North Carolina. Duke. Does this game really need an introduction? Sure, the 325th meeting between the teams tonight (9 pm, ESPN) in Cameron Indoor is lacking juice – the Tar Heels aren’t ranked, Duke has won five in a row – but in the event the game is a blowout along the lines of Michigan State and Michigan, perhaps these five highlights from the rivalry will interest you. If not, there’s always Nashville on ABC at 10.

1974 – #1 North Carolina, down 86-78 with 17 seconds left, comes from behind to beat #4 Duke 96-92.

1995 – #2 North Carolina holds off Duke 102-100 after Jeff Capel sinks a 37-foot shot at the buzzer to send the game into double overtime.

2004 – With the game tied at 81 in overtime, Chris Duhon goes coast to coast and #1 Duke beats #17 UNC 83-81.

2005 – #2 North Carolina, down 73-64 with 3 minutes left, comes from behind to beat #6 Duke 75-73.

2012 – Austin Rivers’ 3-pointer at the buzzer pushes #9 Duke past #5 Carolina 85-84.

Perhaps, but the vitriol between such closely located campuses is silly. For two schools in the same state, they are like night and day. And the NJ notation is entirely correct.

If you had ever been at a game, you might think differently. Again, close proximity and light years difference in similarity. Duke isn’t really a NC school but more of a northeast embassy located in Durham, NC. Duke is probably the closest school to Notre Dame in the south, except we are talking bball instead of FB.
