Johnny Manziel is Taking All Online Classes at Texas A&M Because People Mob Him in Class on Campus

Johnny Manziel is dating a model, has been on the Tonight Show and Letterman, won the Heisman, and is the biggest star in college football. I’d argue after just one magical season (5,116 total yards, 47 touchdowns), Manziel is the biggest athlete in Texas A&M sports history. He certainly is the biggest cash cow the school has ever had.
Of course, this means he can’t go to class anymore.

Manziel showed up for an English class in College Station to start the Spring semester and it caused a “stir,” he told the Star Telegram. So now, he’s taking all of his classes online:
For now, Manziel is focused on preparing for spring football drills, which open March 2, and an academic schedule that includes four online classes in sports management that do not require him to be on campus every day. Manziel, 20, said he switched to the all-online approach after his presence caused a stir in an English class when the spring semester began.
“I went one day, and it kind of turned into a little more of a big deal than I thought,” said Manziel, who swapped the English class for another online offering in sports management.
Because of the online classes, Manziel has been able to travel to a variety of events — from the Super Bowl, to Mardi Gras, to NBA All-Star Weekend — in recent weeks that have caused some fans to question his off-season priorities. But Manziel said he clears every trip with the A&M compliance office and huddled recently with his parents, coach Kevin Sumlin and athletic director Eric Hyman to “make sure we were on the same terms” about his spring semester plans.
Sweet life. What are his Spring Break plans, or will Spring Football hamper those?
Given his level of fame, it’s difficult to imagine Manziel sticking around College Station beyond next year. Given all the weapons the Aggies will have on offense next season, and the sudden rise of the read option in the NFL, right now Manziel looks like a first round lock in 2014. Enjoy him while you can, Texas A&M. I know Texas can’t wait for him to leave.

You really have a beef with this don’t you?
February 19th, 2013 at 9:33 AM
sounds grueling.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:38 AM
shit, I would take the duck hunting trip he took to Stuttgart over all of those.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:43 AM
god, getting manzier fatigue.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:45 AM
If Cam can go to class, this guy can go to class.
Having said that, they are Aggies. They treat things and people at A&M as if they were nailed to a cross and arose on the 3rd day in College Station.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:45 AM
you really don’t think he deserves some of it, do you?
February 19th, 2013 at 9:48 AM
One of us needs a PUNS101 class.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:48 AM
you really think he doesn’t get any extra benefits because he is a student athlete, don’t you?
February 19th, 2013 at 9:50 AM
What about his offensive line?
February 19th, 2013 at 9:50 AM
They treat things and people at A&M as if they were nailed to a cross and arose on the 3rd day in College Station.
Very well done. Only in College Station would a 10-2 season cause this kind of ruckus.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:50 AM
why not ask him – hey, would you rather have “extra benefits” (whatever you deem those to be) or a cut of this $37 mil you helped us gain?
February 19th, 2013 at 9:53 AM
why not ask him – hey, would you rather have “extra benefits” (whatever you deem those to be) or a cut of this $37 mil you helped us gain?
then take away all scholarship money, any training or sports treatment he gets, all uniform and equipment, room and board, and any exposure he gets that could help him in the nfl. hell, aggie might was well get a cut off what his first nfl contract should be by your logic. pay the players.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:54 AM
How about the guy who works his ass off in practice helping Manziel prepare for these SEC games? He should get some of that 37 mil too, right?
February 19th, 2013 at 9:56 AM
not a bad idea, the school could argue that the fame and development of an athlete can be directly tied to all the training and marketing provided by the school. Pay the schools!!!
February 19th, 2013 at 9:56 AM
are the stadiums being filled to see “the guy who works his ass off in practice helping Manziel?” are people buying that guy’s jersey? Are they raising ticket prices because of that guy?
It still boggles my mind how so many don’t want these athletes to get paid.
As Jay Bilas said, go with the Olympic model.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:57 AM
how many offensive line jerseys are being sold? Only the gloree boys need to get paid
February 19th, 2013 at 9:58 AM
First of all, the Olympic model has nothing to do with the money A&M made.
Second of all, have you ever asked a player if they think they deserve to get paid?
Third, look how shitty college basketball is and teams still make a ton of money off of it.
February 19th, 2013 at 9:59 AM
I heard Peter King say Manziel doesn’t have a strong arm. What? Didn’t look like that to me. Dude was hitting guys deep and in stride the games I saw.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:02 AM
Jay Bilas is awful, but I do agree with him on this issue — to an extent. Compliance for this would be complicated, that’s the main problem, and why it’s still mostly just a fantasy.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:02 AM
so Manziel shouldn’t be paid because the dude on the 19th string isn’t being paid?
February 19th, 2013 at 10:04 AM
who ever said they didn’t want them to get paid? the players, from Manziel at the D-1 level all the way down to some chump playing NAIA soccer realizes when they sign up they aren’t getting paid, yet they line up to be on TV or whatever on signing day anyways. Sure, if offered I’m sure they would love to get paid. but do you seriously think that after a game in front of a packed stadium they sit around thinking about all the money they made the university?
this is why your argument is so lazy. it has nothing to do with people wanting the athletes to get paid or not.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:04 AM
TAMU did not earn $37 million off Manziel. Those media impression numbers are just hot air.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:05 AM
“Hey, look at the guy making my double latte mocha espresso at Starbucks. I can’t believe that guy only makes minimum wage. it boggles my mind he doesn’t want to get paid more.”
/TBL
February 19th, 2013 at 10:05 AM
Also, didn’t Jimmer do this?
February 19th, 2013 at 10:05 AM
are the stadiums being filled to see “the guy who works his ass off in practice helping Manziel?” are people buying that guy’s jersey? Are they raising ticket prices because of that guy?I don’t disagree with your point per se…but Kyle Field was sold out for pretty much every game before Johnny Manziel came on the scene, and will be sold out for every game after he leaves.
Interesting tidbit…
Texas A&M average home attendance in 2011: 87,163 in 2012: 86,777.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:08 AM
Does TBL know how universities work? I would assume that aTm has patents that have generated that kind of money at some point in time.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:08 AM
Pretty sure Manziel gets paid in pussy, clothes, food, goods, cash and what have you. Tax free. Let it go.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:10 AM
A&M (and any big college football school) sells out every game year in, year out. It doesn’t matter if it’s Ryan Tannehill, Manziel or Stephen McGee.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:11 AM
Pretty sure barista Mike would have some interesting insights here.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:11 AM
Javorskie Lane…that’s one powerful gunt
February 19th, 2013 at 10:14 AM
who swapped the English class for another online offering in sports management.
Interesting. English is a requirement. Sports management is an elective at this point. He is only a Sophomore.

Johnny Football is costing aTm fans!!!
February 19th, 2013 at 10:15 AM
Javorskie Lane…
Ha. Good pull, Butters.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:16 AM
Javorskie Lane…
Holy shit. Just remembered who is brother is.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:16 AM
Third, look how shitty college basketball is and teams still make a ton of money off of it.
You may want to check this … I thought basketball was bleeding cash?
February 19th, 2013 at 10:17 AM
Interesting. English is a requirement. Sports management is an elective at this point. He is only a Sophomore.
I took some electives before my requirements were fulfilled. I learned early that some of the elective classes are hard to get – take em when you can get em.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:18 AM

March Madness.
/do not audit my statement.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:19 AM
uh, the NCAA tournament is the NCAA’s biggest money maker, I’m fairly certain.
Give Manziel the right to make money off of his likeness. let him reap those benefits. no reason why he shouldn’t be able to.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:19 AM
I took some electives before my requirements were fulfilled. I learned early that some of the elective classes are hard to get – take em when you can get em.
Yeah, I did the same. It is just that you have to do English at some point. I wasn’t pointing fingers. Just seemed weird. One would think that this Fall won’t be any different in terms of fame for him.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:20 AM
Well, you’re probably right. I’ll amend. The arenas are still full. Games are still on TV. Merchandise is still being sold.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:22 AM
remove the restrictions that don’t allow students to accept money or favors, and then allow the chips to fall where they may. Amateurism is such a sham.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:23 AM
Unless I’m mistaken. A&M usually only sells #12 jerseys.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:24 AM
J Mac — What would be the fair share of the $37 million that Manziel ought to receive?
Secondly, what would be his fair share when calculating his tax liability?
February 19th, 2013 at 10:30 AM
In Jace’s world, Texas A&M began and will end in the time of Manziel.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:31 AM
He’ll reap them after next year if he so chooses. He interned for 3-5 years at a company and will make millions because of it. I’m amazed this is viewed in a negative light.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:36 AM
Even if he doesn’t make it in the pros, Manziel will make money for the rest of his life off of his likeness. (ex. Eric Crouch.)
February 19th, 2013 at 10:36 AM
This is a bit of a misinformation – the tournament benefits the NCAA and television stations, but is not nearly as profitable or lucrative for the actual schools.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:38 AM
Dunno why more can’t get on board with this, not like it would create any more competitive imbalance in CFB than already exists
February 19th, 2013 at 10:38 AM
As soon as Jay Bilas gives his six figure salary back I’ll start taking him serious about how the NCAA exploits college athletes for financial gain. You know, the exact same thing he does for ESPN.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:40 AM
I could see following the Olchimpic model, but I would think we wouldn’t see another Boise State type of ascension if that happened.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:41 AM
He absolutely does not deserve it. He signed an agreement (scholarship) that set his compensation.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:42 AM
One of the law-talkin’ guys would know more than me but I think such things are legally dubious which is why they’re listening to Ed O’Bannon’s case
February 19th, 2013 at 10:46 AM
Exactly.
ALL FUCKING THIS. He’s such a fucking hypocrite.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:48 AM
Most likely he can take a number of low level classes in a field of study, but won’t be able to take the high level clases after completing enough of a core curriculum with the necessary GPA.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:49 AM
This is why the Heisman is an UPPER CLASS-MAN award.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:57 AM
One of my son’s doctors competes in pistol shooting championships. She’s pretty hot.
February 19th, 2013 at 10:58 AM
Craig James thinks Manziel needs to take a course in dead hooker management.
Craig James also believes Beyonce’s Life Is But a Dream was a hard-hitting piece of investigative journalism.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:01 AM
Why would I hold Jay Bilas, ESPN, or any network, more repsonsible for paying athletes than the institutions they play for?
February 19th, 2013 at 11:06 AM
Responsible for paying the athletes, no. Responsible for playing a roll in the multi billion dollar fees paid to the NCAA for broadcast rights that are chief amongst the reasons that people can say the athletes are being exploited by the schools and NCAA, yes.
The television money is a huge part of this and those that profit from it seem a bit disingenuous singling out the NCAA for exploiting the athletes while ignoring the broadcast side of the issue.
Maybe Jay has campaigned for the networks to play tough with the NCAA and conferences and only offer bids of a dollar for the rights, though.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:15 AM
Well if you want to take it out of context, then I’d imagine LSU had a 2 loss season in ’07 that might’ve provoked a similar response.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:19 AM
oh, a false dichotomy, I see. Because he feels college athletes should receive pay, he shouldn’t be making money covering those athletes.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:33 AM
No it’s that he constantly rails against the NCAA exploiting them for profit but doesn’t acknowledge the roll ESPN/ABC have played in the boom of college sports turning into golden goose that shits out billions. He acts like it’s a one sided issue. Make that money, Jay, but own the fact that it’s not the NCAA who is funneling in the money.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:34 AM
he has in other interviews. He freely admits that ESPN is partly to blame as well.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:35 AM
Well then I stand corrected, good for him. I now have no problem with it. Link?
February 19th, 2013 at 11:38 AM
I honestly had never seen him mention it, had only seen him address one side of the issue and it made no sense to do so.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:40 AM
ill have to find which one. He’s been on the CBS college bball podcast, Kornheiser’s radio show, and some other shows. I just know that he was aware of ESPN’s responsibility.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:26 PM
ugh i have the same problem going to class… such an uproar…so just don’t go
February 21st, 2013 at 4:11 PM
He is a piece of crap. Hope he brakes his leg
