North Carolina Forced to Prove Classes Exist to Keep Accreditation After Athlete Academic Scandal
North Carolina’s football and basketball programs won’t be held accountable competitively for making up classes to keep athletes eligible competition. But the school itself faces the possibility of serious academic sanctions. The News & Observer is reporting the scandal has threatened UNC’s accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Colleges.
UNC has been forced to enact draconian measures to prove it is an actual school. Administrators have been forced to scurry around the campus in person, ensuring that listed classes are in fact taking place. Professors have been forced to turn in syllabi. There have even been proposals to bring photographers around campus to supplement the documentation.
It’s fortunate North Carolina players were merely pretending to be students, not doing something nefarious like accepting a free dinner. Really shocking the NCAA, with a vested interest in a billion-dollar basketball tournament, saw nothing wrong with perhaps the nation’s biggest basketball program.

This is pretty much what a school does any time its accreditation is up for renewal.
February 28th, 2013 at 12:37 PM
So it is bad to accept free food, but okay to pretend to be a student. Doesn’t that kind of defeat the whole student-athlete notion?

I didn’t read it by I bet Ty turned this into a pay the players post.

Nope, didn’t quite get that far. He alluded to it with the line that GG highlighted, but that’s about it.
February 28th, 2013 at 12:44 PM
That hasn’t really been a thing for a while now in the big money sports…the only people you hear trumpet that anymore are either the NCAA or the superfans who don’t think players should get extra compensation
February 28th, 2013 at 12:45 PM
I see nothing wrong with this.

Will they even bother paying their $65 renewal for this once they’re in the B1G?
February 28th, 2013 at 12:49 PM
Is it really a scholarship if the classes they are attending don’t exist?
February 28th, 2013 at 12:49 PM
Well this thread was won in record time.

In light of Manziel taking all online courses, does any of this even matter going forward? Isn’t it simple just to have people take your online courses for you?
Not sure how the NCAA can prevent stuff like that, other than disallowing those classes for athletes, which wouldn’t seem fair.

Why wouldn’t it be fair? I question the validity of all online courses, regardless of who takes them.

February 28th, 2013 at 1:05 PM
I’m sure there will be hollering if they’re allowed for the general student body but not for the athletes. I agree with you on their validity, but I’m sure they’re a money saver for the universities. I honestly wasn’t aware that they were in great use at “real” universities before the Manziel story.

Right. My point was more of why A&M was offering them in the first place. I think that’s the issue.
My wife met a woman about a year go with a PhD in Special Education who had to move to Saudi Arabia to find a job. The reason? Her PhD was from Capella and no one here thought much of that being on her resume.

If you think that’s snooty then I don’t know what to tell you. But I’ll happily stand on my two degrees earned through classroom work over someone who earned theirs at a for-profit and/or online program.

I’d visit the UAE, but I have no desire to ever step foot in Saudi Arabia. You could not pay me enough money to go there. I like scotch and naked women waaaay too much to live in a place like that.

I don’t understand what a snooty belt is. When you put it on does it think it’s too good for the pants it is holding up?

It’s separate issues. I am 100% against for-profit schools. They suck up federal financial aid at a far higher rate, turn a profit because of it, and have among the lowest graduation rates of any institutions in the country. For-profit institutions receive 12.5% of the federal loan volume in a given year, but account for 48% of all defaults. Does that sound to you like they are preparing people well?
Online courses are a different story. In the right atmosphere online courses are great resources, especially for distance education. But they require more personal accountability from the students and the instructor than normal classes in a brick and mortar setting do. The quality of online classes is steadily increasing and degrees largely earned online through traditional non-profit institutions will be on par with a degree earned through physical attendance at a traditional university in the very near future.
February 28th, 2013 at 1:34 PM
See, this makes you sound very idiotic on the subject. College athletes get free meals all the time. If not counting the ones included in their scholarship, they can get pre or post game meals, meals associated with practice, any staff member can provide them with a meal on an occasional basis, and even a booster can provide a meal on-campus or in their home if they want.
But keep up the starving narrative, it helps the pay the playoffs push.

That’s what happens when you care more about your sports teams than the education your provide. They don’t even care about the perceived perception, at least not enough to admit they kept football and basketball players in school by giving them grades to stay there, even giving good grades to unattended courses. The Tarpit is a farce.
