Rick Brunson, Donyell Marshall Not Happy with Jay Williams’ Marijuana Comments About the 2002-2003 Chicago Bulls
Jay Williams was the subject of a lengthy feature in the New York Times Sunday, and the biggest news item of the 6,000 word piece was the former point guard’s allegation that some of his teammates would smoke weed before games.
The Chicago Tribune tracked down a couple Bulls from the 2002-2003 team Williams was on, and – shocker! – they’re not happy.
Said Rick Brunson, who is now an assistant coach with the Bobcats:
“I like Jay, but when you make blanket statements, you incriminate everyone. You have to look in the mirror first: ‘Did I contribute to some of those things?’ Your career didn’t go the way it should’ve gone. Let it go. You’re doing a great job on ESPN. You should be honored and blessed the Bulls paid you.”
Added Donyell Marshall:
“My thing is, why say these things now?” said Donyell Marshall, one of the team leaders from 2002-03. “You don’t need to be making people assume. You’re messing up situations for other people. Now, instead of Fred (Hoiberg, coach of Iowa State) focusing on the NCAA tournament or whatever, he’s got to deal with that (crap).”
Yes, because obviously, The Mayor Fred Hoiberg was smoking buds and sitting on the bench for 36 of 48 minutes. The Tribune also tried to reach out to ESPN’s Jalen Rose, who declined comment. They did add this note about Rose and Williams:
Tension was palpable between Williams and Jalen Rose, who famously tweaked Williams after the No. 2 overall pick missed all five free-throw attempts in a season-opening victory at Boston. “In the NBA, we just call that choking,” Rose said that night.
Wow, who says that about a teammate? Here’s the game story from 2002. Three Bulls – anonymously – told the Tribune they did try to visit Williams in the hospital (in the Times story, he said nobody visited him), but they were rebuffed by his family. [Tribune]

That team won 30 games which was nine more than the previous high following Jordan’s retirement…they earned every bud in the pipe

I think I watched every game of that team. Look at some of those names. 2003 should have been the start of something fun. Of course they were a year early. They’re the worst team in the league for 4 years straight, then right before the 2003 draft hits, they improve to 30 wins and have to settle for fucking Hinrich. Not that I’ve thought about this since.

As much as Jay Williams is bemoaning all these guys and their “terrible judgment” by smoking weed, the person on that team that made the worst decision – by far – was Jay by riding a motorcycle and ruining his career.
Who really made the reckless, career-threatening decision here?

O/T since I missed the DUI discussion in the Bama post
A buddy of mine has a theory that you should keep an unopened bottle of liquor in your car. if you get pulled over for a DUI, shut off the car, get out and drop the keys, open the bottle and start drinking. that way, you’ll get an open container, but you can say the alcohol on your breath is from the drink you just had.
just a theory at this point, hasn’t been attempted

Why is it news that NBA players smoke weed?

Thinking back to the turn-of-the-century Bulls is so unpleasant that I can’t be expected to get commenting right
The summer where after an entire season of being teased with cap space and names galore they ended up with Ron Mercer was rough

A black NFL player told Mike Freeman that if Rob Gronkowski was black, media and fan wouldn’t be viewing some of the stunts he is pulling so lightly. I kinda, sorta agree with that sentiment. I think Gronk is getting some light backlash from fans and media, but it would be lot more intense if he was black.

I guess this means that Brunson and Marshall definitely smoked pot, right? makes sense, Marshall had that glazed “don’t give a shit” look 90% of the time he was on the court.

Smoked blunts before bball practice in high school a few times. I can get on board with the accused players. Used to get in a zone shooting wise. Also laughed alot during stretching.

also, looking at that photo, I totally forgot that Trey Parker played for the 2003 Bulls.

The reason he isn’t getting more backlash isn’t because he’s white, it’s because he really isn’t doing anything that egregious. How much shit should someone catch for being photographed at bars during the offseason?
February 12th, 2013 at 1:46 PM
Could you imagine the amount of flak Vince Young would get if they caught him in a bar shirtless with a bunch of other sweaty men doing pounding tequila?
February 12th, 2013 at 1:47 PM
I used to get stoned all the time before pick-up games. I was a surgeon on that shit.
