Alfonzo Dennard of the Patriots Found Guilty of Assaulting Police Officer, Facing Six Years in Jail
Alfonzo Dennard, a talented cornerback at Nebraska, did something immensely stupid days before the 2012 NFL Draft: He slugged a cop.
Projected as a 2nd/3rd round pick, his stock plummeted, and Bill “Reclamation Project” Belichick took a gamble on Dennard in the 7th round.
Dennard had a solid year. But the Patriots’ secondary was putrid, so they went out and traded for Tampa’s problem child, Aqib Talib. Patriots fans may think Wes Welker is the team’s primary offseason concern, but I’d say it’s the secondary.
Especially with Dennard being found guilty today of assaulting that cop. He’s looking at potentially six years in prison:
As bars were letting out, Dennard first had an altercation with college student Ben Samani, which officer Ben Kopsa saw.
Kopsa approached Dennard, and during their interaction is when Dennard was accused of hitting the officer. A 17-second video taken by an onlooker was evidence in the case; prosecutors said it was clear on the video that Dennard was the aggressor and punched Kopsa. The defense argued that it was impossible to tell from the video whether Dennard had hit the officer.
It’s a decent draft for cornerbacks, but not a deep one. But yup, from here on out, I’ll be slotting a cornerback to the Patriots in my mock drafts. [Globe]

Still think the Lions should have drafted him in the 6th round.
/Vontaze in the 7th

So, I’m guessing the Pats are franchising Talib.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:20 PM
Damn. This dude was really good at NEB. Sucks to see this happen. Gotta think he’ll get some jail time, though I can’t imagine he gets anywhere close to 6 years for this.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:21 PM
I’m guessing that’s pretty expensive.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:22 PM
Has anyone ever curled (is that even the right way of saying the past tense verb of curling?)?
February 20th, 2013 at 1:23 PM
10 mill for Talib, not sure that’s the best move, they only have like 18 total and still have to sign that one OL too, no?
February 20th, 2013 at 1:23 PM
Do you even lift bro?
February 20th, 2013 at 1:23 PM
Has anyone ever curled (is that even the right way of saying the past tense verb of curling?)?
Yes about 20 years ago.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:24 PM
Does a guy in jail still count against your cap or do they let you out of those?
February 20th, 2013 at 1:24 PM
Is it fun? I’m going to be in Salt Lake City and that’s one of the things I’m going to be doing.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:25 PM
Pretty sure it still counts, but he can’t be making that much coin.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:25 PM
This guy was a damn good CB in college. Must have hung around Peilini too much if he became a thug off the field.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:25 PM

I am amazed that this subject has not been broached before.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:25 PM
Draftniks – what do you think of the Alabama CB Milner? If you were projecting him on talent, not team need, where’s he rank in prosoects?
I’m kind of worried the bama CB are helped a bit by Crimson Tide front 7 and aren’t really tested in college. Milner could be there for CLE but I just dont think he warrants a #6 pick.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:26 PM
Vollmer?
February 20th, 2013 at 1:26 PM
I think its around $10 mil.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:27 PM
10-15 range.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:28 PM
I always liked him more than Amukamara who always got more hype.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:28 PM
Ahh Scripty, too quick for me.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:28 PM
Fuck yeah, super fun. Trick is get quite a few beers in and you should aim very, very lightly. The rocks will carry the distance. Also wear some basketball shorts under your pants as you will probably fall down at some point usually while sweeping.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:29 PM
Is it fun? I’m going to be in Salt Lake City and that’s one of the things I’m going to be doing.
Sure. But it’s more of a drinking pastime so in SLC that might be dull. Normally you bring your 6-pack and leave it there on the corner of the ice. The ice is a bit pebbled but you can still fall on your ass.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:29 PM
Not a draftnik, but I don’t think he’s as good as people are saying. Teams went after Milliner way more than they ever did Claiborne (Dallas via LSU), yet people are saying Milliner could go top-10.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:31 PM
And they need to sign Welker too. I wonder how they will get all that worked out. No way Welker is going elsewhere right? He has to realize that offense and Brady is what makes him so good.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:31 PM
Thanks for the advice. We’re going with a bunch of drinkers, but it’ll also be a company function, so alcohol won’t be flowing at that time. Curling always reminded me a shuffle board for giants. I’m pretty excited for it.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:32 PM
You would think, but if some team offers 40% more or something like that, at his age that would be hard to turn down.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:33 PM
Go BILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLS!
/pours one out for JPQ
February 20th, 2013 at 1:34 PM
If Welker was gonna stay in NE it would have been done by now. Not sure why he or his agent would get in a staredown with the Hoodie over a free agency deal for a guy in his 30′s.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:35 PM
I could see the Rams signing Welker.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:36 PM
I could see the Rams signing Welker.
Don’t they have a younger version of him, Amendola, under contract still?
February 20th, 2013 at 1:36 PM
Typical Cornhusker. If he’d been smart he would have gotten this out of his system while he was still on Nebraska’s team, it would have gotten swept under the rug and he would have only missed like a quarter or a half of one game.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:39 PM
A sneaky Belichick move might be trading for Harvin as a young replacement for Welker. He could fill Welker’s shoes in that offense.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:40 PM
He could fill Welker’s shoes in that offense.
idk, harvin doesn’t seem as tough, mentally or physically
February 20th, 2013 at 1:41 PM
Dennard really ended his college career with a bang. Booted from his bowl game then punched a cop. Brilliant.
Prince was a great cover guy, Dennard is much more physical. I thought Dennard had the better skill set to be a safer bet in the pros.
/Giant fan not so patiently waiting for Prince…
February 20th, 2013 at 1:41 PM
would love him on the Lions.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:42 PM
Mercy, Percy! thinks he’s worth Calvin Johnson money, though.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:42 PM
Fuck is Harvin going to contribute with a skull about as useful as Gary Johnson’s?
February 20th, 2013 at 1:42 PM
Not at 5.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:44 PM
idk, harvin doesn’t seem as tough, mentally or physically
Good point. One thing with Welker is you can count on him to play 16.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:46 PM

I am amazed that this subject has not been broached before.
If he was in jail, you’d have to cut him, because you couldn’t afford to hold the roster spot for a jailed guy.
And if you cut him, the only way he could count against your cap is a cap hit on a pro-rated signing bonus or other bonus that you amortized across the length of his contract.
This guy wouldn’t obviously, because he probably didn’t even get a bonus, or if he did, he got an almost nothing bonus, being a 7th rounder. ( i looked it up, he’s making more than the minimum every year, but not much more. And he got 60K as a signing bonus).
And on that note, he’s already been punished. This dumb shit cost him at least a million dollars over the first four years of his career.
He probably shouldn’t be suspended further. Jailed, maybe, but that’s not my call.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:46 PM
don’t know enough about pats to know if career high is being sarcastic. maybe welker’s been hurt a lot. i should have been more clear: in that role, the wr gets hit a lot. would a diva like harvin want that?
February 20th, 2013 at 1:47 PM
Not with the fifth pick.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:47 PM
Don’t they have a younger version of him, Amendola, under contract still?
Amendola is a free agent, too. An oft injured, pissant sized free agent.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:47 PM
Welker has been beaten up and is on the downslope of his career. Only idiot “Patriot fans” think he is a priority this offseason, despite what the fearless leader thinks. Talib was a great addition……until he got hurt (twice).
February 20th, 2013 at 1:48 PM
Amendola is a free agent, too
like alex smith?

Cleet you’re a Pats fan correct? You think they’ll be fine without Welker next year? The guy catches what, 120 passes a yr?
February 20th, 2013 at 1:55 PM
You think they’ll be fine without Welker next year? The guy catches what, 120 passes a yr?
i’ll preface this by typing ‘not cleet’….but so what if he has that many? where has it got them? plus i believe there was one pretty important drop two SBs ago. he might trade his 120 for that 1
/or was it a bad brady pass?
February 20th, 2013 at 1:55 PM
They may suffer a little bit, but for what he wants to get paid it’s not worth it. The Pats need a receiver who can catch the ball down the field more than anything offensively. My biggest memories the last two seasons of Welker in the playoffs was dropping the pass in the SB and dropping a downfield pass in the AFCCG and getting beat all to hell.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:56 PM
Good point.
/You can nawt let Welkahhhh wawk, he’s a fawckin superstah
February 20th, 2013 at 2:05 PM
See I don’t know that there offense is set up that way. Lloyd can catch the ball down the field. It just seems Lloyd, and others in his position in past years since Moss are at best the 3rd option.
February 20th, 2013 at 2:08 PM
Why do I feel this question will be applied to Honey Badger about a year from now?
February 20th, 2013 at 2:09 PM
Belicheck lost that Arizona game at home so he could win more money on all the survival pools. That game ruined everybody.
February 20th, 2013 at 2:12 PM
If Julian Edelman were healthy, wouldn’t he be an acceptable fill-in for Welker? He’s kind of an ancillary piece to their offensive success – as long as they have Brady, the strong o-line and can keep the tight ends relatively healthy, the offense will be successful.
Getting someone who can actually make a play down the field seems to be more of a need – and harder one to find – than resigning Welker.
February 20th, 2013 at 2:14 PM
I think the problem here is that Lloyd just isn’t very good.
February 20th, 2013 at 2:16 PM
If Julian Edelman were healthy, wouldn’t he be an acceptable fill-in for Welker?
No. Welker’s a really good receiver and Edelman is an anciallary piece. It’s just a cap situation reaility. I dont think NE dislikes Welker. NE hit gold when they signed him and I think people foolishly think anybody can come in off the street and put up Welker’s #’s. It’ll be really intersting to see what NE does to offset this next year.
February 20th, 2013 at 2:16 PM

He was pretty darn good in Denver when Orton would throw it downfield to him.
February 20th, 2013 at 2:21 PM
Didn’t they attempt to find this out the first game of last season when they started Edelman instead of Welker?
February 20th, 2013 at 2:31 PM
It’s not set up that way but you still have to stretch the field, especially when Gronk is out, to make the offense work. They didn’t have it and Baltimore knew it and hence they were able to stop them.
Lloyd was not consistent at all last year and IMO is not a viable downfield option despite the magic that he and neckbeard had in Denver.
February 20th, 2013 at 2:33 PM
Has anyone ever seen Dennard and Charlie Sheen’s Dopeman in the same room?
February 20th, 2013 at 2:37 PM
If only Charlie Sheen’s Dopeman had video of his confrontation he would have been spared jailtime when it showed the undercover officer had indeed stuck first.
February 20th, 2013 at 3:24 PM
I get you need page clicks, but at least add the “up to” in the title. 180 days is average for this offense, I’ve heard. First-timer, clean since then. Guessing he’s in games for Pats this season.
February 20th, 2013 at 3:25 PM
He needs to be thrown open. Which sometimes Brady can do very very well. It’d be nice to find a guy that can get himself open downfield, and take some pressure off.
February 20th, 2013 at 3:27 PM
Also… no way they franchise Talib, IMO. And I don’t think they franchise Vollmer (injury prone, with possible replacements already on the team) or Welker (just too big a cap hit).
February 20th, 2013 at 3:29 PM
You say that. Are you a Patriots fan?
Also… that link basically downplays them keeping Welker. Just in case you wanted to feign some consistency.
