Michigan vs. Indiana in a Saturday Night Showdown
Michigan travels to Indiana tonight in a showdown of top seed hopefuls in the Big Ten. Both teams are among the best shooting teams in the country, but the game will likely come down to the defensive side, and an injury on Michigan’s front line.
Teams can score against Michigan anyway, an outstanding skill group of starters, but one lacking a dominant shot blocking force. Michigan gets it done defensively by limiting second chances and rebounding. Their tallest starter, center Jordan Morgan, sprained his ankle last Sunday, and missed the mid-week game against Northwestern. He may play tonight, but will be limited by the ankle injury if he does.
The primary matchup that Indiana had to take advantage of anyway was 7’0″ Cody Zeller going against the Michigan front line. With Morgan’s status uncertain, Michigan will need more minutes out of Jon Horford and Mitch McGary. Those two players give them their best height and shot blocking ability, and the duo probably gives them the best defensive matchup against Zeller anyway. If Zeller requires too much defensive attention or the Michigan young big men get in foul trouble, Indiana’s shooters led by Jordan Hulls will have a big game.
At the other end, Michigan’s Trey Burke may very well be the Player of the Year as we head in to February. His play at point guard is the reason why Michigan is among the top 4 teams. If Michigan hopes to win in Bloomington for just the third time in the last twenty-three trips, he’ll have to be the best player on the court.
It should have been three wins in the last 22 games, but this game stands out in the series to me, a game I remember watching as a kid. (thanks for all the readers who pointed me to the video). To get you ready for the game, here is Jay Edwards beating Michigan with a buzzer beater in 1989. Don’t worry, Michigan fans, if it happens again, it is not the end. That was the year the Wolverines won the national championship.

Prepare for a 44-42 B1G thriller

Whats the purpose of having a primetime awards show on CBS if the winners are scrolling across the crawl on ESPN? Good job NFL

That’s like when they re-aired the Australian Open for people who didn’t want to stay up till 3 in the morning and they had the winner and final score scrolling across the bottom the entire time.

The next IU/Michigan meeting is the last game of the B1G regular saeson. Could very well be a big game for the conference championship and tournament seedings. Yours truly will be there.

USF is truly an unwatchable basketball team.

Good job, good effort by ESPN. The final was the second tennis match I’ve ever watched end to end. Was drunk visiting a friend in Boston and put a huge bet by my standards on Djokovic at -175

Gun store, liquor store, liquor store, gun store. Where the hell are you taking me!?
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:11 PM
Peyton Manning fatigue. Larry Bird fell victim in 87. This is part of why awards mean little
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:14 PM
SC, did you give that slant eyed a little bit of the round eye’s one eyed?
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:17 PM
Sc…peterson did lead that team to the playoffs. Broncos made playoffs with similar roster and tebow. If Ponder was even average, i think manning had a shot to win
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:19 PM
Demarcus cousins only guy showing up for sacramento…kings down 92-49 in third Q. Knicks raining threes. Chandler has 20 rebounds thru 3 quarters.
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:20 PM
That’s a big ass deficit to see in the pros.
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:21 PM
IU can’t do anything wrong. Wow.
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:24 PM
Oladipo is so freakin’ good. Remember last year when people said Watford was the 2nd best player on the team, and had an NBA future?
Oladipo is a much better player. one guy worked harder, that much is obvious
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:25 PM
Meth, sacramento is a hot mess. Bad coaching, bad teamwork, selfish players, no defense, an epic dumpster fire
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:25 PM
Zeller is going to be so good in the pros
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:25 PM
Yes, Meth, I most certainly did.
Kings have to be a nightmare to try to coach, AP.
WFS, who do you think makes the best pro for Mich? Only been a couple mins, but Hardaway looks impressive
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:27 PM
Amare is 10-10 shooting tonight. Damn
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:27 PM
99-54 knicks , 9:45 left in 4th quarter
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:32 PM
Burke is the best player on the team. Hardaway is also really good, and he’s gotten better at controlling himself, but he has a tendency to try and shoot his way out of a scoring slump. I really like McGary and Son of Big Dog. They’re obviously not NBA ready yet, but have some good potential in a couple years.
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:37 PM
To put him into better terms for you: He reminds me of a little more athletic version of Vucevic.
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:38 PM
Oladipo is so freakin’ good.
He’s got this weird build. Like the pick up hoops guy that is wide enough up top to drive and control the dribble and still pop it off on short notice while being able to D up enough to annoy you. And doesn’t look athletic. I may not be making any sense.
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:43 PM
High praise. I was caught off guard by that left handed finish on the pass from Stauskas
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:50 PM
Probably a bit of fandom on my part, but the kid has already made a huge improvement this season. He’s got the skills, is very coachable, and has a non-stop motor on the court.
February 2nd, 2013 at 9:51 PM
Entertaining first half.

If it wasn’t for the fact that the parking lot is slippery as hell, I would feel like one lazy bastard for driving 400 yards to the grocery store on my break instead of walking. I could see it now. Walking across the parking lot, minding my own business, carrying that big bag of dog food, and WHAM! Hello, Gravity. Where did you come from?
