Maryland Terps – My Terps – in Serious Danger of Missing the NCAA Tournament, Face Must-Win vs. Duke
We’re less than five weeks away from Selection Sunday, and it’s time to start deep dives into the murky and often-baffling world of RPI and SOS and “quality wins.” First up? My Maryland Terrapins. Nope, I didn’t go to Maryland, but in the summer and preseason, I hyped the Terps and their future-NBA center Alex Len.*

Here’s the Terps’ resume:
Record: 17-7, 5-6 in the ACC
RPI (per ESPN): 70
Ken Pom ranking: 59
Record vs. the RPI Top 25: 1-2
Record vs. the RPI Top 50: 1-4
Strength of Schedule (per ESPN): 116
Good wins: vs NC State. Crickets …
Bad losses: Swept by Florida State
This is a very blah resume. NC State has been sliding, so that win (at home, on a last-second tip) isn’t very impressive. FSU has been sliding, too, so getting swept by the Seminoles trumps the win over the Wolfpack.
Saturday, in his latest bracket projection – which is futures-based and tied-to to Ken Pom stats – Jason Lisk had the Terps out. Obviously, the loss to Virginia Sunday didn’t help their cause.

Now, the good news – there’s a terrific opportunity for a win Saturday at home against Mason Plumlee and Duke. It’s a great spot, too – the Blue Devils have been hit/miss on the road lately (lost to NC State, shelled by Miami, escaped Wake, whipped FSU). They barely beat BC Sunday, 62-61. Wednesday, Duke hosts rival UNC. The Terps should hope for a post-Heels letdown and, having no mid-week game themselves, beat the Blue Devils.
They’ll need to, because the only other chance at a Top 50 RPI win is against UNC (at home, March 6th). Good luck getting an at-large bid with one Top 50 win.
And really, at this point in the season, do you trust the Terps on the road to handle auto-wins like at BC, at GT, at Wake? Things are very, very bleak in College Park.

The Terps must beat Duke. If they fail to do that, the game against North Carolina becomes the entire season. Lose both and the Terps will only be dancing if they win the ACC tournament.
* Len is being criminally misused by Mark Turgeon. If you think Indiana runs a weird offense that occasionally results in Cody Zeller not getting shots, you’d lose your mind watching with the way Len is used. He’s a 12-8 guy right now, but it should be closer to 18-10 like Mason Plumlee. How is Len only playing 26 minutes a game? How is he only getting 8.9 shots a game? And taking 4.1 free throws a night? Get him the ball down low, and let the 7-footer go to work. The guy is a Top 10 draft lock.

Why are they coming to the Big 10 again?

Ironically the same things Duke fans were saying about Plumlee last season (averaged 11/9). Maybe he just needs another year.

I assumed perhaps foul trouble was the answer. But in looking at his game log, he’s only ended up with 4 fouls twice (17 mins. in each game) and fouled out of two others (30 mins. and 26 mins.)

This is modern college basketball. When was the last time a true big was properly used? Roy Hibbert?
It is a guard-dominated game – for numerous reasons – and this generally has caused the big man to be marginalized, unless you have a particularly good coach, or transcendant big man.

Blame Pe’shon. He took a gigantic step back this season.

Does this explain why there are so many posts about Randy Edsall? I always assumed duffman’s wife went to Maryland or something. Because there are a lot of posts about Randy Edsall.

Len’s numbers aren’t as good as they should be because he isn’t as good as he should be. As brilliant as he can be sometimes, he can stay cold for an entire game, and his hands need work. I just don’t think Turg fully trusts him, with good reason. And keep in mind one of the big reasons that he’s a projected lottery pick is because this year’s draft stinks.

KU is a nine point favorite over KSU tonight. That is insane. KU can’t score and KSU can.

PG play is the problem. They have a lot of young talent but no one who consistently handle the ball. Allen is streaky at best. Wells shows flashes of being an elite player but is a turnover machine. Faust is probably there best answer handling the ball but he is a natural wing.
The main problem for Len is that they are doing a terrible job of feeding him the ball. The entry passes have been horrific since the start of ACC play. He also should be blamed because when he does get the ball in the post he is usually doubled or tripled immediately but he tries to shoot instead of kicking it out to a shooter.
I am almost praying that this team absolutely collapses down the stretch and Len’s draft stock plummets so much that he stays one more year.

A good big man doesn’t mean what it used to. I recommend your predictions change with the times.

You need to face it – they’re not getting chances. The fact they are 5-6 in the ACC and 1-4 vs. Top 50 speaks for itself.

they’re not getting in**

couldnt happen to a nicer coach. the way he whined during his stint at college station was always annoying.

Agree wholeheartedly. I am glad he is failing because his name is always mentioned as a potential successor to Self when Self leaves. And Turgeon is a whiny brat.

Gary Williams with Turgeron’s players. Cannot stop thinking about this.
Turgeron is a terrible coach. Good recruiter, terrible Xs and Os guy. His team is getting worse, not better. There’s no one in the country who can stop Len, yet he touches the ball half as much as he should. It’s depressing watching this group fart their way around a court. No PG play, dumb offense, terrible shot selection, bad overall look.

Juan Dixon’s family has shown more life than the Terps of late.

“My Terps”?
Ddn’t you go to JMU?
You are a traitor to the CAA, dude.

Give me a fucking break, TBL.
Not entirely. Having been to or watched every game this season, he’s just not as good as people think he is, or he should be. The ability is there, but he checks out and gets pushed around by players half his size and ability.
But the real culprit is the complete lack of a PG, which is part of what leads to our insane amount of TOs. The other part is just being reckless and turnover-prone, but not having a distributor is incredibly frustrating and leading to guys playing out of position. The talent level for the Terps is there, but barring a huge run (and beating Duke), it’s maybe to the NIT for us.
