Todd Helton Arrested for Driving Under the Influence [With Mugshot]
Todd Helton was arrested early this morning for DUI, according to the Denver Post. The team released a statement:
“We were extremely disappointed to learn that Todd was arrested this morning. This type of behavior is taken very seriously by our organization,” the team said in a statement released Wednesday morning. “We know that he clearly understands the seriousness of his poor decision, the harm that could have been inflicted on others and the embarrassment his mistake has caused to himself, his family, the Colorado Rockies organization and to Major League Baseball. Todd is taking full accountability for his actions with his family, his fans and the organization. The man we have grown to know has strong values that are grounded in his family and hard work. Todd clearly understands the severity of the situation.”
Helton is 39 years old, and returning for one final season. Not a great way to start the farewell tour. Sportswriters everywhere will now have to weigh his character, and Hall of Famers who were once popped for drug possession will have six years to determine if he merits inclusion in their club.

I presume the Rockies are still paying him $20 million, Dante Bichette $13 million, Larry Walker $25 million, Denny Naegle $25 million, Mike Hampton $30 million, and Ellis Burks and Eric Young $10 million each.
They will definitely have to unload Tulo.

Rockies are going to easily be one of the three worst teams in the NL this year and the worst in the NL West.

To the Sox, please and thank you

Tulo could be moved, but the price would be insanely high and would require a top SP prospect/young pitcher.
February 6th, 2013 at 3:41 PM
Looks like a slaughtered cow.
February 6th, 2013 at 3:41 PM
If you had to play for that terrible ownership, you might get drunk too.
February 6th, 2013 at 3:42 PM
Good lord, what happened to him? He looks about 50 pounds overweight.
February 6th, 2013 at 3:43 PM
only if he can play LF, RF, and 1B at the same time.
February 6th, 2013 at 3:43 PM
Guess he doesn’t drink Michelob Ultra.
February 6th, 2013 at 3:43 PM
Tulo isn’t going anywhere. Gonzalez is gone before Tulo.
/too lazy to look up his contract info vs. Tulo

Maybe we’ll leave come springtime
Meanwhile, have another beer
What would we do without all thses jerks anyway?
Besides, all our friends are here

Don’t forget David Nied.

Once again Helton disappoints on the road.
February 6th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
The Cubs and Marlins the other two?
February 6th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
Canseco.
February 6th, 2013 at 3:48 PM
Well done
February 6th, 2013 at 3:48 PM
CarGo has 5/66.3 left on his contract, Tulo has 9/154 left on his deal. CarGo will be traded first.
February 6th, 2013 at 3:49 PM
Marlins may not break 50 wins this year. Free Stanton!
February 6th, 2013 at 3:49 PM
Why are they trading anyone at all?
February 6th, 2013 at 3:49 PM
Take em both. Money be damned
February 6th, 2013 at 3:52 PM
The Rockies? Because they are not a good team at all. Their pitching is horrendous and only have a few good pieces. I could easily see 90+ losses.
February 6th, 2013 at 3:52 PM
You are showing a lot of faith in Ellsbury. I guess in a contract year that’s fair. I don’t hate any position, I just don’t think they are very good at any, and have little flexibility, with mediocrity locked in.
That said, Victorino lets JBJ develop. Just gotta wait it out a few years, and the Sox figured it was worth $50MM to get the bridge with a team that at least could be possibly competitive. It’s not my money.
February 6th, 2013 at 3:54 PM
well, at least i have faith in ellsbury this year. I mean, in an outfield of Nava/Gomes, Ellsbury, and Victorino, I have to believe in one person. I also am not looking forward to the good throws by Middlebrooks, Drew, and Pedroia get fucked up by Napoli
February 6th, 2013 at 3:55 PM
Bravo WWOS!
February 6th, 2013 at 3:55 PM
I don’t know their financial situation, but I don’t think trading controlled talent is the way to get better. I don’t think the blockbuster it would take to make them so much better is out there. Who is giving up a sure future ace for Gonzalez?
February 6th, 2013 at 3:56 PM
I’m laughing so hard, I stopped breathing.
February 6th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
do you turn purple if you stop breathing?
/not being raycess
February 6th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
Farrell was brought in basically to fix Lester (Buch will be ok if he’s healthy, IMO). It will largely come down to pitching. They should be 85 win team I’d think, and it’d take a lot of bad luck to end up below 80 the next two years. They need front-line pitching, and it’s just not available.
For any Red Sox fans… bookmark soxprospects.com and portlandseadogs.com. It’ll help.

February 6th, 2013 at 3:59 PM
The Rockies farm system has little to no upside pitching prospects of any kind (I’ve read the entire BA Top 30 for them), they have some OFs and a SS that could replace Tulo in a few years. That’s their strength in the farm. The team needs to be rebuilt in a bad way.
February 6th, 2013 at 4:00 PM
BTW… fuck the Cardinals and Carlos Martinez
Was a Boston signing which then got messed up because of birth certificate stuff (nothing really even shady though).

Nah, I turn red first, then more of an ashy grey. Stinks getting old, I guess.
February 6th, 2013 at 4:01 PM
thanks for Hanrahan!
February 6th, 2013 at 4:05 PM
You trade for young controlled guys that provide value like Mike Trout making the minimum this year. If Tulo is accurately/overpaid, or Gonzalez, even on a decent contract… that’s tough to trade your 2nd best guy for a couple of iffy prospects.
I like CarGo, and his contract. But who would trade what for him? Find me a trade that is worth it to the Rockies.
February 6th, 2013 at 4:06 PM
CarGo for Martin Perez, Leonys Martin and Cody Buckel.
February 6th, 2013 at 4:06 PM
I don’t think they gave much up, so whatever, but I’m not a fan of Hanrahan, and don’t think he’s tender-able, like the Yankees got away with Soriano.
February 6th, 2013 at 4:06 PM
Cargo for just about anyone currently on the Phillies roster
/mantis’d
February 6th, 2013 at 4:07 PM
well, he’s better than Melancon. I sure hope Aceves got his head on straight. Otherwise, they need him to GTFO
February 6th, 2013 at 4:08 PM
I do like the Uehara pickup for the bullpen.
February 6th, 2013 at 4:11 PM
Sounds reasonable Mantis, though I don’t know the prospects. Seems fair considering CarGo is good, but has some severe road-home splits (.735 vs 1.003 OPS)

Pirates in 5
… years will be even worse than they are now?
/are we supposed to finish that sentence?
February 6th, 2013 at 4:13 PM
Yep. Also, Chris Carpenter clearing waivers helped if he ever gets it going. I don’t think Stolmy or Fields or the hitters (Lin, Sands, DeJesus) have any chance to haunt them.
Stolmy is in his last option year, and had barely made it past high A. Enjoy that, Pirates. He’s the throwing version of Oscar Tejeda.
February 6th, 2013 at 4:14 PM
WWoS, you think Boston will trade one of the catchers this summer?
February 6th, 2013 at 4:28 PM
I don’t really like Lavarnway, never have. He’s made his rep largely on a couple good months. I really don’t know what Salty’s value is. To me, I’d think as a decent hitter with power, with pretty good defense at times, it should be high enough to get a return. I’d be fine with them keeping him and trading Lavarnway, or other way around, really, but I think Lavarnway’s ceiling is Salty’s present, with just a little worse defense and better plate discipline.
Either way, I think it’s Ross that is going nowhere.
February 6th, 2013 at 4:28 PM
But either one of those other guys could play himself out of Boston, good or bad.
February 6th, 2013 at 4:44 PM
lol Adams county jail sucks. Maybe he should stop doing shitty car commercials.
