David Falk Destroys John Wall, Says Wizards Should Trade Him
David Falk, the well known agent who used to represent Michael Jordan as a player, is not a John Wall fan. I mean, not at all. In an interview with Mike Wise, Falk (who is a Wizards season ticket holder) says that the team should trade Wall before he becomes Nene. Bradley Beal is the only player he think is worth keeping.
“I’m not down on John Wall,” Falk said, before being further down on John Wall. “I just think people want him to be something he’s never going to be. He’s a big tease. He doesn’t have a good enough feel for the game to be an elite player. I don’t think he’ll ever be the player you think he is.”
He also talks about how John Wall doesn’t have the feel for the game that Magic Johnson had. Wall seems to be a nice young guy, and keeps drawing these ridiculous criticisms. Wall doesn’t have to be Magic Johnson in order for a team not to trade him away. What if he is, say, the next Gary Payton?
Here is a list of other guards who had at least 400 assists at age 21 and 22, were drafted in the top five, and had a win shares per 48 minutes between 0.060 and 0.080.
There is Wall, sandwiched between Gary Payton and Chauncey Billups. Both of those players did mature (remember, Wall is only 22), and were key pieces to very good teams. Payton is a particularly interesting comparison, an adept defender and penetrator who wasn’t necessarily a good outside shooter when he started in the NBA. John Wall is only 1 of 13 from 3 point range this year, after shooting 3 for 42 last year. Payton started 4 of 36 his first two years, and never shot over 30% until age 26.
If Wall can just have a career like Gary Payton, he will be worth keeping around, despite what David Falk might believe. The die is not cast, and the Wizards have been better since Wall returned.

even JMac doesn’t dislike Wall that much.
Perfect interview. Mike Wise and David Falk, both douchebags

Critique seems pretty measured for a destruction. Fooled again by hyperbole

Eh, he said a bunch of stupid things and sounded like a jackass, trying to tear down Wall for not being as good as the best young player in the league.
When I bitch at Duffy, you wouldn’t say I “destroy” him when I don’t like his stuff, it’s just bitching that depending on the day can just sound like petulant complaining. It’s only ‘destroying’ when it’s an unassailable point and tarnishes the rep of the victim. IMO.
BTW… haven’t seen much NBA, and checked on Kyrie’s stats/game logs. Wow, he is just solid across the board. Good for Cleveland. Hopefully when he gets solid players around him he can work them into his game.

WWoS, Kyrie is the real deal. He destroyed Rondo and the Celtics

I don’t bitch at anyone now, but I’ve gotten on Lisk for various things, fair and unfair.
February 14th, 2013 at 6:04 PM
To be fair… a case could be made Kyrie hasn’t improved since rookie year.
FG% the same, even though 3P% is up, and FT% down. Rebounds exactly the same, assists the same, while turnovers/PFs are up, all in 17% more MPG.
Of course taking more shots means that staying the same is actually an improvement, and it’s not all about stats. But I guess I’m not willing to write of John Wall, especially not based on comps to Kyrie.

well, kyrie was injured a lot of last year.

How is Wall on defense? Payton was the premier defensive PG in the NBA for a lot of his career. Contributed significantly to his value.

There should be, accidentally omitted. Added now.

He’s not a fan but I don’t think it was preposterous. Gary Payton was one of the best on ball defenders I’ve ever seen in my life. There was tons of value in his game there. To say Wall could be like Payton is as much hyperbole as saying Falk “destroyed” Wall. He was saying get value out of him as teams might make a poor deal for a #1 overall pick.
Does Wall play any defense? I have no idea.
February 14th, 2013 at 6:30 PM
Straight up trade: Wall for Austin Rivers.
That should settle Falk down.
February 14th, 2013 at 6:32 PM
Falk shoulda/coulda been more diplomatic. Indirectly blaming Wall for his teammates’ shortcomings is cheap.
February 14th, 2013 at 6:34 PM
I am confused by the GP comp… that is Wall’s ceiling. And not one to be ashamed of, either.
February 14th, 2013 at 7:12 PM
Wall is a decent/improving defender. It seems pretty unlikely that Wall will ever be nearly as good as Payton on defense but his overall value could end up pretty similar.
Also, this is funny: Hopefully when he gets solid players around him he can work them into his game.
Already plotting Kyrie’s departure from Cleveland, eh?

Cavs have 6 1st rounders in the next three years and 8 2nd rounders in the next four. And a fuckload of cap flexibility. Until the young players stop improving under Byron there’s no reason for worry. I am loving the Raptors winning streak and the Lakers winning a few games. The Lakers getting the #8 seed would be ideal for the Cavs taking their pick.

In 1999, Payton went 24.2, 8.9 assts, 6.5 rebs, 2 steals a game as a point guard with first team defense. he was filthy.
February 14th, 2013 at 8:58 PM
Payton might be the second best PG of the 90s, at least top 5. He and Shawn Kemp/Detlef Schrempf were unstoppable on NBA Jam!

There was an NBA Jam code, where you saved your name in the arcade ones, your record would be kept, and you got some status if you beat all the teams. You put in your initials and birthday.
There was these 2 codes, you could put in, and be one of the 2 guys that built the game. One guy was a short white guy with glasses with a wife beater and a derby hat. He was always on fire too. I’d kill to get that code again since I see that game resurrected in some bars now.

Thanks I’ll have to sift through this. I looked a few years ago online so maybe it’s finally made it’s way to the light.
