Nerlens Noel Is Out for the Year With a Torn ACL
Nerlens Noel is out for the rest of the year, according to Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio, with what was suspected after his horrific injury last night–a torn ACL. Noel has likely played his last game at Kentucky, and will now begin the recovery process as he looks to the NBA Draft. He would have been in contention for the number one pick. Sad stuff to see such a promising player, and one who was really starting to emerge as the season went on, go down like this.

that’s it? you woulda thought the kid got shot with his reaction last night.
February 13th, 2013 at 1:51 PM
Who’s to say he still won’t be? Blake Griffin was taken first and had micro fracture shortly thereafter and came back without any issues outside of a lack of offensive moves. I bet this cat still goes top 5.

Greatest injury reaction since Santonio Holmes decided to hand the defense a touchdown
February 13th, 2013 at 1:54 PM
Awesome.
February 13th, 2013 at 1:54 PM
As a Magic fan I wouldn’t mind still taking him. It guarantees we suck again next year and can turn our attention to another 1st pick in the draft…Wiggins or Parker…
February 13th, 2013 at 1:56 PM
Trey sighting. Awesome. How’s the little fellow doing?
February 13th, 2013 at 1:57 PM
Down double digits and the game over, he was picked clean by Mike Rosario. Had the kid let up and let Rosario have the basket, he’d still be playing.
Sucks, because the play he made was what makes me like this kid.
February 13th, 2013 at 1:59 PM
Much better. He’s a bit behind on his motor skills, but smart as a whip. It can be very annoying. He recognizes the things he doesn’t like and fight back. (i.e. – Medication. Doctors)
February 13th, 2013 at 1:59 PM
Took me a second to realize this was a review for the movie and not in relation to Noel looking like Argyle.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:00 PM
Oh, and thanks for asking.

Mario Manningham did the exact same thing later in the year, against the Seahawks, except they didn’t run it back.

I wonder how much that will impact things. I wasn’t seeing him listed at #1 (everyone seems to have McLemore), anyway, but he’s a pretty big time talent. He reminded of Antonio McDyess to begin with and knee problems don’t change that comparison much. Blake got hurt after he got drafted so I don’t know if scouts would make that comparison.

Nils Ekman breaking his arm for the Penguins and deciding he was just going to open the Zamboni door and walk off the ice during live play, and drawing a penalty for it, is my favorite.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:02 PM
That’s good to hear, Trey.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:03 PM
Tell me there’s video of this somewhere
February 13th, 2013 at 2:03 PM
Glad to hear the little guy is doing well, Trey.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:03 PM
I don’t remember if I put this on twitter or on here but I want to replace the Wilhelm scream in movies with the Nerlens scream.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:04 PM
Maybe it’s because I didn’t pay attention but were there this many catastrophic knee injuries even just ten years ago? You have to wonder if PEDs play a role (not necessarily in Noel’s case), maybe in letting athletes push themselves harder than their ligaments and tendons can handle.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:04 PM
I think the timing destroys his draft stock. Even when he gets healthy, he is going to be so far behind the NBA curve. Staying in school another year wouldn’t be a bad choice
February 13th, 2013 at 2:04 PM
Trey, what happened? Just looked at the comments and saw you dipped out for 3 months.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:05 PM
(waits for some asshole to say Reggie Lewis)
February 13th, 2013 at 2:06 PM
Kids playing only one sport year-round happened.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:07 PM
The Paul Pierce wheelchair was good, if only for the outrage among non-Celtic fans
February 13th, 2013 at 2:07 PM
I cannot find one, though in searching I found out it was actually an elbow dislocation which sounds fucking awful. I remember watching it live and being dumbfounded.
Ending up retiring due to a stroke, too. Lucky guy.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:09 PM

he went on an extended quest for a clue, but seems to have come back empty handed
February 13th, 2013 at 2:09 PM
In early December the kiddo needed emergency surgery on his heart. Part of his defect not addressed in the previous surgeries was failing.
He got out of the hospital a few weeks ago, and God-willing we’re finally getting back to some semblance of a regular routine.
I think this is the first week where we haven’t been going to the doctor daily.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:09 PM
Worst injury/reaction I’ve witnessed in person. Happened in high school football. Noel level shouting ensued
February 13th, 2013 at 2:12 PM
go see girls h.s. basketball and volleyball; it’s even more over the top with injuries
knee injuries are going to be there in basketball;
February 13th, 2013 at 2:12 PM
Damn. The Bama robbery story is worse than I thought. I just assumed they stole some kids’ stuff while he wasn’t paying attention (I didn’t read much about it). Didn’t know they beat his ass.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:13 PM
Fuck the NBA Draft Age limit
February 13th, 2013 at 2:14 PM
You have to wonder if PEDs play a role
I’m guessing yes.
Kids playing only one sport year-round happened.
This, not so much. Just my opinion.
I think it’s dumb-ass weight trainers who have these guys train with extreme weights, fewer reps and a low variety of exercises.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:15 PM
Two things: 1) What a clusterfuck. 2) I’d love the Super Bowl to be played on a Saturday.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:15 PM

Nick Saban approves of the perfect execution of the game plan.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:16 PM
Agreed. It should be the same as the NFL. 3 years after you graduate high school. And for no reason other than I think it would make college basketball better to watch.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:16 PM
Aquafina water tastes funny.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:17 PM
Agreed that is a dumb approach to apply to basketball
February 13th, 2013 at 2:17 PM
I can imagine him scolding the kids, cutting them and then joking with Kirby about how well executed their attack was.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:17 PM
I had my ankle dislocated and then they didnt re-set it properly. turrible.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:17 PM
He should have been airlifted out of the arena…even if that meant sending Kool Aid Man through the roof first.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:19 PM
Agreed that is a dumb approach to apply to basketball
From my experience, it’s the approach no matter the sport.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:21 PM
I hope it snows like crazy the whole weekend of the Super Bowl next year.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:21 PM
I don’t necessarily have a problem with it for football
February 13th, 2013 at 2:24 PM
squeaky shoes on a hardwood court is going to blow out knees.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:26 PM
I don’t necessarily have a problem with it for football
I do. I still think it contributed to my kid’s ACL tear. Squatting with too much weight and squatting too far down.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:26 PM
There was an Adidas streak going, but I think Rondo broke that.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:27 PM
He just wasn’t strong enough apparently
February 13th, 2013 at 2:27 PM
He just wasn’t strong enough apparently
Not funny. At all. Bad subject with me.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:29 PM
I didn’t realize that. I went with Kobe IV’s and Kobe VI’s for mine.
I do think footwear is a huge reason in all sports. They are so much better at gripping, it puts that much more strain on your ligaments.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:29 PM
Good luck with that. What was the problem/surgery?
February 13th, 2013 at 2:30 PM
It has nothing to do with weightlifting. He came down straight legged with no flexibility in his landing. It’s why so many girl/women basketball players suffer torn acl’s.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:31 PM
Have you seen the video his hospital did for Trey’s little guy? It’s really well done.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:31 PM
Oops.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:33 PM
Probably not, but blame others for an injury. That’s always cool. I bet you yell at the umps at your kids little league games as well.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:35 PM
I bet you yell at the umps at your kids little league games as well.
I think squawkbox yells at the umps at Little League games that he has no rooting interest in.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:35 PM
Bad enough to play for Notre Dame?
I’ll take a look. Doesn’t seem like it has the exact details though.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:36 PM
Yeah…it’s not for med students. Just those of us with a heart.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:37 PM
squawk, i dont dispute that chances of injury are increased. i think that has been a willing tradeoff for increased performance. a shitty tradeoff for high schoolers no doubt
February 13th, 2013 at 2:38 PM
The umps r dee debil. Probably worse, they probably all watch ESPN.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:39 PM
Hey… I’m two weeks removed from seeing the ultrasound of my first kid and being told there’s heartbeat, so I’m watching it pretty emotionally myself right now. But I still am interested in the details too.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:39 PM

Nope – don’t yell at umps. Snap decisions are prone to error.
I get pissed at people who are poor planners, that don’t recognize their own deficiencies in teaching kids proper technique and who are using the backs of kids to make a path for themselves.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:39 PM
*there’s no heartbeat
February 13th, 2013 at 2:42 PM
I think squawkbox yells at the umps at Little League games that he has no rooting interest in.
Awesome.
I’ve seen too many fistfights at tournaments. Our team keeps it real quiet.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:43 PM
seeing the ultrasound of my first kid and being told there’s heartbeat
Congrats. Life’s good.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:44 PM
Sorry to hear that.
Touching video about the Tin Man. Hope he gets to enjoy Applebee’s soon.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:44 PM
Whoops.

I read that as there’s a heartbeat. Sorry man. Sorry.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:47 PM
Yeah. That’s my fault. Made me laugh though.
February 13th, 2013 at 2:48 PM

February 13th, 2013 at 2:54 PM
I’ve been there, support your lady and take care of each other.
February 13th, 2013 at 3:02 PM
That sucks dude. Been there twice, so I know what you and the lady are going through. Hope it works out for you next time.
February 13th, 2013 at 3:04 PM
WWoS, praying for you and the wife
February 13th, 2013 at 3:37 PM
I thought of you and mentioned you to my wife. We found out right about the time you were talking about the problems you had and adopting, and then we found out we were pregnant… literally on the first try. Guess that came back to teach us a lesson. Doing much better now though, thanks everyone for caring. No choice but to keep going and try again at this point.
February 13th, 2013 at 3:40 PM
3 or 4 years after my parents had me in 82, my mom had a miscarriage. they waited a couple years and then had my brother in 89. Keep on going, live life, and try again.
February 13th, 2013 at 3:45 PM
Sorry wwos
February 14th, 2013 at 8:12 AM
Sorry to hear that WWOS.
