Soccer fans should not treat this as a “Dave O’Brien/2006″ level calamity. O’Brien was thrust in after a cursory crash course and paired with a terrible color commentator. Gus will be engaged with the sport for five years, which is enough time to develop fluency. He’s diligent. He’s professional.

I think this is actually worse than O’Brien because O’Brien actually is diligent and professional. He also isn’t ready to go from zero to 60 like Gus does on minor plays. Gus is the guy you want calling the buzzer beater not the guy calling the penalty shootout in a World Cup. He’ll be screaming after each kick. He’s not going to change his shtick to properly cover the game because all he is shtick.

I would specialize in screaming “HOLDING” during every play, and then when something bad happened, I’d make the play by play guy leave, so I could keep watching without him talking all the time.

Hey, my attitude is the more the merrier for soccer. But I think cultivated, knowledgeable voices bring in more fans than well-known broadcasters who have never worked the sport.

Oh yeah more the merrier the great but I think making soccer fans here seem better than other people simply because of the sport they follow is fucking awful.

Especially considering the majority of the fans in, say, England, are basically SEC fans without the good food.
