Signing Day Recap: Ole Miss Makes Noise, Ohio State Matches Alabama, USC and Texas Drop Off At Finish
Signing Day has come and, for the most part, gone. Recruiting experts and message board creeps can now exhale, crack their knuckles and progress to a steaming, yet to be soiled batch of 16-year-olds. Here’s a rundown of a few major stories, not involving Twilight, Swag hats or moms on the lam.
Top Five: Seems crucial now, but ultimately meaningless. All of these teams did well for themselves. Here’s how the major services shake out, as of this writing.
Rivals: (1) Alabama (2) Ohio State (3) Florida (4) Notre Dame (5) LSU
ESPN: (1) Alabama (2) Florida (3) Ohio State (4) Notre Dame (5) Ole Miss
Scout: (1) Ohio State (2) Michigan (3) Alabama (4) UCLA (5) Notre Dame
247: (1) Alabama (2) Ohio State (3) Florida (4) Michigan (5) Notre Dame
MaxPreps: (1) Alabama (2) Ohio State (3) Notre Dame (4) Florida (5) LSU
Combining them: (1) Alabama (2) Ohio State (3) Florida (4) Notre Dame (5) Michigan
“The University of Ole Miss” Hugh Freeze reeled in an unprecedented class. He signed top overall recruit, DE Robert Nkemdiche. He also reeled in the top ranked OT Laremy Tunsil and the top ranked WR Laquon Treadwell. He inked Antonio Conner, a Rivals Top 100 safety sought by both Alabama and Mississippi State. He also added two of the nation’s top five JUCO players, DT Lavon Hooks and DB Nikolas Brassell. This class ranks 4th in the SEC according to Rivals. That’s their first top five in conference since Rivals rankings began in 2002 and just their second time finishing higher than eighth.
We knew Freeze could recruit. What remains to be seen is whether this is a one-year, Nkemdiche-induced blip or Ole Miss can build on this in coming years to alter the power balance in the SEC West. Presuming Arkansas and Auburn bounce back, things are looking very hairy for Dan Mullen, who could be in real trouble if the Bulldogs have a down year.
The Urban Difference… Urban Meyer wants to compete for BCS titles with Alabama. The best way to do that was to bring Alabama-level talent. Meyer had an exceptionally strong group, which he supplemented with a couple late coups on Signing Day. He landed five-star Georgia safety Vonn Bell, who many had signing with Tennessee. He also capitalized on Chip Kelly’s departure, flipping Dontre Wilson, a four-star running back committed to Oregon. Missouri running back Ezekiel Elliot was another solid signature.
If it is not here yet, a Big 12, Little 2 era is imminent. Michigan and Ohio State landed 36 four and five-star recruits. That is seven more than the rest of the Big Ten combined, including Maryland and Rutgers.
SEC Dominance… The SEC kicks ass. That starts on Signing Day. This cycle, the conference has compiled seven of the Rivals Top 12 classes and 13 of the Top 28 classes. The 13th team, Kentucky, stole a recruit from USC and would have the fourth best class in the Big Ten. Thirty-nine of the Rivals Top 100 thus far have ended up within the conference. Thirty of them are going to the SEC West alone. Despite losing out on a couple big names, the Alabama borg has incorporated 12 of the Rivals Top 80. Yikes.
SC Style… The positive spin for Lane Kiffin? USC has brought in a lot of high-end talent. Their 12-man class includes five five-star recruits and nine of the Rivals Top 62. The negative spin? They suffered a rash of decommitments, robbing them of some much needed depth, especially on the defensive line. Defensive ends Kylie Fitts and Torrodney Prevot left for conference rivals UCLA and Oregon respectively. Another defensive end Jason Hatcher left USC for Kentucky (Kentucky!). Five-star cornerback Jalen Ramsey also left for Florida State. This class is not bad, considering the Trojans’ uncertain circumstances. It is not great, considering USC needs to be full and flawless through the sanction years to compete.
Backyard undefended… Georgia reeled in 32 total recruits and a Top-15 class, however they lost out on a number of big-time guys in Georgia. According to Rivals, Georgia signed just one of the Top 12 prospects in state, fewer than Ohio State had. Insert Mark Richt control joke here.
Belt Buckled… The malaise has hit recruiting. Texas brought in an un-Texas-like, 15-man class, ranked outside the Rivals Top 20. The Longhorns had five decommitments, equal to the number in their last five classes combined. They lost out on a mad squatting defensive line recruit to Baylor. Kids are choosing Baylor over Texas. This is the Longhorns’ worst ranked class in ratings and numbers since the 2006 crop. That group, though, included Colt McCoy, Jermichael Finley and Jamaal Charles and went to the BCS Title Game as seniors.

Nah, just an OSU New World Order.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:13 PM
Really like Michigan’s class. Urban cleaned up although he needs to realize a solid O-line is important in the midwest in November. Still can’t fathom how USC went from having one of the best classes ever to not even having the best class in L.A. or how Texas isn’t #1 each year with that recruiting base.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:16 PM
New World Order’s aren’t a heart palpation or NFL GM phone call away from ending.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:17 PM
O-Line will be a priority in 2014. Not really worried about it. Ed Warriner is one of the best coaches in the land. And speed on the edges and a dominant defense will win in November.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:18 PM
As will a good ball control offense.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:19 PM
Against MSU.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:20 PM
Kids are choosing Baylor over Texas.
Texas is in shambles.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:23 PM
Agreed.
Pray that they don’t get Saban. That would be the worst.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:23 PM
I see what you did there KC
February 6th, 2013 at 7:29 PM
Said it the other day when talking about TXAM , UT football is gonna suffer, period. Just fire Mack Brown and be done with it, dammit!
February 6th, 2013 at 7:30 PM
ALL IN!!!
February 6th, 2013 at 7:36 PM
ND’s class is from 14 different states + DC. That’s insane.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:38 PM
like, here’s the thing…i like osu’s class plenty. it’s fuckin’t great. but they had room on the depth chart, which is hella attractive to players like that.
but, and i can’t remember which service it was, they were listing their rankings with 5/4/3-stars and the average, and while average is great, bama had 5 5-stars to ohio state’s one…you can really only play so many players and bama’s hitting home runs and getting 5-stars to step in immediately.
sure, im excited, but i won’t buy that they, or pretty much any team, is on par with bama at their best. im not too sure it’s really that close either. if you trust the rankings, even if osu’s guys over the past two years season as expected, bama would still be considerably more stacked.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:38 PM
They should be top 5 every year simply thru osmosis.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:41 PM
February 6th, 2013 at 7:45 PM
As was pointed out earlier, 1/2 the 5* are going to be duds. FWIW – Jake Ryan was barely a 3* who’s only non-Michigan offers were from MAC schools.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:45 PM
LSU and ATM can compete
February 6th, 2013 at 7:46 PM
id agree on both of those…still think takes 75% of em tho.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:47 PM
It depends on the service. Players like Bosa, Marshall, Bell, Apple and Mitchell are rated 5′s on some services and not others. Highest 5 stars I saw for Bama was 6 on 247 and on Rivals and others its 4.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:47 PM
exactly…which is why it’s concerning that bama’s gotten so many more than the rest of the country the past three years.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:48 PM
This SC class is truly a disaster. Kiffin is hanging onto the job by a thread, and that was recruiting. The team is going to have to play extremely well this year for him to avoid being fired
February 6th, 2013 at 7:48 PM
and i feel like texas is responsible for most of those 5-stars failing, so im saying the stats are skewed.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:49 PM
And it’s not like those 5 stars are gonna play immediately for Bama, more like 2 or 3 years from now. Which is downright scary. Only a couple of the OSU recruits will get any PT beyond ST next year.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:50 PM
Some will. Yeldon and Cooper last year, for instance
February 6th, 2013 at 7:53 PM
the linemen and LB’s will get 2-3 years in a top notch S&C program and come out the giant monsters they’ve been producing. that’s what’s scary.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:54 PM
Of course. I’m not that familiar with Bama’s depth chart. Henry will get some touches at RB for sure.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:56 PM
Have faith in Mariotti. He’ll juice those boys up.
February 6th, 2013 at 7:57 PM
/no coop
February 6th, 2013 at 7:57 PM
Max Browne is the silver lining of SC’s class. He could be Kiffin’s saving grace if he’s the real deal
February 6th, 2013 at 7:59 PM
Agreed that Michigan and OSU have little pea brains.
Michigan wins 8 games (1 over a team above .500) and apparently a new era of dominance has arrived. Hail the victors.
February 6th, 2013 at 8:04 PM
Can’t wait for Hackenberg to shred the Michigan secondary.
February 6th, 2013 at 8:14 PM
1. Some southern cal guys are spewing that Kiffin is fired as soon as this class is signed… or de-crooted as it is turning out. A.K.A. tomorrow.
b. Jack Del Rio – your savior he ain’t. Sorry.
iv. EV is irish. And by ‘top notch S&C program’, spencer means steroids.
February 6th, 2013 at 8:17 PM
ND has a great class. Jealous they held onto Jaylon Smith. Prefer Vonn Bell over Max Redfield though.
February 6th, 2013 at 8:21 PM
That’s ok. In 2014, when Petersen is at SC and Kelly in the NFL, all will be forgotten
February 6th, 2013 at 8:29 PM
Player rankings are such bullshit. Several instances where a player is upgraded a star or downgraded based on the school he commits to.
February 6th, 2013 at 8:30 PM
Completely re-tooling their offense. Players were from RichRod’s era. i.e. – run first QB, smaller, quicker O=line, no concern for “D”, etc… 9 wins in 2013. Should improve on that in 2014 and beyond.
February 6th, 2013 at 8:35 PM
They better with that schedule. Hear anything about the Uconn game, WFS? Was hearing Mich may back out
February 6th, 2013 at 8:37 PM
Anywhere from 8 to 10 wins I’d say looking at that the skeezy.
February 6th, 2013 at 8:40 PM
They ain’t been the same since 2009.
/mullet’d
February 6th, 2013 at 8:40 PM
They beat ND, and they may be undefeated entering November.
Not trying to back out. Trying to get the game moved from UCONN’s stadium to Gillette.
February 6th, 2013 at 8:42 PM
Ridiculous. Uconn better back out before doing that
February 6th, 2013 at 8:44 PM
At Happy Valley is treacherous and Indiana may be a trap!
February 6th, 2013 at 8:45 PM
It’s UCONN’s home game and they have final say. Michigan is pushing it for the $$$. UCONN is wisely saying no for the home field advantage. If it’s in Foxboro, it’s a 50/50 split fan-wise.
February 6th, 2013 at 8:46 PM
I should mention that Uconn’s fat, potentially incompetent* AD played football for Michigan
*based on his handling of the Kevin Ollie contract situation
February 6th, 2013 at 8:48 PM
and Indiana may be a trap!
February 6th, 2013 at 8:48 PM
I was told the # of seats available at Rentschler to UM fans was a point of contention. Does Mich really travel that well to non-marquee non-conference games? Or do you think that’s a cover for the $ situation?
February 6th, 2013 at 8:48 PM
SC
Petersen ain’t coming to USC. Who are other possible candidates?
February 6th, 2013 at 8:56 PM
Why not? Logically, they are the favorite if he leaves Boise.
Tough to handicap the candidates, considering Carroll essentially came out of nowhere
Need an oline/dline focused coach with a physical philosophy. Not sure who off the top of my head, but probably someone from the NFL
February 6th, 2013 at 8:57 PM
Michigan has one of the largest living alumni bases in the country and has a ton of alumni in the DC to Boston area.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:02 PM
I don’t follow the non-BCS conferences closely enough to know the up and coming coaches. From BCS, Fitzgerald and Patterson are appealing. Maybe Gary Anderson if things start well at Wisconsin
February 6th, 2013 at 9:05 PM
Fitzgerald would be a great hire. Don’t know about his willingness to leave NW. Seems like if he was gonna leave the NFL would be interested. Or if Shaw bolts, he would be a great hire at Stanford perhaps.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:22 PM
Michigan reportedly offered him $3.5 million/year a while back and he turned them down. Considering he’s close to his family that lives in the Chicago area, it would take millions more than that to lure him away.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:26 PM
Would be curious to know if the Bears called him up before they hired that CFL dude.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:29 PM
Counterpoint: SC is the best job in college football
I don’t understand why people think Peterson is such an impossibility. It’s an unbelievably natural fit. He is from CA. His brand of football is a perfect fit. Boise has been built through CA recruiting, so those ties are already established. Brand new football facilities and deeeep pockets
February 6th, 2013 at 9:30 PM
Dear JMac,
21 pts, 9 assists, 5 rebounds tonight against your Knicks. Just wanted to let you know
Regards,
john Wall

KU and TCU are setting basketball back 100 years. TCU 10 KU 2 at 7:55 of the first half.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:34 PM
WHat the hell happened to KU this week? Its like they’ve stepped in superglue
February 6th, 2013 at 9:35 PM
Celtics now 5-0 without rondo.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:36 PM
the best, no. I can rattle off 5 – 10 great coaching jobs in college football and USC would be one of them, but I don’t think there’s a definitive “best”.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:37 PM
It’s one of the best jobs. I wouldn’t put it above Texas, Bama, OSU or maybe Florida. It’s right there with those though.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:39 PM
Know what? If bama, OSU, michigan, florida, etc arent great, stadium is still packed. if USC isnt great, stands are half-full.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:39 PM
WHat the hell happened to KU this week? Its like they’ve stepped in superglue
This has been coming for awhile. But tonight. Wow. Just awesomely horrific.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:40 PM
Also like to thank the 76ers for putting forth a stellar effort of 69 points in a 4 quarter NBA game.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:41 PM
If Kansas loses this game to TCU, they should fall out of the top 15. TCU may be the worst BCS conference basketball team along with USC
February 6th, 2013 at 9:43 PM
20-6 TCU with 3:50 in first half. Haha.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:44 PM
Best combo of recruiting base, lack of local competition, history, facilities, locale, and money. Nobody can dominate a conference as easily
OSU is #2 IMO
February 6th, 2013 at 9:45 PM
Does USC having great locale include the shitty part of LA where it’s located?
February 6th, 2013 at 9:46 PM
While true, it’s also immaterial
February 6th, 2013 at 9:48 PM
yo fellas. thanks if you’ve signed this. if you haven’t and it doesn;t clash with your values, i’d appreciate it
first board meeting was last night and looks as tho they may be re-figuring the language
don’t mean to be a pain
February 6th, 2013 at 9:49 PM
Texas is such a phenomenally overrated job. Too much competition in the SEC to stand out, and none of those schools has shown the ability to recruit nationally like SC.
OSU is a great job, no doubt. Slightly worse than SC IMO
February 6th, 2013 at 9:54 PM
It’s not in the South. Stanford, UCLA and Oregon are competing! Won’t argue with the rest except for ability to dominate a conference.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:58 PM
Yeah but OSU has lower standards and a more lunatic fan base.
February 6th, 2013 at 9:58 PM
Those schools ability to compete is strictly a function of SC being down. All are heavily dependent on CA recruiting. When SC is rolling, it chooses the top CA players, which is why I tout the recruiting base despite not being in the south (also SC has been able to snag some top defensive players from the south). Really, SC cherry picks the top players from AZ, NV, and CO, along with the west coast when it has a real coach
February 6th, 2013 at 10:04 PM
Lower standards? Same standards as Michigan. Get off your soap box. Agree with the lunatic fan base. Michigan’s is the same though.
SC
Don’t compare California, AZ, NV and CO with the South players. Yes, a lot of extremely skilled players come from the West Coast. But the best of the best that go to the NFL on a more consistent come from the South.
February 6th, 2013 at 10:05 PM
Another point on Peterson…I could see him getting PAID if his agent pits SC and Texas against each other properly after this season
February 6th, 2013 at 10:14 PM
Ohio state has standards?
February 6th, 2013 at 10:18 PM
Yeah, the recruits have to at least be able to read. All kidding aside, there have been plenty of dudes they can’t get in. B1G has all these stupid academic rules…
February 6th, 2013 at 10:19 PM
If spam emails were real, today would be my lucky day. Millions of dollars coming from Nigeria, and sluts from Serbia want to chat.
February 6th, 2013 at 10:20 PM
My attempted rebuttal comment was eaten, let’s see if this gets posted
February 6th, 2013 at 10:22 PM
Success! Vlad, I’m not comparing the west to the south. CA is as good a recruiting state as any though, and SC builds it’s base there. Then they add another five or so blue chippers from OR, WA, AZ, NV, CO, and a few more from the southeast, midwest, and northeast (something they have done very well for not being a “national” recruiter, like ND or Stanford)
February 6th, 2013 at 10:24 PM
Russians trying to be unique. Don’t be deceived
February 6th, 2013 at 10:27 PM
I think they’re just trying to get a piece of my newly acquired wealth. Thanks, Nigeria!
February 6th, 2013 at 10:29 PM
I know SC. I just believe the recruiting landscape has changed a bit recently. The game has changed. And other programs in the West are on the rise. USC will need a fantastic coach to bring it back. I doubt it’ll ever be as dominant as it was though.
