Alex Smith Will Be the 6th QB to Play for the 49ers and Chiefs. Here’s a Ranking of All Six.
Alex Smith is just the latest QB to make the voyage from San Francisco to Kansas City. Since 1988, 39% of the passing yards for the Kansas City franchise have come from quarterbacks who played in San Francisco, a number that should cross 40% next season. In the nineties, Kansas City went to the San Francisco well three consecutive times, trading for Joe Montana then signing both Steve Bono and Elvis Grbac. In honor of the Alex Smith trade, these are the best QBs to play for both the Chiefs and 49ers.
6. Bob Gagliano. Before Kansas City got San Francisco products, it went the other way. Gagliano was a 12th round pick of the Chiefs and threw 1 pass as a Chief. Years later, he got re-introduced to the league as a replacement player for San Francisco, before moving on and becoming a Detroit legend.
5. Steve Bono. He came to Kansas City as a career backup, and is a legend because he is as fast as RG III, at least that’s what the record book says.
4. Elvis Grbac. True story: the offseason Grbac was traded, he was at a local mall in a sports shop signing autographs. Nobody was there, so myself and some buddies talked to him, bought a football and had him sign it. He didn’t seem like he wanted us to leave, since it was dead. We then went in the parking lot and played catch and scuffed the football up.
3. Alex Smith. Alex gets ahead of Grbac here since he started and had a better year than Grbac by the time he arrived. I’m not willing to put him ahead of the next guy, even though he was a journeyman until he arrived in Kansas City.
2. Steve DeBerg. DeBerg actually started in San Francisco until being replaced by Joe Montana, then bounced to Denver and Tampa Bay. He will forever be a legend for playing in a playoff game with the largest thumb cast you will ever see.
1. Joe Montana. The last quarterback to win a playoff game in Kansas City, Joe Cool was definitely worth it, from the Monday Night win in Denver to the win at Houston in the playoffs.

The Denver/KC game is the deal.
John Elway is very underrated. Yes, UNDERrated.
Give me Montana/Elway over Brady/Manning all fucking day long.

Joe Montana, going from Bill Walsh’s West Coast system, to Marty Schottenheimer’s West Coast system.
Good call.

Steve Deberg vs. Todd Marinovich will forever be one of the weirdest QB playoff matchups.

I love it when you bring up names of obscure pros like Gagliano. Cool memories. Everybody ain’t gonna be a HoF’er.

Steve DeBerg backing up Chris Chandler in ’98 had to be the oldest QB combo in league history…looking back that Falcons season makes little sense, but at least they did the lord’s work in keeping the Vikings from realizing glory

It was amazing that Deberg came back to be Chris Chandler’s backup. Falcons probably would have won that super bowl had Deberg started.

What a great game. Classic Montana. He was really good at winning games and not throwing picks. The human horse was quite the opposite.

he was no Jeff Komlo.

You win. I’m giggling. One of the all-time names in NFL history. Former Falcon, number 11, IIRC.
