Texas AD DeLoss Dodds: “The sport of basketball is in shambles.”
The last two weeks of college basketball have been fantastic. Top 10 teams have been dropping with such consistency, it’s pretty clear there’s no consensus No. 1 team in the country. Last year, Kentucky was, from start-to-finish, the best team in college hoops. By a fairly wide margin. That’s certainly not the case this year.
Whether it’s No. 1 Duke getting rocked in Miami, or Villanova upsetting Syracuse and Louisville when both were in the Top 5, Kansas losing at home to Oklahoma State at home, or any other upset that has taken place in the last few weeks, parity reigns. Which is great for the sport, since it means March Madness will be, well, mad.
The on-court product remains excellent – well, if you can stomach the the ugly 59-58 game – but behind-the-scenes, things are less rosy, according to Texas AD DeLoss Dodds.
Count Plonsky and myself among those who earnestly wish the start of the college basketball season would be pushed back until early December to give that sport a more fair shake in exposure as it tries in vain to compete with college football and the NFL for the public’s consciousness. “We have to start sliding the season back until football calms down,” Plonsky said. Added Dodds, concerning the one-and-done superstars, “The sport of basketball is in shambles.”
For some reason, this year, there seem to be more gripes with college basketball than usual. Is the product down? Well, the first three picks in the 2012 draft were freshman (and five of the top 10), so a lot of the best young talent left for the NBA.
Is change inevitable? In our interview with ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell last week, he didn’t even mention college basketball as one of the five most “popular” sports in the country (though for me, it’s definitely in the top 3). Would shifting the schedule to make the sport’s season Jan-May (May Madness!) instead of Nov-March more palatable?
Maybe, but you’ve still got to deal with the impending BCS Playoff, and then the NFL playoffs in January. So you run into the same problem you did in November – football. Is there data that shows mid-week college basketball games get higher ratings in February vs. Nov/Dec? I haven’t seen any.
At some point, folks are going to have to realize the NFL plays 16 games, college football 12, and college basketball around 30. There’s just no way the games in college hoops can mean as much (same goes for the NBA season and the MLB season). College basketball has one thing no other sport does: the best postseason in sports.
Perhaps DeLoss can expand on what he means by “shambles.” Financially? Does he know something we don’t?
Anyway, so the best team right now? Shucks … Indiana? Miami? Michigan? Florida’s been incredible – stats say they’re the best college basketball defensive team in a decade – but is just 1-2 against the RPI Top 50, and my eyes tell me the Gators are still far too reliant on 3-pointers falling.
I’m still thinking Butler, Indiana and Louisville are three of my Final Four picks, and I’m up-in-the-air about the other one. If I had to take another team outside of the Ken Pom Top 10 (Butler is 46), I guess give me Oklahoma State? I’m sure this means the Cowboys will lose to Baylor at home Wednesday. [Statesman]

“Texas basketball is in shambles.”

Maybe he realizes the product is bad.

So the college football narrative around here is that college football players/stars are what makes the sport so profitable, and without them, fan allegiance would dwindle. But in college basketball, it’s all about parity in mediocrity so that there are no clear elites, and therefore the sport should still thrive?

No. People that don’t like college hoops aren’t going to like it because they move the season back.
I guess give me Oklahoma State?
If Saint Self would have kept Elijah Johnson’s ass on the bench in the final minute, they’d be 4-4 in a really shitty Big 12.

i can understand why somebody who employs rich barnes would think bball is screwed
February 4th, 2013 at 3:10 PM
as a casual/gambling fan, i see no difference in cbb than other years. this guy is butthurt about something unrelated

weirdest thing about cbb this year? illinois whomping zags on the road

Makes no sense. Basketball is the 2nd most popular collegiate sport, nothing wrong with that. Texas’ AD needs to stick to football.
February 4th, 2013 at 3:13 PM
I think you could have ended your post here. It is really all about the quality of the product and the transience of players in the sport.
Tough to get attached or emotionally invested in a team or players when you know they are going to be gone after a year (caveat: Unless you are an alum of that particular school).
February 4th, 2013 at 3:14 PM
I don’t like the one and done either. Let kids go pro from high school if they want to.
While there is a shit ton of parity this year, there’s also a pretty clear top 4 right now (Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan) but I’d probably take the next 8 teams as a group over that foursome in terms of winning the title

So college basketball should model itself after college baseball? That’s gonna help its popularity?
February 4th, 2013 at 3:26 PM
Three year rule, just like the NFL.
February 4th, 2013 at 3:28 PM
I think this really hits it on the head. I used to love CBB but haven’t paid much attention in recent years until the tournament.

“Shining Base Path” – name change again, dude? What is your major malfunction?

Push back the college baseball season before you push back the college basketball season.

TBL’s Monday after super bowl posts have been “Phil Simms-ish”… maybe it’s because I’ve come to expect much better, but I’ve been finding myself going to Deadspin a lot more than usual today.
February 4th, 2013 at 3:34 PM
I agree with this.
February 4th, 2013 at 3:35 PM
Jason, do you have any numbers (attendance, ratings) from this season compared to maybe a few years back that either confirm or refute what DeLoss is saying? Curious to know if there’s any real meat to his statement or if he’s just talking out his ass.
February 4th, 2013 at 3:36 PM
All the LOLs
February 4th, 2013 at 3:46 PM
how is it any worse than the last decade?
can you define “bad?”
that’s just an opinion.
February 4th, 2013 at 3:47 PM
Good post J-Mac. Except for your use of the word “shucks”
February 4th, 2013 at 3:50 PM
Well if he’s referring to just Texas basketball, I don’t think that’s a matter of opinion, that product is a shit sandwich with miracle whip.
February 4th, 2013 at 3:51 PM
Mmmm
February 4th, 2013 at 3:55 PM
Miracle Whip is actually homeless man color, so enjoy that tomato sandwich.
February 4th, 2013 at 3:57 PM
Still better than mayonaisse. Toast the bread, freshly sliced ‘maters. Tough to beat in the summer.

Only on that. Haven’t had one in a long time
February 4th, 2013 at 4:26 PM
I love college hoops (more than most of my friends), but there’s no way I could deny that the one and done has taken some of the luster away. I realize there’s always been a tournament, but it does seem like regular season games mean less, especially considering the rivalries are becoming less important with constant re-allignment. I’m to the point where after the Buckeyes lose a game, I say “well, who cares, it only matters how well they play in March.”
February 4th, 2013 at 4:30 PM
At least you’re finally off the Maryland wagon. They might make the NIT F4.
February 4th, 2013 at 4:35 PM
Parity is a good concept, but a rotten reality. People love greatness, dominance, and a team they love to hate. We like to attach the term upset to some of these games, but in reality there are no true upsets that take place anymore because these teams are evenly matched for the most part. In the case of College basketball, kids leaving early has killed the quality of the sport. Beyond that, the explosion of AAU/travel ball has created a familiarity amongst players that has killed the intimidation factor of a small or mid major school facing a big time school/player. George Mason’s run was the best example of this.

I think Florida is the best team in the country, and I don’t think it’s close. The step they took forward in January was massive.

“Shining Base Path” – name change again, dude? What is your major malfunction?
if it makes a bunch of work for you,or even a little, i understand. otherwise…it’s funny to me that you get so crazed about it

Here’s college B-Ball ratings through 1-20. They are terrible, but I don’t know if this is unusual or not. Lots of 0.0 ratings on ESPNU games.
