Urban Meyer Was Right, Big Ten Recruiting is Terrible
Urban Meyer landed an awesome recruiting class for Ohio State. He then made headlines, by pledging to address the Big Ten’s poor recruiting performance with his colleagues. He’s arrogant. He’s also dead right. We don’t see Meyer pointing fingers, mentioning names or presenting a Powerpoint on social media at conference meetings, but someone should.
The Big Ten has fallen behind the SEC. That’s clear. We could point to the national rankings or the demographic shift to the south, but the problem extends deeper. The Big Ten isn’t competing for kids in national recruiting hotbeds, but a bigger problem is they are getting beaten for talented recruits in their own states.
We looked at three Big Ten states within the Big Ten footprint: Illinois, Indiana and Pennsylvania over the past three years. Some of the numbers are startling.
The Big Ten did not land one of the Rivals’ Top 3 recruits in Illinois, Indiana, or Pennsylvania in the 2013 class. Six of the nine signed with SEC schools.
Discounting Ohio State and Michigan, the number of Big Ten four-star or better recruits from those three states (8) barely eclipses the number signed by the SEC (7).
The past three signing classes produced 67 rivals four or five-star recruits from Illinois, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Just 31 (46 percent) signed with the Big Ten.
Notre Dame is in Indiana, though it is still technically a Big Ten state. The Big Ten has gone 1/15 on top three kids out of Indiana since 2009. That one signing was by Ohio State. The last time Purdue or Indiana signed a top three kid in state was in 2005.
Even when second-tier Big Ten teams do well in state, they don’t do that well. Penn State signed 7 out of the 11 four-star Pennsylvania kids in 2010. That’s a nice haul, but they were beaten for three of the top four. The one five-star prospect, Shariff Floyd, signed with Florida.
The Big Ten must expand its recruiting base to compete. Part of that is competing for top kids in Big Ten states.

He then made headlines, by pledging to address the Big Ten’s poor recruiting performance
But, when he left FL, didn’t he say there were a lot of bad things going on in college football? Did he not mention the recruiting process as part of that problem?
Please correct me if I’m wrong.

O-VER-SIGN-ING clap clap clapclapclap
February 8th, 2013 at 2:03 PM
If they are going to compete with the SEC, then they need to start over-signing. Of course, this is a slimy bullshit practice that fits Urban and Saban perfectly.
Better yet, the NCAA should outlaw over signing.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:27 PM
He’s such a cunt. Publicly he says, “we gotta get better.” Privately he’s telling recruits the rest of the coaches suck, their teams suck, fellow players suck and that the recruit should never play there. In short, fuck this dickface right in the ass.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:28 PM
Urban wasn’t an oversigner, actually. He won two titles without doing it.
/of course then he quit when he didn’t have a QB worth a shit
February 8th, 2013 at 3:29 PM
Husker is Soused? Soused is Husker? Oh my God!!!
February 8th, 2013 at 3:30 PM
Another thing you can do is lie to your recruits and tell them that Todd Grantham isn’t interviewing for NFL jobs. That works too.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:31 PM
well, duh urban. the big 10 is horrid trash.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:32 PM
Not well enough, actually. Though he told Bellamy he was going to speak with NFL teams.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:33 PM
The past three signing classes produced 67 rivals four or five-star recruits from Illinois, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Just 31 (46 percent) signed with the Big Ten.
Do this same thing for Florida. What are the percentage of the seemingly endless supply of FL 4/5 stars that sign out of state? It’s probably pretty high, too. Then again, I guess the sranglehold UF-FSU-Miami had on college football 20 years ago has also evaporated for the most part so I guess I’m not making much an argument here.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:35 PM
Les Miles again shows why he is no Saban.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:36 PM
Exactly. Illinois, Indiana, N’Western, Purdue, Rape U, Maryland, Rutgers, Iowa and Minnesota. That leaves MICH and OSU…primetime schools who are recruiting well, and then NEB and MSU, both of whom have crazy people coaching them and then Wisconsin, who I think will continue to be the third best program. It’s not a shock that the league is as shitty as it is. The players aren’t in their backyards, so you have to sell harder. The teams don’t invest like SEC teams do (you can argue that’s a good thing from an academic standpoint). When you think about ARK stealing a coach of the 3-time defending B10 champion, that should tell you all you need to know.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:36 PM
Todd Grantham is an esteemed football mind now apparently. And people are calling Urban as asshole? Grantham tried to railroad Romeo Crennel, one of the nicest guys ever, and got himself a oneway ticket to the minors.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:37 PM
Also, can TBL find another Urban pic? That one up top has gotten mighty stale.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:38 PM
Even if the B1G dominated Mich, Ohio, Ill, Penn, that isn’t enough to compete with the SEC. Throw in NJ and MD, still not enough
February 8th, 2013 at 3:38 PM
Probably the only way LSU could get worse at the offensive coordinator spot is to hire the guy that was singlehandedly holding back Joe Flacco from elite eliteness.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:38 PM
How many 4- and 5-star kids live below the mason-dixon line? Or out West? Add those two regions together and you probably get 80% of kids with those rankings. It’s tough to get a kid to leave his home and go far away to play football, especially when your program sucks.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:38 PM
MSU, NEB, PSU need to do a bit better. THe PSU downturn is temporary. Iowa and one the Maryland/Rutgers can rise up every once in a while too and win a bowl game.
The rest of the conference can be a dumpster fire and it dont mean shit.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:39 PM
Grantham is insane. But apparently he can connect with 17-year-old kids. I don’t get it, but I don’t think he’ll be in Athens much longer. He wants to be an NFL DC in badly.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:40 PM
GET IT TOGETHER BIG TEN
February 8th, 2013 at 3:40 PM
One of him quitting on his team would be nice. Or the one quitting on his family after one whole year maybe?
NEB is a sleeping giant. Too bad they’re coach is one gigantic Ambien pill. They’re fucked as long as he’s there.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:40 PM
There is not a single reference to Ohio fans being the worst in this entire post. You’re slipping, Duff-man
February 8th, 2013 at 3:41 PM
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Cam Cam’ron to LSU.

I love that photo. Use it for every OSU thread as far as I care.

Hi Maryland and New Jersey.

I would back up a mack truck at Chris Petersen’s door and see what happens. Then I’d go hire Scott Frost.

Sure.

Can we discuss the Eagles hiring Pat Schurmur and the epic Billy Davis hire? PANIC!!!!!!!!

I think they’re a relic, but define sleeping giant. Top 20 program in your opinion?
February 8th, 2013 at 3:44 PM
SC and Texas will be in hot pursuit if they’re smart. If so, NEB stands zero chance

Do either of those schools have medical facilities for special needs children?

February 8th, 2013 at 3:45 PM
They need one coach who can both coach and recruit and they’ll be back in the top-15 on the reg. Pelini does both at an average clip and they’re top-25 team now. The city/state/fans will invest to get it done. Now they’re in a state of purgatory. Pelini will win 8-10 games a year and nothing more, but it’s hard to fire a dude who wins 9 on average each year. He’ll have to leave on his own, though that is possible.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:45 PM
So the problem isn’t recruiting, it’s that there aren’t enough good players in big ten states
February 8th, 2013 at 3:45 PM
What the fuck is wrong with them up in Morgantown North? I thought they let anybody go to school up their in East Lansing? Shouldnt they be able to get all the borderline qualifiers? C’Mon! You’re the home of Plaxico Burress!
February 8th, 2013 at 3:46 PM
Probably ruin his lawn, for one.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:46 PM
All depends on who has an opening first. Mack could win 9-10 next year and stay. Kiffin may last two more years as well. They could find themselves on the outs. I agree NEB can’t hang if each job is open at the same time though.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:46 PM
And steroids, don’t forget the steroids.
/or a plane crash
February 8th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
True, and I think a Brinks truck would be more effective
February 8th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
The Big Ten has always been the Big 2 and the little 8 ever since southerners decided winning football games was more important than being overtly racist to people good at football.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
Yup. OSU and MICH can pull nationally. So can NEB, but not nearly at the same clip. OSU and MICH gobble up the local studs and then branch out, leaving the scraps for the rest of the B10.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
keeping it classy I see.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:48 PM
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Cam Cam’ron to LSU

The thought of this sickens me, although that would mean they had a really good year in 2013

I would back up a mack truck at Chris Petersen’s door and see what happens
Probably ruin his lawn, for one.
True, and I think a Brinks truck would be more effective

Plane crash full of money. Best recruiting tool ever.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:49 PM
OSU, Mich, and PSU are the programs that can recruit enough locally to be consistently good
February 8th, 2013 at 3:50 PM
Say they go 9-4 in 2013. Does he stay?
February 8th, 2013 at 3:50 PM
There’s also the fact that more sports exist in the north. And pretty much every black person has family in the south so there isn’t any homesick/culture shock/whatever keeping them from leaving for warmer pastures.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:51 PM
Technically that means MSU could as well if they landed some stud recruiter, but I agree with your point. All other schools have to branch out. The farther you get away from home, the harder it is to get kids to come to your school. That’s why having a USC history, or Oregon facilities helps so much.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:52 PM
I like this one
February 8th, 2013 at 3:52 PM
Agree. But Hokey’s last class was mostly Midwest and a couple East Coast kids.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:53 PM
I think the sheer arrogance of what Meyer is doing is just so fitting. It’s not like these staffs aren’t trying to land great recruits. They just have a tougher product to sell. And when their schools don’t spend the going rate on assistants, this is what happens.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:53 PM
If that is 9-3 in the reg season, probably, but I’d still want him out. Depends on recruiting class too. Another trashy one like this year should definitely get him fired, a top three class is another story
February 8th, 2013 at 3:55 PM
When you can only sign 15 it’s tough to land a top-3 class.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:55 PM
I love the energy Mark D’Antonio and Kirk Fertentz bring. They have the sizzle that makes kinds want to zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz wait, what?
February 8th, 2013 at 3:55 PM
That is one field on which Meyer cannot possibly compete with the Hoke Monster.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:55 PM
That’s his plan. Not sure I agree with it, but his last two classes have been good on paper.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
True, I should say a really good class that fits needs (both lines) rather than top 3. This class had three linemen total. SC historically wins through dominance at the LOS
February 8th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
At least the schools are starting to spend more on recruiting.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
Whoever is in charge of doing so, count me as someone who doesn’t give a shit about Urban and his ‘unethical’ or ‘arrogant’ recruiting style.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:58 PM
If he can land classes like this last one then you should be happy as hell. His OL classes the past two years are so badass. If Morris and Green hit (RBs bust like whoa, so who knows) Mich will be really good in 2015.
February 8th, 2013 at 3:58 PM
Why not? It is open season in the Northeast with PSU down
February 8th, 2013 at 3:59 PM
Yet they fired Solich, who averaged 9-3.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:00 PM

That’s amazing. What’s profound is how Hoke is huge and that guy with the pan of ribs is twice as wide as Hoke. That said, those ribs look damn tasty.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:00 PM
And it was blasted from coast to coast.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:00 PM
Because Urban’s getting the better players from the South and Texas. And the SEC has already started to pounce on the North East.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:01 PM
Just stay away from NC. UGA loves them some NC.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:01 PM
Oh, I’m happy with it. I’m just not sure putting little effort into CA, TX, FL, etc… is a good strategy.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:02 PM
Michigan’s savior the past 4 years was from Florida.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:03 PM
I know Florida had a nice pipeline with Addazio, but who in the SEC is hitting it hard now?
February 8th, 2013 at 4:03 PM
MICH is still offering kids from GA and other southern states, but that’s a long haul to get a kid to leave the South for Michigan, and Southern boys don’t like to leave mama, and more importantly, mama doesn’t like them to leave.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:05 PM
No clue. I was curious about that comment as well. Maybe SoCar?
February 8th, 2013 at 4:05 PM
Forcier was the QB Denard’s freshman year.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:06 PM
They like them some Daddy Urban. I’ll be curious to see how many kids he pulls from GA in 2014.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:07 PM
He’ll rarely get more than 3, but the battle for Raekwon (sp?) what’s his name, the ILB, will be huge. OSU leads early, but UGA and Bama are going after him big time.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:08 PM
UGAs class will be smaller next year (20ish) but they are in much better shape at this time than they were at the same time last year.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:10 PM
Raekwon is a huge target. So is flipping DeShaun Watson.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:11 PM
UGA offered him recently. They rarely go for dual threat kids, too. Though they’ve run zone-read with both Stafford and Murray in the past. He’s perfect for Clemson’s system, though. Gonna be fun trying to flip him I’m sure.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:13 PM
OSU will have a small class too. Could be as low as 14-16. But I’m guessing there will be some “attrition” and it will actually be about 20-21.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:14 PM
it’s a pretty long way from south FL to Arkiesaw.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:14 PM
Who’s really trying to compete? Just Ohio State, Michigan and insert surprising Big Ten team. The other schools will gladly take their equal share of the TV revenue
February 8th, 2013 at 4:14 PM
Same with UGA. I suspect some kids will transfer or get pinched for something that gets them booted. I think Alec Ogletree’s brother (decent FB) will be done soon for his 3rd positive test for weed. Fucking idiot.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:14 PM
NEB thinks this is one of the dumbest things ever said.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:29 PM
That was a mistake, they should have been up there. But the rest is definitely true. Do you think Illinois is really losing sleep over their recruiting rankings? Iowa at this point? Indiana? Northwestern? They’ll just continue hoping they have that surprising team once once ever three or so years. Why spend 500,000+ on recruiting when you can go the cheap route and enjoy the fruits of OSU and Michigan’s labors?
February 8th, 2013 at 4:35 PM
I forgive you and agree with your point.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:37 PM
Weird. 2 states that have been traditionally in the bottom half of the Big Ten and one that has had 2 clases hurt by a scandal/sanctions didn’t have good recruiting classes.
February 8th, 2013 at 4:38 PM
*2 classes
February 8th, 2013 at 5:24 PM
Meyer – a colossal phony – has a point. The computers will give OSU no credit for crushing the Indianas of the world year in and out. It’s a 2-game schedule for OSU. They are the Boise State of the Big Ten – it gets you nothing.
February 12th, 2013 at 6:17 PM
That’s one of the reasons Ohio State has decent seasons, almost every year – they get some of the better talent, in the area, while the other schools get inferior or what’s left of the talent. When Ohio State plays an SEC team, they get the wood laid to them. OSU went undefeated, last year, by playing their usual weak schedule. Still, they should have lost a couple of those games. Meyer couldn’t compete with Bama, LSU or South Carolina, in recruiting, after Dan Mullen and Charlie Strong left and he was at one of the premiere SEC schools. The only way he will compete at OSU is to turn a blind-eye to the cheating, just like Bobby Bowden did, when he realized that he wasn’t getting the talent that Miami and FLorida were. It got Bowden one final NC; however, it all came unravelled when the poop hit the fan and FSU’s dirty deeds were exposed. The same thing will happen at OSU, because Meyer is desperate to show that he is a great coach, instead of a coach who was just in the right place, at the right time, with 2 very talented coordinators. I am certain I speak for most Gator fans, we are so thankful that Meyer is at OSU and that we have Muschamp. Meyer would have never got on Saban’s level and Meyer knew it. That’s why his esophagus went crazy, after Saban beat him in the SEC championship game, with less talent.
February 12th, 2013 at 6:43 PM
I read ignorant comments like this, all the time, from fans of Big 10 schools:
If they are going to compete with the SEC, then they need to start over-signing. Of course, this is a slimy bullshit practice that fits Urban and Saban perfectly.
Better yet, the NCAA should outlaw over signing.
Only a few SEC teams practiced over-signing; they are Bama, Georgia and Arkansas. The other schools, like Florida, have had a policy against over-signing. That’s why the SEC passed the new rule which prohibits schools from signing more that 25, unless they count some early enrollees back to the previous class. Either way, the recent SEC rule change prohibits a school from going over the 85 limit, period. The main offender, when it came to over-signing, was Alabama, Nick Saban will take advantage of every loophole he can find, that gives him an advantage. His latest was forcing nonproductive players to take medical scholarships or transfer to smaller schools. Saban cleaned his roster of players who had no chance of developing in to the player they were recruited to be.
So, you ignorant people, making such an ignorant comment, educate yourself on the facts and quit trying to make the SEC look like a bunch of rogue schools. You’ve gotten you clock cleaned by us and you just need to own up to reality – SEC football rules and will continue to do so.
