Jim Boeheim Wouldn’t Answer a Question From ESPN’s Andy Katz, Calls Him an “Idiot” and a “Disloyal Person” [Video & Audio]

Syracuse lost to Connecticut in Storrs Wednesday, 66-58, in the last regular season game between the two teams before the Orange leave for the ACC. The game was mostly boring – the Orange missed 19 of 23 three-pointers – but the post-game press conference featured fireworks: Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim went off on ESPN’s Andy Katz. Here’s audio, via WAER Sports:
What on earth is this about? Realignment, perhaps? We’ll update video as soon as we get it. [UPDATE: Here's video, via the New Haven Register via Mengus. The early scuttlebutt is that Boeheim told Katz some off-the-record information about James Southerland's suspension, and Katz went and reported it.]

Started last year with Katz’s comments/articles on the Bernie Fine situation. Even challenged Jim and Julie about their dedication to charity.

Also, during the game, Katz went into serious detail about Southerlands academic situation.

This is why you don’t say shit off the record to journalists. It’s their job to report, and they want stories.
February 13th, 2013 at 10:41 PM
Good for jim. Katz did write a lot of bullshit last year on syracuse

Which is a violation of student privacy rights.

Yep. It isn’t 1955 anymore.
February 13th, 2013 at 11:08 PM
Yeah, no. If you burn sources on “off the record,” you’re going to reap the consequences. “It isn’t 1955?” What the hell does that even mean?
February 13th, 2013 at 11:11 PM
Shit gets reported all the time that wasn’t intended to be aired out. Don’t act like it doesn’t happen.
February 13th, 2013 at 11:13 PM
In order for that to be an issue for Katz, he would have to have clearance and/or access to that info. He can go run and tell any of that once he gets it, as he isn’t bound by any confidentiality.
February 13th, 2013 at 11:19 PM
There’s a difference between stuff that “wasn’t intended to be aired out” and burning a source on speaking off the record. a big difference, which any journalist who has any ethics would recognize. he said, “This is why you don’t say shit off the record to journalists. It’s their job to report, and they want stories.”
that is bullshit. If a reporter hears or sees something in the process of reporting, then fine. If he is speaking to someone “off the record,” then that shit is…wait for it…off the record.

It means that in this day and age, most people who work in sports media would cut off one of their kid’s toes to be the first to report a story. It’s Ricky Bobby Reporting: If you’re not first, you’re last.
February 13th, 2013 at 11:22 PM
Exactly.

As much as I like to detract from Syracuse, Boeheim is great. But this is how you handle trifling members of the media…

NOT ONE PENNY
February 13th, 2013 at 11:26 PM
so you know a lot reporters who look a guy in the face and say, “This is off the record,” and then burn that source? Show me where that happens. Ya know, besides AJ Daulerio.
February 13th, 2013 at 11:38 PM
Well, there was that time with Boeheim and Katz……
February 13th, 2013 at 11:39 PM
Errrr.. Not one dime
February 13th, 2013 at 11:42 PM
fellas i’m with crooked nose. you guys are painting with way too broad a brush. any rnalist who cares about his cred as well as knows he’ll be rewarded down the line with some scoop bc he kept mum when asked will absolutely respect confidentiality
there is slime as you cite, but those bad apples should not spoil the bunch
it’s something i deal with at least weekly and that’s just trade pub work. vendors, brands, retailers, agencies….no one wants to piss off partners. they will give you background info and their opinion but if they ask for ‘off the record’ on something and you promise it and then break the promise you have lost a source forever
and in sports, where beat guys have to see their sources daily…good luck with that
February 13th, 2013 at 11:44 PM
Problem for Katz is if you become known as the guy that burns anonymous/off the record sources then you will no longer have any sources. Once word of shenanigans like that gets out you get shunned fast and become nothing more than a news reader.
February 13th, 2013 at 11:49 PM
boeheim should not use the word disloyal tho…katz doesn;t work for him…
…or does he?
anyway we have an ethical situation going on here in chicago. rose talked with usat about his comeback, and this amid him being off limits to the daily chicago beat guys
fans don’t care who rose talks to but he should know better than to treat the chicago guys like that. some of them have been a part of his publicity since high school, and while he doesn’t owe them, he’s been a good kid thus far and it is disappointing. jordan always treated beat guys well, even as so many out of town and magazine people pulled at his time
maybe adidas was in on it, maybe out of his hands, but i tend to think rose can call shots by now

You’re right, Vez. Not all reporters are like that. But if there’s something you don’t want in the news, you shouldn’t say anything, especially to a reporter. Whose occupation is finding stories. Even if Katz doesn’t report it, who’s to say he wouldn’t blurt it out to someone that would?
February 14th, 2013 at 12:03 AM
At this point of Boeheim’s career, the media needs him more than he needs them.
February 14th, 2013 at 12:06 AM
comes back to katz either way meth. i dont care or think it is unethical, but imo it was stupid by katz. only hurts himself long term

meth you’re an idiot and disloyal
but seriously….you are correct, the best way to keep it a secret is to not trust anyone. as for the blurting part…that’s just as bad as printing or tweeting. once you have the off the record info, it’s your baby
don’t drop it!
February 14th, 2013 at 12:11 AM
That’s where we agree to disagree, SC. I’m of the mindset that if there’s something I don’t want known, I’m not bringing it up to anybody.
February 14th, 2013 at 8:23 AM
Props to Cursed who earlier in the day mentioned Jim Boheim loves to put down reporters.
February 14th, 2013 at 8:30 AM
Correction: the game was in Hartford
February 14th, 2013 at 11:18 AM
Cursed always points that out because he asked an idiotic question at a press conference and Boeheim rightfully chewed him out. He never mentions his moronic question though. Interesting.
