Paterno Family Response to Freeh Report Shockingly Exonerates Joe Paterno
The Paterno family commissioned its own investigation of the Freeh Report and issued a 238-page response today. Not surprisingly, the response criticized the salient findings of the Freeh Report and absolved Joe Paterno of any blame in Penn State’s handling of Jerry Sandusky’s child sex abuse.
There is no evidence that Joe Paterno deliberately covered up known incidents of child molestation by Jerry Sandusky to protect Penn State football or for any other reason; the contrary statements in the Freeh report are unsupported and unworthy of belief. As described in more detail below, there is no reason to believe that Joe Paterno understood the threat posed by Jerry Sandusky better than qualified child welfare and law enforcement professionals. There is no evidence that Joe Paterno conspired with Penn State officials to suppress information because of publicity concerns. And Joe Paterno’s testimony before the grand jury in 2011 was truthful.
You can view a summary of the report here and read the full report here. ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. provides an analysis here. Louis Freeh released a statement in response to the response. He defends the procedure and findings of his investigation.
I respect the right of the Paterno family to hire private lawyers and former government officials* to conduct public media campaigns in an effort to shape the legacy of Joe Paterno.
However, the self-serving report the Paterno family has issued today does not change the facts established in the Freeh Report or alter the conclusions reached in the Freeh Report…
Mr. Paterno was on notice for at least 13 years that Sandusky, one of his longest serving assistants, and whose office was steps away, was a probable serial pedophile. Mr. Paterno was aware of the criminal 1998 investigation into Sandusky’s suspected child sexual abuse. Indeed, the evidence shows that Mr. Paterno closely followed that case. Later, in 2001, another one of his assistants, Mr. McQueary, directly reported to Mr. Paterno that Sandusky was sexually abusing a young boy in Mr. Paterno’s Penn State football locker room. The evidence shows that Mr. Paterno purposefully ignored this evidence.
Both the Freeh Report and the Paterno response are interpretations of imperfect information. The Freeh Report was tailored to reach a logical conclusion. The Paterno response was tailored to reach a specific conclusion. It is hard to see the polar opinions on this matter softening.
Multiple parties spent millions. The truth rests with the deceased man who, as Freeh notes, declined to cooperate with the investigation.

So it’s like off-setting penalties in football?

Given that, you’d better preserve his legacy, so you can rent it out later to make up the cash burned in this silly effort.

He, his family, and their lawyers did as little as possible to co-operate with the Freeh Report, but then bitch about it being inaccurate. Well, it’s your own damn fault then. They knew it could be a disaster for them, and they should have had their fingers in that pie from the very start. Instead by this point, it doesn’t matter, and the only impression I get out of all this is that Paterno at his age, didn’t have a firm grasp on everything that was going on in the situation. Way to protect your legacy Joe.

The freeh report was absolutely designed to reach a tailored conclusion: only four people had an role in this, nothing to see here, move along.

Soused not being drunk at 9am is more shocking..

Well thats one way to look at it.
Now consider a scenario were both reports are fatally flawed approximations of reality which flawed report would the media and public at large be more likely to falsely believe to be an accurate depiction of events? Well its the one that provides us with heads to roll and hang because tragedies with few parties to blame or narratives to explain why they can or could’ve been prevented in the past and future caters to the human thirst for both retribution and sense of control.
We want to believe these tragedies are 100% preventable such that if they occur anyway its because some people allowed them to happen which is easier to rectify than alternative explanations.

Incorrect – Paterno never declined to speak with Freeh as far as is reported by Freeh. Freeh noted 4 individuals (Sandusky, Schulz, Curley and Courtney) who flat out declined at advice of counsel, and a couple others who were “off limits” per the AG (Harmon, McQuery, etc.).
Paterno was dead for the bulk of the investigation.

Freeh is changing his tune. From the original report here’s the people specifically noted to have declined interviews with his team:
Curley, Courtney, Schulz, Sandusky, the prosecutor in 1998, the 2nd Mile director – that’s it, that’s the list.
Now, today, he stated:

Freeh is a gigantic POS. He’s getting angry and defensive, changing his story left and right. Never a good look. Especially if you have the facts on your side.
February 10th, 2013 at 6:57 PM
WHY IS THE FREEH REPORT LOGICAL? ISN’T IT JUST AS LIKELY THAT IT WAS TAILORED TO REACH A SPECIFIC CONCLUSION. AFTER ALL IT WAS PAID FOR BY THE PEOPLE WHO FIRED JOE PATERNO.WHO WERE LOOKING FOR JUSTIFICATION OF THEIR ACTIONS.
“The truth rests with the deceased man who, as Freeh notes, declined to cooperate with the investigation.”
Why do you think the Freeh report is all fact while anything the Paterno family would pay for is tainted?
Consider this:
If Louis Freeh is willing to lie about something as basic as whether or not someone agreed to be interviewed, what else did he lie about in the “independent” Freeh Report?
February 10th, 2013 at 7:01 PM
The only people who look more shaky than Freeh and this report is the NCAA for using this flawed report as a basis for the PSU sanctions.

Sad.

Penn State fans are like a cult. Dan Wetzel said it best in his column today. If Joe Paterno knew about the 1998 investigation, then his lack of further action in response to the McQuery incident is indefensible. For you to believe Paterno didn’t know in 1998, you would have to have a virtual perfect storm of illogical conclusions based upon the evidence presented. Penn State fans: It’s not your fault. No one blames. But you seriously gotta stop defending Paterno like it’s your own personal legacy on the line here. The man clearly did not do what he should have done to protect those kids. Period.

The comments in this post have changed my mind; Joe never new ANYTHING and Penn State is NOT at fault in ANY way, hell I bet those little kids were lying also, how can get Sandusky a retrial or better yet a pardon.

Would it be too much to ask for the name “paterno” never to be seen in print or on the ‘net ever again?

This is America and the news and sports media doesn’t get to decide whether Joe Paterno gets tried in the court of “Public Opinion”! They are entitled to their opinions, as are those people who want to know the truth about what happened and who is responsible for allowing these hideous actions to occur.
I have read the entire Paterno report and agree that… it has a clear agenda, so did the Freeh report. The Freeh report was structured so the evidence would draw attention away from the school, BOT and the Governor of PA and place responsibility on two middle managers and an aging coach! While the Paterno report attempts to point out inaccuracies in the Freeh report and exonerate Joe Paterno. Frankly, if someone made inaccurate statements about any of their fathers, I believe they would do what they could to set the record straight!
Most of these reporters are very good writers and I enjoy their pieces! However, I think if professional news and sports writers want to comment on this situation, they should complete their own investigation first, then write their piece based on their OWN findings, not their opinions. I really could care less about their opinions, as I’m sure they care very little for mine.
I’m not even a BIG Penn State fan and I smell something funny here. Now we all have discovered that PA’s current governor, Tom Corbett, who was the Pennsylvania Attorney General involved in the initial investigation of these allegations, may have sat on information and/or allegations rather than vigorously continue the investigation in to these sexual abuse cases. By doing nothing, Governor Corbett may have jeopardized the lives of additional children. If he had vigorously investigated these allegations, perhaps additional children may have been spared the pain and humiliation of sexual abuse. As you may expect, I’ve waited for some well respected news and sports reporters, to pursue the Governor with the same vigor and indignation that they pursued Joe Paterno, but to my surprise there was only silence.
Joe Paterno, a football coach, was fooled by a master manipulator (who also fooled trained professionals and law enforcement) and immediately informed his superiors when he heard of the allegations, and everyone rushes to judgment that he should have done more and he gets fired!
Governor Corbett, an attorney and the AG at the time of the allegations, may have sat on this information, never arrested the alleged perpetrator who went on to commit more atrocities, and no one is screaming for his dismissal…
Where are all those talking heads on the news and sports shows who crusaded for the firing of Joe Paterno? Are they afraid to challenge the Governor of PA? Are they afraid to pursue Governor Corbett? Don’t they want to know the complete story? Don’t they want to report the complete story to their readers?
FOX Sports, ESPN and most major networks have egg on their faces and are now trying to deflect the questions posed by the Paterno report by more speculation. Fox Sports, ESPN and the major networks, should do their own, indebt investigation and set the record straight, once and for all. Even if they have to admit that they were wrong (and perhaps their not!!!), no one will ever know the truth except those idiots who challenge anyone who pursues the complete truth, and then makes accusations That anyone who challenges the Freeh Report, is supporting child molestation!
Stop following the music… Investigate and if Paterno is involved, he should be shamed! If he’s not, eat crow and make your apologies. All of these news and sports outlets, talk about morality; if they believe that Joe Paterno traded his morality to save his football team, then they should do their due diligence, be better than Joe Paterno, do your job!
I don’t expect any of these news and sports outlets to respond to this post because that’s what Men do; cowards hide behind empty words and win awards by bringing down icons….
Draw your own conclusions….
