Sacramento State-UC Riverside Baseball Brawl Featured Some Haymakers [Video]
Things got testy in yesterday’s Sacramento State-UC Riverside game after a rundown between second and third base. Now a bunch of players find themselves in a pickle.
Andrew Ayers, the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year as a junior last season, and Eddie Young and Drake Zarate of UC Riverside were ejected from the game after the brouhaha in the third inning of Sac State’s 2-1 loss. Under NCAA rules, players ejected for fighting are suspended for four games.
Young was caught in a rundown between second and third base and was tagged out by Ayers. Based on video on KCRA Channel, it appears Ayers pushed Young out of his way, and Young retaliated with two punches, the first one hitting Ayers in the jaw.
Hornets third baseman Will Soto Jr. then tackled Young, and players from both benches streamed onto the field. It’s unclear what role Zarate played in the confrontation.
Young’s decision to throw a couple of punches to the face after being shoved slightly is an impressive overreaction. Michael Barrett would be extremely proud.

The first punch didn’t seem to phase the guy. Yikes.

Nothing but street thugs why I don’t watch baseball anymore.

That punch isn’t wise, but the shove was obnoxious and, more importantly, I think Ayers was gabbing at Young when he turned around. I think the talking got him hit. And that’ll happen sometimes when you mouth off—not that he cared, as Nittany pointed out. Nice tackle by Soto, and good call not ejecting him.

Video for iPod people here
Wow, nittany was right, that dude didn’t e en flinch. Obviously something was said by the runner, why would the 2nd basement react that way, dunno. The bigger message here is get rid of those focking metal bats. I hate the sound and the possible damage from a line drive.

caribou, a well-known professor (Rothwell) from the university where you work taught a grad school class of mine in Rochester, NY. Brilliant man, but would go off on boring tangents. One time I just got up and went home for the night because he was just rambling about crap that was irrelevant to the class.

AP , was it William Rothwell? I don’t who he is, but I had professors like that in class sometimes. You live in Rochester? I had a friend that used to work in our IT dept who was from Rochester and went to Clarkson. He moved from state college and nt to work at VaTech about 8 yrs ago.

The baserunner deserves to get his ass beat for trying to take third on a ball hit in front of him.

That friend of mine who was from Rochester was a big Bills fan and we used to bet both games the Phins and bills played. Missed talking trash when those teams played.

Good point Groin. I didn’t play baseball as a kid, but my son plays and I’m around guys who really know the game. I’ve come to appreciate the subtle things about the game.
/still hate those fockin metal bats though
