 at 11:50 AM
that said…anyone can master a golf swing with time, but not everyone can hit a fastball, even if they practiced 8 hours a day for a decade.

Tiger having a so-so day. Is the wind blowing?
No. But I heard Vonn never is so I’m sure he’s off his game.
February 28th, 2013 at 11:52 AM
I think the problem is more when there’s a noise and the golfer acts like somebody shot his mother. Deal with it, asshole…
February 28th, 2013 at 11:52 AM
i understand the diff spence. good point. plus there are ways to hit it for different spins and accounting for wind, etc.
February 28th, 2013 at 11:53 AM
I’ve had to swing at high 90′s heat. Hitting a baseball with success is much, much more difficult.
February 28th, 2013 at 11:54 AM
you know, i think it’s funny that people compare golf to baseball and say that “oh the ball isn’t moving, how hard can it be?” but don’t compare pitchers with quarterbacks. they’re both throwing, but a pitcher doesnt have to worry about getting sacked…so why arent pitchers derided as “it doesnt take any athleticism?”
/takes athleticism to hit a 275+-yard drive
//if you disagree, you haven’t hit one
February 28th, 2013 at 11:54 AM
this i agree with…youll never see me defend golfer douchebaggery.
February 28th, 2013 at 11:55 AM
that wasnt the debate tho…the question was which was harder MENTALLY. with baseball, you don’t have time to think cuz the ball’s past you. in golf, your brain usually gets in the way when you hit bad shots.
February 28th, 2013 at 11:57 AM
For the love of god you fucking retards, the noise issue in tennis is not about concentration it’s about the fact that players listen to how the ball comes off the opponents’ racket to judge the speed and placement of the shot.
February 28th, 2013 at 11:58 AM
I think knuckleballers are, no?
February 28th, 2013 at 11:58 AM
probably someone calling espn to tell them they are the worst group of sucks that ever sucked.
That someone needs to call Adidas and repeat the message.
February 28th, 2013 at 11:59 AM
Mentally though, in baseball, there is still a high degree of doubt involved. Whether or not you can succeed, whether or not the pitcher is going to throw a baseball, whether or not you’re gonna get beaned in the face and die, and I think those aspects put it above the purely reactionary skillset. Baseball players go into long slumps just like golfers and it’s due to the metal aspects of the game, not physical.
Having said that, once you overcome the doubt, I agree, it’s much easier for those mental issues to creep back in in golf.
February 28th, 2013 at 12:03 PM
with baseball, you don’t have time to think cuz the ball’s past you.
yeah but when you don’t know what kind of pitch is coming and where, that raises the ante. a 94mph fb followed by an 86mph deuce or vice versa might make you weep
February 28th, 2013 at 12:03 PM
* meant curve ball instead of baseball
February 28th, 2013 at 12:03 PM
but golfers don’t face these exact same internal questions?
im speaking purely in terms of mechanics…you really dont have time to think “keep your backswing flat, hold your wrist angle, fire your hips while creating tension between your torso, etc.” all within half a second. if youre thinking that in baseball, you dont even have a chance to MAKE a swing.
February 28th, 2013 at 12:04 PM
So…should people like Sharapova and Azarenka be prohibited from shrieking when they hit?
I’m a tennis player, but would love to see crowd noise allowed in the sport. Davis Cup matches, with the crowd really into it, are much more fun to watch.
February 28th, 2013 at 12:04 PM
For the love of god you fucking retards, the noise issue in tennis is not about concentration it’s about the fact that players listen to how the ball comes off the opponents’ racket to judge the speed and placement of the shot.
like the crack of the bat helps OF get a break on the ball?
February 28th, 2013 at 12:05 PM
There are a lot of players who think so, Navratalova thinks so and always complained about it. It’s straight up cheating, it’s done to mask the shot.
February 28th, 2013 at 12:06 PM
Exactly. If you’re having swing doubts, it’s still that much more difficult. In golf, you can fight a swing and sometimes get by on pure technology. I’ve made terrible swings and my driver still produces distance and straightness. Not so much in baseball.
It’s a pretty pointless argument since both are so fucking hard to do = the ultimate point.
February 28th, 2013 at 12:09 PM
Agree it needs to be eliminated if crowd noise is not permitted.
February 28th, 2013 at 12:14 PM
Speaking of golf, small to moderate chance I’m in Cleveland for a wedding this summer.
February 28th, 2013 at 12:37 PM
Why do people still use ringtones? Are you so fat that you can’t feel vibrate through your pocket?
February 28th, 2013 at 12:40 PM
Are you so fat that you can’t feel vibrate through your pocket?
