Deion Sanders Calls Tyrann Mathieu a “Leader,” Appears Undaunted by the Drug Issues, Rehab Stint
Tyrann Mathieu – nee Honey Badger – is having a strong day at the Combine. His draft stock, which cratered after he was kicked off the LSU football team and entered rehab, is starting to rise again. After Mathieu ran a blazing fast 4.43 40 (unofficially), Deion Sanders gushed about the cornerback with the blonde mohawk who lifted 225 pounds just four times Monday. He’s got swag! So what if, just a couple months after rehab, he was arrested for “simple” drug possession?
There’s no brake-pumping with Deion. Swag! If he were a GM, you get the impression he’d draft Mathieu in the first round, maybe Top 10. While everyone likes Mathieu as a special teams playmaker and nickel cornerback, why would anyone take a first round flier on him? I’m thinking 3rd round, maybe late 2nd for a team that has a million draft picks (like San Francisco).

people still say swag?
February 26th, 2013 at 11:01 AM
That statement is so much funnier with your avatar

No.

more of a legend than a leader, imo.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:03 AM
Is that Leon Sandcastle?!
February 26th, 2013 at 11:03 AM
HOP! Deion would be like Millen, except with CBs.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:04 AM
Dont mock me GG
February 26th, 2013 at 11:06 AM
nickle
ha ha
February 26th, 2013 at 11:06 AM
if you believe what deion has to say, then you are the loser.

i think mathieu’s got a spot as a slot corner (not nickel corner…that makes it sound like he’s a backup, doesnt define the role he’d actually be good at). as long as he’s not covering giants outside the hashes, he can be a functional player, id think.

One of the douchiest slang terms ever. It sounds dorky as hell when black guys say it, and when white dudes use it, it’s borderline criminal.

What about YOLO? That has to be the worst
February 26th, 2013 at 11:10 AM
Deion Sanders gushed about the cornerback
that’s not really what that little video indicates. And nobody anywhere said anything about drafting this kid in the first round.
He doesn’t have to start watching the draft until Saturday, if he wants to see his name.

My favorite YOLO related moment.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:11 AM
dirt…you watched anything regarding chance warmack? i know he’s a guard, but id spend a top 10 pick on him. he’s an absolute monster.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:12 AM
No mocking intended. Charlie is awesome.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:12 AM
obligatory.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:17 AM
You only YOLO once.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:19 AM
I thought we agreed he was going the Lions.

everybody loves that guy. I heard he benches 6 bills already, but he didn’t press at the combine.
No way he makes it to the 18th pick. Everybody needs one of those.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:21 AM
The universe implodes upon itself…hahahahaha.
I’m sick of Sanders trying to insert himself into the lives of assorted players like he’s some kind of guru. Live your life, skippy.
I think even if Mathieu is undrafted, with some planning he could end up as a useful part on many teams. SD needs playmakers, for example. You just can’t start him at CB every week.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:21 AM
He can practice being a “leader” with Fairley and LeShoure.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:23 AM
this play (0:27) awesome. it’s like he was put on this earth to play guard.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:25 AM
Shockingly this isn’t even the top 50 of the dumbest things Deion Sanders has said.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:26 AM
Milliner ran a sub 4.4 today. Still don’t think I’d take him in the top 10. Way too many teams went after him last year.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:27 AM

he’s the best. and if he’s there at 18, Dallas still won’t take him, because they’re idiots.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:28 AM
agreed…while he made some great plays against michigan, most of them were great recoveries against a WR that was a QB a year earlier. awesome job making the play, but how do you get beat by a converted QB with all of a month playing WR? top 10? cmon naw.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:28 AM
I was never impressed with him as a corner, but he was a playmaker like whoa for LSU. I think he’ll stick in the league provided he doesn’t fuck up off of the field (PR, ST, 4th corner kind of guy).
February 26th, 2013 at 11:28 AM

What if he went to Arkansas instead of Alabama.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:30 AM
They’d trade up for him and Jerry would personally announce the pick.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:30 AM
My comment still stands
February 26th, 2013 at 11:32 AM
What if he went to Arkansas instead of Alabama.
they picked Felix Jones over Chris F-ing Johnson. I hate that Arkansas connection.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:46 AM
He made plays in college. In the right setup, he can make plays in the pros.
Unfortunately for him, most of those plays, especially in the beginning, are likely to be on special teams.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:47 AM
I think it’s hilarious that a site where people have killed idiotic terms like “Duckworth’d” and No Coop’d would bag on terms like YOLO and swag being overused.

Leader: something that’s never been said about Deion Sanders
February 26th, 2013 at 11:49 AM
my head, it is hung in shame, da.

I think we use said terms with an awareness that people who use terms like YOLO and swag lack.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:52 AM
There’s a reason Deion isn’t an NFL GM. He’s fabulous in TV commercials, but he’s a buffoon of an announcer.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:52 AM
Thanks for ruining the party, Darrell
February 26th, 2013 at 11:53 AM
i think the reason has more to do with the fact he probably makes more on TV than he would as a GM. im gettin to old for this shit, rog.
February 26th, 2013 at 11:57 AM
lol!!!! yeah, ok. That’s how all hip people think.

I’ve often wondered why Deion, with his flamboyant personality, didn’t choose the U and went to Fl St. Instead. this was miami’s heyday. Anyone hear or read anything about that?
