Parents Television Council Wants CBS Fined For Joe Flacco’s F-Bomb
Following the Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl victory last night, Joe Flacco did something that was almost interesting. Flacco was shown celebrating and was clearly heard saying, “fucking awesome,” on national television. Since the incident occurred on CBS – the former home of Janet Jackson’s nipple – the Parents Television Council is super pissed and they want the FCC to fine CBS. From TV by the Numbers:
“Despite empty assurance after empty assurance from the broadcast networks that they would never air indecent material, especially during the Super Bowl, it has happened again,” said PTC president Tim Winter.
“No one should be surprised that a jubilant quarterback might use profane language while celebrating a career-defining win, but that is precisely the reason why CBS should have taken precautions. Joe Flacco’s use of the f-word, while understandable, does not absolve CBS of its legal obligation to prevent profane language from being broadcast – especially during something as uniquely pervasive as the Super Bowl. The instance was aired live across the country, and before the FCC’s designated ‘Safe Harbor’ time everywhere but along the East Coast.
“Now nine years after the infamous Janet Jackson incident, the broadcast networks continue to have ‘malfunctions’ during the most-watched television event of the year, and enough is enough. After more than four years of inaction on broadcast decency enforcement, the FCC must step up to its legal obligation to enforce the law, or families will continue to be blindsided,” concluded Winter.
Won’t someone please think of the children!?
What a load of bullshit. If “no one should be surprised” and Flacco saying fuck is “understandable,” then what is the big effing deal? It’s a swear word. These blowhards need to go away.

I don’t normally make this kind of comment: but these people will only go away when people stop talking about them, this kind of post just encourages them. Any publicity for them is good publicity.

Fuck no, we want Joe!

The fine money would work it’s way into Republican coffers which is way they do it. Piety and political corruption go hand in hand.

Showing a World War Z extended trailer where zombies are being bloodily machine-gunned down at 620pm, immediately before the did the anthems: fine.
Having a player omit an obscenity without much context at 1030pm – outrage.
I have a 4 & 5 year old, I’d rather they tone down the bloody and violent commercials during the games. But I realize that’s my job as a parent.
February 4th, 2013 at 1:41 PM
Even kids, scientifically the stupidest group of people on the planet, are smart enough to realize that movie is going to be awful and ignore it, though.
February 4th, 2013 at 1:42 PM
Goodell should invite him on the NFL Network, under the guise of a ceremony in which he hands over a gigantic cardboard check. Then, once Winter is close enough, punch him in the head and tell him to get out of the building immediately. I can envision no scenario that would swing my opinion of Goodell faster

I don’t think the PTC has a problem with Flacco – their problem is with CBS’s failure to prevent it from being aired live. If you have a problem with this – fault CBS for letting it air in the first place instead of being all school-girl giddy over the fact than an F-word made it onto live TV.
February 4th, 2013 at 1:44 PM
Just how effective is PTC? Were they the ones responsible for a decade of white bread entertainment acts for Super Bowl half-time show?
February 4th, 2013 at 1:44 PM
Take it away, Danny Glover
February 4th, 2013 at 1:45 PM
Why were the PTC kids still up at 11:30 on a school night? Some parenting right there.
February 4th, 2013 at 1:46 PM
Precisely. CBS is going to get fined for this, it’s an absolute certainty.

Seriously. My daughter won’t lose sleep over someone dropping a “Fuck” on TV…unless it was Mickey Mouse cussing out Minnie. That might rock her world.
February 4th, 2013 at 1:50 PM
I can’t wait until I have kids so I can blame any bad behavior on everything but my parenting skills.
February 4th, 2013 at 1:51 PM

That bitch has had it coming for 70 years.
February 4th, 2013 at 1:51 PM
You guys don’t get it. CBS made it promise and failed miserably. What’s so hard to understand?

Saying “what’s the big deal about this” is essentially telling a cop that you can handle driving 75 in a 55. He doesn’t care. You’d be fined, and so will CBS.
February 4th, 2013 at 1:53 PM
Fuck you, narc.
February 4th, 2013 at 1:53 PM
Everyone gets it. It’s just a who cares issue and PTC is a deplorable organization
February 4th, 2013 at 1:53 PM
CBS will pay a fine of $5,000 and Joe Flacco will be forced to return his unibrow for the rest of his career.

I’m surprised that CBS doesn’t have some kind of delay with some geeked out dude with hipster glasses and teacher’s ears ready to mash the beeper.

Shocking they can accomplish this with no zombies.

CBS should be fined for the television shows they produce mon-fri night.
February 4th, 2013 at 1:59 PM
You’d be fined, and so will CBS.
did’t the supreme court recently say the fcc can’t fine for one-time, excited speech? Had to do with bono saying “shit” at an awards show, if i recall.
February 4th, 2013 at 1:59 PM
Big Bang Theory gets 20 million viewers. While I pat myself in the back for not watching their shitty shows, they are just printing their own money.
February 4th, 2013 at 1:59 PM
CBS made almost $230mm in ad’s last night. The can send the FCC $75k in pennies.

February 4th, 2013 at 2:01 PM
Stop with all the fancy lawyer-speak!
February 4th, 2013 at 2:02 PM
That decision didn’t have anything to do with the actual rule the FCC put in place (that excited utterances no longer were exempt) rather that they didn’t give the networks proper notice before putting it into effect.
Also it dealt with daytime hours, not primetime hours.
February 4th, 2013 at 2:03 PM
Maybe, maybe not. I kept thinking during this article that I remembered reading somewhere that the FCC has changed how it fines when things like this happen during live broadcasts and I found this
Supreme Court rejects FCC fines for brief nudity and expletives: What does this mean for TV?

one parent’s POV: our 12yo has heard me and his mom and his dad swear blue streaks all his life. i have yet to hear him swear and i met him when he was 2
as for the wee ones, what harm is bad language? only harm i can see is them repeating them. i make it clear they are not to do this, especially away from home. me and the 6yo boy who is into horror movies watched the blair witch project saturday
did not worry about him being scared but warned him of the language and that he is not to repeat it
that flick does not age well but when it came out was amazing. may have set the record for profit margin
