Champions League: Celtic vs. Juventus, Valencia vs. PSG
Celtic vs. Juventus
Hoops vs. Stripes…Juventus is back, finally, to their stature before Calciopoli tore them down in 2006. Last season, La Vecchia Signora went undefeated en route to winning the scudetto. This season, they hold a five-point lead, scoring the most goals (50) and allowing the fewest (16) in Serie A. Famed coach Antonio Conte is back from suspension. They have reached the Champions League knockout stages for the first time since 2009.
The Bianconeri play a stable, consistent 3-5-2, pivoting on savvy Italian national team veterans Andrea Pirlo and Gigi Buffon. They have allowed just 40 goals in 68 matches the past two seasons in Serie A and the Champions League. Not bad odds to win at 12-1. Just throwing that out there.
Celtic have an 18-point lead in the downtrodden, Rangers-free SPL. It’s not clear how that translates to real soccer. They had an excellent group stage run, though, beating Barcelona 2-1 at home and earning a rare, for them, away win at Spartak Moscow. The Scots are overmatched. Their basic strategy will be to defend at home and try to steal an away goal in Turin.
Valencia vs. PSG
Paris St. Germain are Europe’s latest superclub. They spent big last summer, signing both Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic from AC Milan. They also just signed David Beckham, who won’t play in this first leg. PSG blew through a weak group last fall. They are also on a great run of form in France, taking 25 of the last 27 possible points while outscoring opponents 21-1. Injuries have hit the spine of this team, though. They will be missing both Silva and Thiago Motta with thigh problems.
Valencia are saddled with atrocious debts. They have sold numerous star players, including David Villa, David Silva and Juan Mata. Still, somehow, they keep stumbling their way into the Champions League. Los Che finished second to Bayern Munich in the group stage, taking all 12 point from the weaker clubs. In the Primera Liga, they have been outscored, but remain one of five teams within three points of the final Champions League spot.

Still can’t believe that. Barca had 89% possession with 23 shots (14 SOG). Just wasn’t their day.
February 12th, 2013 at 2:44 PM
Wow, these match-ups are the exact opposite of Bayern-Arsenal or Real-Man U glamour (h/t Canadia) ties.
February 12th, 2013 at 2:48 PM
Kaiser don’t forget that we also have Galatasaray-Schalke and Malaga-Porto.
February 12th, 2013 at 2:49 PM
It’s almost like not addressing the gaping holes in Barca’s central defense has been causing them problems the last two years.
/mas que some bullshit

I used to say that Champions League really doesn’t start til round of 16. Let’s revise, shall we? Champions League really doesn’t start til the quarter-final stage. By then, ALL the shitty ass eastern european and broke ass spanish and italian clubs are gone.
February 12th, 2013 at 2:50 PM
And Celtic are out.
February 12th, 2013 at 2:52 PM
what happened with that liverpool loss yesterday cowboy? didnt see any of it
February 12th, 2013 at 2:52 PM
Their 2 best defenders were out injured that game, but keep reaching.
February 12th, 2013 at 2:52 PM
Celtic now need at least two today. Goodnight moon.
February 12th, 2013 at 2:53 PM
Liverpool couldn’t finish for shit yesterday, and Agger was dreadful at the back.
February 12th, 2013 at 2:53 PM
I will say that number of ill-informed journalists writing “more than a club” love letters have dropped down significantly. People are starting to realize that those fuckers don’t deserve our sympathy.

Is Juventus or Newcastle considered the owner of the black/white vert stripe jersey?
February 12th, 2013 at 2:54 PM
I’m guessing Newcastle. I think they were established first.
February 12th, 2013 at 2:57 PM
Actually Pique came on before their second goal. And Puyol is not their second best defender anymore, not in Europe at least where there’s actually better competition than La Liga, too old to keep up.
You put Silva with Pique and they win the CL last year.
February 12th, 2013 at 2:57 PM
idk about the history of the jerseys script, but newcastle has been an also ran for a while now
February 12th, 2013 at 2:58 PM
Dogshit team selection without Sturridge available, terrible finishing, Gerrard misses the penalty and then their defense breaks down as it always does.
February 12th, 2013 at 2:58 PM
Good guess. Newcaslte introduced them in 1894, Juventus in 1903.
/too lazy to link
February 12th, 2013 at 2:58 PM
I’ve watched alan shearer highlight videos a billion times so this pains me.
February 12th, 2013 at 2:59 PM
okay they both been rocking those jerseys for 100 years, I’ll let it slide.
February 12th, 2013 at 3:03 PM
who is the favorite for tevez?
February 12th, 2013 at 3:04 PM
Boca Juniors
February 12th, 2013 at 3:05 PM
Pique was still coming back from an injury, so he was not even close to 100%. I have been Puyol’s biggest fan since he came up, so I might be biased, but he is a great defender. There is a reason he is still Barca’s captain, even with the talent they have up front.
February 12th, 2013 at 3:06 PM
Friend of mine was a Newcastle native and rabid NUFC fan. When the club was relegated he was beyond depressed.
February 12th, 2013 at 3:06 PM
PECOTA has projections out
/pecota looks european
February 12th, 2013 at 3:08 PM
With how much they dominate possession they’re always most likely to concede on the counter, which is why they need fast defenders in the middle. Chelsea exploited the everloving shit out of this and that’s why we’re stuck with those cocksuckers still being relevant for a few more years (that and Messi reverting to Argentina NT performances for one day).
They need to buy a central defender. Muniesa can still be great if he recovers from his knee injury but that has to be their priority.
February 12th, 2013 at 3:10 PM
Yeah it might be their biggest area of weakness at the moment, but I’m sick of watching Valdes let in crap goals too.
February 12th, 2013 at 3:12 PM
Oh yeah I mean behind replacing Valdes since he’s leaving, that’s a given. They’ll raid Germany for ter Stegen if they’re smart, Liverpool for Reina if they’re dumb.
(please god be the latter)
February 12th, 2013 at 3:14 PM
No thanks on Reina. Seen grumblings about De Gea as well. No thanks again. Silva would have been a terrific addition last season, but I think they prefer someone younger.
February 12th, 2013 at 3:15 PM
Their entire shopping spree this summer should be done in Germany.
ter Stegen, Hummels, and they’re set.
February 12th, 2013 at 3:16 PM
and Agger was dreadful at the back.
They have to find another option back there, that kid is terrible. I didn’t see yesterday but in their previous match against City it was obvious he was waaay over his head
February 12th, 2013 at 3:17 PM
Also on the serious tip I don’t see how Beckham plays in the CL outside of garbage time minutes. Who’s he replacing? Lucas? Lavezzi?
February 12th, 2013 at 3:18 PM
He’s one of the best central defenders in the world, and one of the most complete, has been having an off month or so. Problem lies with the coaching in defense largely. But he does need a new partner.
February 12th, 2013 at 3:18 PM
I don’t really know much about ter Stegen except he’s a big dude, and only 20.
February 12th, 2013 at 3:22 PM
Well, he’s also a dog lover. Good enough for me. From his Wiki page:
February 12th, 2013 at 3:23 PM
This is a golden age of young German keepers. ter Stegen and Neuer will be one of the best keeper combos a national team has ever had at its disposal soon, plus Ron-Robert Zieler (who was a United player, oooooooooooooooooops).
February 12th, 2013 at 3:26 PM
Neuer is scary as hell. Would love him on my side.
February 12th, 2013 at 3:28 PM
Wellllllllllllllllllllllp PSG are through.
February 12th, 2013 at 3:41 PM
Anyone got a Juventus link?
February 12th, 2013 at 3:45 PM
Link
Tinyurl, getting around whatever stupid fucking filter USAToday uses to block streaming links, since whenever it started.
February 12th, 2013 at 4:14 PM
I think that your seeing a golden age for young keepers period. Add Courtouis, Butland, Koval (Kiev), De Gea and Lloris and you have more potential elite gks than you’ve had in at least a decade. That position is going to be stacked soon.
I know everyone’s waiting for Real/ManU (hoping for a tornado to win that match) but Shakhtar/Borussia should be fantastic. Lots of young fast talent on both sides.
February 12th, 2013 at 4:37 PM
Zlatan “I don’t choke in big situations, this friendly goal against England proves it” Ibrahimovic blows the tie wide open. Good work fucknut.
