Between Ryan Braun’s Urine and the PED-Infested Miami Baseball Program, Does Anyone Think the Brewers’ Outfielder is Clean?
Ryan Braun, Dec. 2011: Someone leaked his failed October urine test to ESPN. The tests (ESPN reported he failed two) showed he had excessive testosterone in his system. Busted. Looking at a 50-game suspension. But Braun got lucky – the guy who collected his urine thought Fed Ex was closed on Saturday, so the urine sat in his fridge all weekend, and Braun escaped on a technicality. Did Braun cheat to recover from an injury? We’ll never know.
Ryan Braun, February 2013: Yahoo reveals that Ryan Braun’s name is in Anthony Bosch’s black book. Braun says he simply paid Bosch as a “consultant” during his appeal for the positive test. Right. A week prior, the Miami New Times dropped an explosive report linking A-Rod, Gio Gonzalez, Nelson Cruz and others to steroids/PEDs, and Bosch was their supplier. Of all the consultants in the country, Braun just happens to reach out to the guy who was allegedly injecting A-Rod?
Today: The New York Times writes about the Miami baseball program and how the school’s strength and conditioning coach is all over Bosch’s black book. Ryan Braun played for Miami from 2003-2005. From the Times: “Two of Braun’s Miami teammates, including one who was his roommate, were tied to the clinic in a report by Yahoo Sports on Tuesday.”
Milwaukee’s Spring Training begins February 23rd in Phoenix. That should be fun.

To be fair to TBL, the guy did get away on a technicality.

Does anyone really fucking care? Aside from media/blogger gasbags? This is so dumb.

The only thing not making me 100% on Braun is that his name isn’t under any PEDs like the other names for the regimens the guys were on so it makes the accounts receivable story plausible. Not necessarily true, but I can see how its possible given that.

February 7th, 2013 at 1:18 PM
why do you think the MLB media looks into HGH, but NFL reporters dont?
February 7th, 2013 at 1:18 PM
Klosterman made a good point yesterday in Simmons’s podcast that fairly soon players will be able to make genetic modifications to themselves that are undetectable. With this and other advances that are sure to come, a lot of people need to start realizing that this is just a transition period that will have to eventually end with the acceptance of performance-enhancing measures because they are not going to go away.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:18 PM

February 7th, 2013 at 1:20 PM
I may be a gasbag, but I actually care a bit.
I live in a pollyana world when it comes to baseball, and would like records, stats, etc. to be on as even a footing as possible throughout the generations.
That said, I know it’s going on all over the place, and I would say that a lot more of it goes on in football, but we hear next to nothing about it.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:20 PM
This issue really seems to piss off baseball fans
Well, the PEDs piss off sports writers more than fans. I think that’s true in every sport. There is a large portion of baseball fans that really are sanctimonious about it but the much larger majority is just like any other fan base/Jay Cutler: DOOOOON’T CAAAARE!

February 7th, 2013 at 1:20 PM
Side note: It seems whoever takes over for Lane Kiffin once they shit can his ass will have a nice OL class to work with.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:20 PM
Why on earth would you “consult” someone running a shady aging clinic out of a shack?
Yeah, I would expect a MLB player to get a more qualified consultant. But this could be why there was a dispute to payment (I think Braun or someone for him said they felt the info provided was useless) and Braun’s name was in the book for money owed. I know I’m being Devil’s Advocate.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:21 PM
PEDs matter in baseball more because records are such an important part of the game.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:21 PM
The NFL doesn’t have a shitbag group of old fat white guys like the BBWAA that keeps a “doing it the right way” narrative going after years of willingly turning a blind eye.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:21 PM
I live in a pollyana world when it comes to baseball, and would like records, stats, etc. to be on as even a footing as possible throughout the generations.
So what do you do with the fact that blacks couldn’t, you know, participate until Jackie Robinson? Records are shit.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:22 PM
ive said this before…if anyone should be using PED’s it’s genetic freaks with access to the best medical care and consulting on the planet. drugs make shit better yo.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:22 PM
The test for which chain of custody couldnt be proven? Why go to the second step when all you’ve gotta do is point out the first.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:22 PM
Because one of the better NFL reporters, Glazer, probably supplies half the guys in the NFL with HGH.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:22 PM
why do you think the MLB media looks into HGH, but NFL reporters dont?
1. MLB media is beyond retarded
2. NFL media is lazy See: Peter King/Mike Florio
February 7th, 2013 at 1:23 PM
No, I definitely think there a potential legitimate excuse here. Braun is just seems to frequently be in close proximity to a lot of smoke. There’s gotta be a fire there somewhere.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:23 PM
Why WOULDN’T you go to someone who specializes in the exact thing Braun got caught doing?
February 7th, 2013 at 1:23 PM
Why on earth would you “consult” someone running a shady aging clinic out of a shack?
“Expert witnesses” on PEDs would tend to be guys whose life work is understanding how PEDs work. And it’s not like the lawyer would only go to this one guy. He probably consulted other guys that are equally shady because they are the experts in this field.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:23 PM
Because exposing rampant PED use in the NFL would further jeopardize it’s existence

I have to say, I really don’t care if all of them are using. Sports is entertainment and I am usually entertained. I’m tired of baseball being the only sport that gets talked about in regards to PED’s. The one sport that requires so much skill that you almost never go right from high school/college to the majors is the only sport where PED’s matters? But the sports where you are clobbering people and banging bodies left and right, nobody blinks an eye at? Seriously, WTF?

He thinks people do so care about baseball records. Also, he’s seen The Big Lebowski. It is a popular film despite its poor box office.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:30 PM
Also sctrojans how excited are you about the NBA coming out today saying that HGH testing might start next year?
February 7th, 2013 at 1:31 PM
that’s not necessarily true…OLmen dont typically play as frosh and soph in college, and outside the freaks, the young ones usually struggle in their first cracks in the NFL where DLmen have WAY more technique and moves.
also…golf requires more skill than baseball, but you see young kids win all the time because golf’s the greatest sport/competitive activity in the entire world.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:31 PM
Not sure that has anything to do with skill.
Again, people care about PEDs more in individual ad record-intensive sports like cycling and baseball because there aren’t many moving parts. Some people can use PEDs in football, but so much goes into winning that even an entire team of roided freaks wouldn’t guarantee success.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:31 PM
Not excited at all. I’m pro PED, but the testing will likely be a facade, so we’re all good

But the ellipses indicate a dramatic pause to begin with. So that’s like 3 dramatic pauses in a row. After that many pauses nobody remembers what came before
February 7th, 2013 at 1:33 PM
The endless war between PEDs users and testing is one of the best ever examples of the Red Queen Theory. Users find a drug, testers develop a test, users find another drug, testers find another test. You have to run as fast as you can just to stay exactly where you are.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:33 PM

February 7th, 2013 at 1:38 PM
honestly, i still dont believe that steroids actually help in golf. not the debate, and there are other drugs that’d be more considered PED’s than roids in the game.

Yes, because if you’re on steroids, hitting a 98 MPH fastball is so much easier than just being a bigger, faster running back in the NFL. BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:39 PM
Baseball is a lot simpler, essentially a one-on-one game.
Like the way football was back when steroids worked. Now the players are too muscular and interconnected for drugs to do any good.

But Bosch’s notebooks do not link Gio Gonzalez to any banned substances. Everything he is mentioned with was legal.
He will probably be implicated when more details come out…but it bother’s me to see his name lumped in with the other guys who had much more incriminating evidence.

Oh, pkiguy is Nate.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:47 PM
If they did, I’d look more like Mark McGwire than Craig Stadler.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:48 PM
I wonder how alcohol would function as a supplement in golf. Say Furyk takes a nice double shot of JD before that duck hook, does that calm the nerves enough to put it in the fairway? Apply that to any of the guys who shoot 80 in a late Sunday major grouping
February 7th, 2013 at 1:49 PM
Not Jennifer Aniston at all. She’s not grinding on desks and shit. She’s just hot and dresses well.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:49 PM
That’s weigh-cess.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:49 PM
No chance. Football is too complex a game with too many moving, interconnected parts now for drugs to make a wholesale difference. Baseball is a lot simpler, essentially a one-on-one game.
I have a theory that the NFL will soon follow MLB’s strict enforcement of steroids. The more these lawsuits keep popping up, the NFL can’t ignore the fact that the use of PEDs is creating faster stronger players creating concussions. Is this the SOLE reason? No, but it is an easy way for the NFL to say that they are doing something to curb these concussions and perception is a big thing.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:49 PM
Ironically, McGwire is likely a better golfer than Stadler at this point
February 7th, 2013 at 1:50 PM
Jimenez smoking.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:50 PM
Plus it keeps people thinking that concussions are the problem, the NFL wins again

I have personal experience in this matter.
I can also safely say that three hits off some outstanding Humboldt product makes it very difficult to keep the cart on the cart path.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:52 PM
why is it a problem?
February 7th, 2013 at 1:52 PM
Yup, and Cabrera chain smokes like an Asian. Daly’s diet coke would seem to have the opposite effect. Wait…but he was drinking when he won majors. Consider my theory proven!
February 7th, 2013 at 1:52 PM
Yeah…that’s awesome.

February 7th, 2013 at 1:54 PM
Maybe. But nothing will change. The games will still be competitive. No one will have a wholesale advantage. There’s been a measurable decline in home runs, BA, and runs scored since steroid testing was implemented in baseball. Annual combined ERAs are down league wide.
Do you think a slower running back will suffer if he stops taking PEDs? No, because the defenders will also be smaller, slower and more fatigued. And much of a QB, RB, WR success is dependent on a thousand other factors: scheme, blocking, opponent, playcall, progressions, etc.
I know people like to pretend baseball is a super complex sport on the level of football, but its just not. Football has an exponentially larger number of interconnected activities taking place on every single play. Any one can dramatically affect success. PEDs dont provide enough of a difference to alter that complex an equation.

I found Nate!!
/Detective JMac…at least give me an internship at your firm. I’ll make copies.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:54 PM
No they do help in baseball. Because it is less complicated.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:55 PM
Dead on. My alcohol use to performance graph is a parabola. Pot use, an immediate downward trend
February 7th, 2013 at 1:55 PM
I know people like to pretend baseball is a super complex sport on the level of football, but its just not.
I know I do.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:55 PM
I should also add that I think a large majority of NFL players take PEDs. at least 75 percent.
February 7th, 2013 at 1:56 PM
What happened to that intern?
February 7th, 2013 at 1:56 PM
Spends too much time masturbating in the bathroom, I’d imagine.

Football, the sport most reliant on pure athleticism and strength, isn’t benefited by PEDs in a tangible way…my god in heaven

If Morris pans out and plays at all this year he might think twice. UGA is going after a stud next year. They don’t generally recruit dual-threat kids, but this guy is going to be awesome. Gotta get him away from Clemson first though.

PEDs matter in baseball more because records are such an important part of the game.
gag. sanctity of the game. unwritten rules, yada yada.
you talking records before PEDs, in the bennies era, or when blacks couldn’t play? pre-free agency or post? pre designated hitter or post? before saves became an ‘important’ stat?
February 7th, 2013 at 2:35 PM
I wonder how much of Internet sports arguments break down the lines of people who listen to sports talk radio versus those who don’t.
i listen to it a lot, whereas i watch sportscenter only for scores on the crawl mostly (gambler). i would never argue with what i learn from radio, but i certainly bring up subjects/stories that i hear

1. Don’t care if Braun is on steroids or not. Would like it if he gets suspended because it would help the Cardinals.
2. Athletes in all sports are using. Even TBL’s treasured NBA…even the ass clown Bill Simmons admitted as much in a recent article.
3. Christ, when is Opening Day so we can talk about something other than PEDs?
