Ballin’: Warriors Prevent Rockets From Setting 3-Point Record by Any Means Necessary
Milwaukee 104, Denver 112: The announcers called this the “shot of century” and then downshifted to “shot of the year.” Either way, very impressive shot by Gallo, who scored 22 points as the Nuggets outscored the Bucks 33-18 in the 4th quarter. Perhaps the most surprising NBA line of the year: Sam Dalembert: 27 minutes, 17-of-21 shooting, 35 points, 12 rebounds. He plays for the Bucks, and came off the bench to have the best game of his career after Larry Sanders got hurt. Also, you just can’t go soft at the rim when JaVale McGee is in the vicinity.
Indiana 114, Atlanta 103: Paul George is probably the best player we haven’t written enough about in 2013. The great find from Fresno scored 29, leading six Pacers double figures. They’re 30-19 and probably would be the best story in the East – remember, their best scorer from a year ago, Danny Granger, hasn’t played a game – if the Knicks didn’t dominate out of the gate. Indiana has won 15 straight at home.
LA Lakers 92, Brooklyn 83: Kobe Bryant dunked, Dwight sat, and Pau Gasol got hurt. The Lakers inched closer to the .500 mark. Earl Clark, the former Louisville star, scored 14 points and took 12 rebounds.
Phoenix 96, Memphis 90: The Grizzlies were blitzed in the 4th quarter – at home, the second time in a week that’s happened – and lost to the Suns. Jerryd Bayless is the new scorer for Memphis, I guess – he scored 29 points (11-of-15 shooting). Record since the Rudy Gay trade: 1-2. Kendall Marshall sighting for Phoenix: 11 points in 32 minutes in the best game of his rookie season.
Golden State 109, Houston 140: The Rockets made 23 3-pointers (watch all of them in the video above), then the Warriors got sick of it, and Draymond Green decked Patrick Beverly. They record for NBA 3′s in a game is 24, and the Warriors didn’t want to get humiliated that way. Houston scored 77 points in the first half. Jeremy Lin: 28 points, nine assists. Lin had more three-pointers (5) than the Warriors did (3). About the only highlight of the game for Golden State was this halfcourt bomb from Stephen Curry.

Coaches/managers who call themselves “old school” are just the worst…shit move by Jackson, McHale had already emptied his bench, were those guys supposed to just dribble out the shot clock each possession?
February 6th, 2013 at 11:14 AM
Still 10th in the west.
Stop winning Phoenix.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:16 AM
Chandler Parsons’ “hand down, man down” tweet after the game was pretty good.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:17 AM
Timmy v Kobe for what probably should be Kobe’s last year would be a great 1st round series.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:20 AM
I miss having Gallo on the Knicks.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:20 AM
If that happens then maybe Utah could be the team to drop out and we could also get a OKC/Houston 1st round series.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:25 AM
Kobe’s last year? He’ll play another 4 easily.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:26 AM
I would love OKC/Houston, and I could see Utah dropping out because outside of Hayward and Mo, nobody on that team can shoot.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:27 AM
I’d really rather he didn’t.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:27 AM
So how about that Warrior defense people tried to convince me was good? They are now allowing over 100 ppg
February 6th, 2013 at 11:29 AM
I guess someone has to.

I dont think Mark Jackson can get through a sentence without dropping some inane sports cliche. That’s his thing.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:30 AM
Whitlock is right. Kobe has turned into Favre. He is mostly immune from criticism by the scribes under his employ.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:31 AM
No, he just wasn’t going to allow them to shoot another 3.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:33 AM
me too!
/jerry buss’d
30 million reasons.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:33 AM
Don’t let that fool ya. Watched the game, and the Suns’ front line frolicked in the lane all night. Dragic got 16 in the 4th, mostly in the lane.
Rudy wasn’t gonna make a difference last night, since he doesn’t defend in the post. He’d have been an innocent bystander, at best.
Tough for the Grizz – @ ATL tonight, home vs. GSW Friday night. The gap between seeds 4-8 are getting closer with every passing game. Fun for most fans. Not for me.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:35 AM
Funny thing is by doing this he brought more attention to his fuck awful defense than if Houston had simply made one more, well done coach
February 6th, 2013 at 11:35 AM
Kobe is playing at a high level this year, plus the idea that Kobe at any time in his career has ever been immune from media criticism is laughable.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:36 AM
They’ll gladly pay that. People still come out to see Kobe shoot 10-32 and place blame on teammates.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:37 AM
Predict bad things ahead for Memphis. ZBo is already grumbling, and if Jerryd Bayless is your go-to-guy, you got issues (I’m a Raps fan, I’d know). Get that ball back to Conley.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:37 AM
On offense he has been great. He is playing little to no defense this year. A lot of watching guys go past him.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:38 AM
They’re 16th in the league. Not bad considering they start Klay, Curry, & Lee. I would think it’ll improve with Bogut.
Anybody read Zach Lowe’s feature on the Bulls defense? Pretty amazing what Thibs does.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:40 AM
I saw Darrell Arthur launch a 3 pointer as an option last night, and came to the realization that this squad is in trouble.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:40 AM
That is bad for a playoff team. And it is bad because of Klay, Curry, Lee, like I was saying
February 6th, 2013 at 11:40 AM
Kobe’s taken some heat in his past. I’d hold off on that Favre comparison.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:42 AM
Garnett going to Clippers would be awesome. OKC, San Antonio, and Clippers fighting it out for western conference title. Let’s face it, Eastern Conference race is over. Heat will walk all over rest of the teams.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:42 AM
Memphis is done. Their scoring from positions 1-3 is a joke
February 6th, 2013 at 11:43 AM
Not really from a basketball perspective, mostly just the way Walczewski would scream his name in a slightly offensive manner after he hit a 3.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:43 AM
Sure. But I was talking about past 3 years or so after he won his last title.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:45 AM
trojans: are you more of a fan of garnett or pierce?
if you had to pick one, which one would you want to see leave? does pierce being a “lifetime celtic” come into the equation?
February 6th, 2013 at 11:46 AM
Yes it would.
/Spur and Thunder fans
February 6th, 2013 at 11:46 AM
…on offense.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:47 AM
Fun Rockets game last night.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:48 AM
CHI could take them to 7 with DRose.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:48 AM
As a player I definitely prefer Garnett. I’m assuming Garnett still has more value too, so on that premise I’d rather they trade him
I prefer Pierce for the sentimental reasons you alluded to, but not being a career Celtic wouldn’t matter much to me. He’s put in his time and he can chase another title if he wants. I don’t see it happening in Boston
February 6th, 2013 at 11:49 AM
I love how defense is arbitrarily used when judging a player’s performance. There is no perimeter player I’ve ever seen who has been asked to be the primary offensive threat and guard the other teams best guard throughout the game. Not Jordan, LeBron, no one. A good coach would talk up help defense.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:49 AM
I don’t know. They were talking about trading him for Deandre Jordan. I’d do that if I was the clippers.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:50 AM
Z-Bo has also been getting his low-post shots blocked more than usual. HE should be more concerned about how Gortat kept taking him down low.
Bayless isn’t the ongoing go-to guy. He got hot last night & kept firing.
Their best offense is Conley initiating, Gasol as a high-post dual threat & Z-Bo on the block. Bayless, Arthur, Pondexter (yeah, him) and Prince can all contribute.
If they don’t defend, it doesn’t matter who thinks he’s first option.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:50 AM
Totally disagree, but I’ll take the bait. Why would Spur and OKC fans like that?
February 6th, 2013 at 11:50 AM
The rumor I saw was Deandre and Bledsoe.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:52 AM

February 6th, 2013 at 11:53 AM
There isn’t a team that finishes in the top 4 in the East that the Heat will be walking over. As a matter of fact, the Heat making it back to the Finals is far from a given.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:54 AM
True, but…if you have 3, 4 or 5 guys all counting on help, where does the buck stop? Somebody has to chase the LeBrons of the world.
Other than the Bulls, who really plays consistent team defense?
February 6th, 2013 at 11:56 AM
His off-ball defense was so bad this year it was embarrassing. His transition defense was actually worse. MikeD had to start having him check PG’s just to keep him focused during the defenisve possessions. This has been written about and discussed all over. Also enjoy you deriding someone using an “arbitrary” measure while simultaneously finding support with the bullshit “eye test.”
February 6th, 2013 at 11:56 AM
You got it twisted. He was asked to guard the other teams’s best player because he can’t be bothered to rotate or close out on shooters. You don’t have to defend him blindly. He’s not without blame.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:58 AM
Cry me a fucking river. The guy is stationary on defense. Like not moving an inch.
February 6th, 2013 at 11:59 AM
Exactly.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:00 PM
While we are on the subject of horrible Laker defenders, I’ll take this opportunity to deride Steve Nash’s two farcical MVPs. That is officially when the award stopped mattering
/waits for KD to win on because everyone is tired of giving it to Lebron
February 6th, 2013 at 12:01 PM
IND has the best opponent FG% in the league (42.1%). CHI only other team under 43 (42.8%).
February 6th, 2013 at 12:01 PM
Greatest NBA love story. Always get a kick out of Chuckster heaping praise on him.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:01 PM
Clippers would be impossible if hey get Garnett for only that.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:03 PM
I’d still take OKC probably, but Spurs would be done
February 6th, 2013 at 12:07 PM
no perimeter player?
February 6th, 2013 at 12:08 PM
Only that? I think that is a horrible deal for LAC. KG is old. He is going to retire in the next 3 years. Bledsoe could be an All-Star next year, and is only 23. Only knock on Jordan, is his FT %. (Plus, he’s only 24).
February 6th, 2013 at 12:11 PM
There are many more knocks on Jordan. Bledsoe is not an all-star until he shoots the ball a lot better. His talent is undeniable, but if LAC signs Paul, there isn’t going to be money for Bledsoe
February 6th, 2013 at 12:15 PM
Great coaches work 10 times harder on establishing demands, identity and accountability on defense and rebounding than they do on offense. The first place you’ll find any breakdown on defense is transition and help defense. That’s where the coach comes in and addresses it, because sometimes in the midst of the game, the player is thinking, “I’m guarding my man, I’m good”. A real coach breaks out the film. I doubt seriously, that D’Antoni is paying attention to that detail. I watched Chuck Daly (and Isiah) transform a high offensive Pistons team to a championship level defensive squad in less than 5 years. As much as people like to talk about the triangle, I watched Phil Jackson head two dynasties. Mike Woodson took the same squad D’Antoni had and improved them in no time defensively by making defense a priority and making players aware. I don’t listen to basketball on the radio, I watch it on tv, and I’ve watched and followed the game long enough that I am confident in giving my point of view based on what I see. If you don’t have that same confidence, that’s on you.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:16 PM
That will be why he wins. Which is a shame he’s probably having a better year than LeBron. But I feel like he’s maxing out right now (like LeBron in his Cleveland days) while LeBron still has another gear we’ll see in the postseason.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:20 PM
Who is the alternative to Kobe guarding the other team’s best player? Steve Nash. That’s why Kobe is guarding the other team’s best player.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:20 PM
All of Bledsoe’s per 36 mins stats have gone up this year, except for the ones that you want to go down (TOV & PF)
Most importantly, a 7% increase in FG%, while shooting 4 more FG per 36 mins)
February 6th, 2013 at 12:22 PM
and when I mention people using defense arbitrarily, Steve Nash is exactly the person I’m talking about.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:25 PM
There’s no team that would take on that awful contract. Sam Dalembert 2.0 is not an asset.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:27 PM
The season Lebron is having is among the best in league history
February 6th, 2013 at 12:31 PM
Yea this is the go-to media narrative, but in reality, Knicks were top 5 defense under Dantoni last year and 15th this year.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:34 PM
He’s not even among the top 10 highest paid C in the league. Would you rather pay Hibbert (26) $4 million more per year than Jordan?
February 6th, 2013 at 12:35 PM
LeBron is having a great year. But Durant is kicking his ass at the FT line this year, both in volume and %. If you look at Win Shares or PER this is LeBron’s 4th best season in the last 5 years, which says more about how great he’s been over the last 5 years than any flaws in his game this year.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:35 PM
IND for sure. Although, they have sacrificed some defense lately for offense. But MIA isn’t walking over the Pacers, Bulls, or Knicks.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:36 PM
Obviously Jordan has major offensive inefficiencies, but he has yet to have a real NBA head coach.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:37 PM
Hibbert easy. He’s really good defensively. I’m not sure what DeAndre’s good at besides the occasional lob dunk.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:39 PM
You go ahead, and make the argument that Mike D’Antoni was or is a good defensive coach, I won’t argue with you, I’ll let that sit there by itself and bask in its ridiculousness. By the way, not only did Woodson take over the head coaching relatively early in the season, he was brought in by the organization to be the defensive coach. That defense was and is Woodson’s.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:39 PM
No, but that’s cherry picking somebody who is wildly overpaid
vajayjay, he’s shooting over 55/40 from fg/3. That is historic. The understated difference between the two is how much better Lebron is defensively
February 6th, 2013 at 12:42 PM
That has more to do with how Durant is officiated than anything else. I watched his 50 point game where he was something like 31 for 32 from the field and put up 24 free throws.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:44 PM
What about Bogut ($3 million more)? Jefferson ($5 million more)? Pau ($ 9 million more)
February 6th, 2013 at 12:47 PM
Bogut, no because of injuries. Jefferson and Gasol, yes
February 6th, 2013 at 12:47 PM
See this is the problem with being affixed to narratives. You tend to ignore the actual results.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:49 PM
Granted. I think LeBron is the toughest guy to officiate since Shaq’s prime. Both guys able to absorb a ridiculous amount of contact.
February 6th, 2013 at 12:53 PM
as I said, the Knicks brought in Mike Woodson as the defensive coach at the beginning of the year, after they lost out on Frank. Woodson took over as head coach less than 2 months into the season. The Knicks record and defense improved after he took over, especially in the stretch run. That was Woodson’s top 5 defense the entire year, and that’s a top 5 defense that had Baron Davis, Mike Bibby and Jeremy Lin at times during the season running the point. Call it narrative, fine. What part of that “narrative” do you wish to dispute?
February 6th, 2013 at 12:55 PM
Darrell, do you feel the Knicks have been a top 5 defense this season?
February 6th, 2013 at 12:58 PM
I meant 13 for 32
February 6th, 2013 at 12:58 PM
these guys certainly helped, I think.
February 6th, 2013 at 1:05 PM
Knicks defensive personnel is bad outside of Chandler. I maintain they need to trade for a SF who can defend and make threes. Ronnie “Elbow Out” Brewer is a liability
February 6th, 2013 at 1:05 PM
Early on they were. They miss Rasheed Wallace coming off the bench defensively. Also, Kidd has expectedly regressed defensively from the number of minutes early on. They’ve also had to reintroduce STAT and Shumpert into the lineup, and they lost Felton for weeks. All of that volatility is going to create problems both offensively and defensively. I think they’re settling in. So my answer would be that they haven’t been a top 5 defense this year with an asterisk. But they have enough even now to get stops for key moments in a game, while they’re recovering.
February 6th, 2013 at 1:07 PM
I find it funny that you’re so enchanted by Woodson. He’s not exactly some awesome defensive mind. His Hawks teams were middle of the pack on defense. The simplistic switching defense he employs is ridiculously stupid. If they lose, that’s going to be a big reason why – smart teams are going to exploit that.
February 6th, 2013 at 1:08 PM
This is remarkably lazy and so incredibly wrong.
And yet, this is even worse.
February 6th, 2013 at 1:10 PM
I don’t think Mike Woodson is some all time great coach, but he took those Hawks teams as far as they would go. It’s still ridiculous that he was fired.
February 6th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
Not really. Widely reported that him and Smith didn’t get along. SOP within the NBA
February 6th, 2013 at 1:12 PM
so, the answer to my previous question is no, as I thought.
February 6th, 2013 at 1:15 PM
If you think caring about what Josh Smith thinks is idiotic, which I do, then yes, the firing was ridiculous. There’s a reason Danny Ferry is the current GM and not Rick Sund.
February 6th, 2013 at 1:15 PM
We’re not gonna agree on some things. All good, Darrel!
February 6th, 2013 at 1:16 PM
I thought I heard it had more to do with Woodson and management than it did Woodson and Smith or any other player, and that Larry Drew stabbed him in the back. I’ve heard Smith give him nothing but love. I remember when the Knicks played the Hawks in Atlanta, and each of the starting 5 hugged Woodson before and after the game.
February 6th, 2013 at 1:17 PM
The best player and the coach despising each other is not a winning environment
February 6th, 2013 at 1:17 PM
that’s what talking sports is all about.
February 6th, 2013 at 1:33 PM
Who knew that James Naismith commented on this site?
February 6th, 2013 at 1:45 PM
Wait, the rumor is Bledsoe and DeAndre for KG? That’s a horrible trade for LAC. I would take that as a sign that Chris Paul isn’t signing with the Clippers.
