Major Applewhite Had Affair With Student During 2009 Fiesta Bowl Trip, While His Wife Was Nine Months Pregnant
Texas AD Deloss Dodds released a statement, revealing that offensive coordinator Major Applewhite had a “one-time” affair with an adult student during the 2009 Fiesta Bowl trip and was disciplined for it afterward. According to Applewhite’s bio, this happened just before his daughter was born in January 2009. Texas scheduled an emergency board of regents meeting for Sunday.
“Major Applewhite engaged in inappropriate, consensual behavior with an adult student one time during the 2009 Fiesta Bowl activities. After learning of his behavior later that month, I took immediate action to review the situation. We promptly initiated an inquiry with assistance from the university’s Legal Affairs office and other units outside of Athletics. Major admitted his inappropriate conduct and he was disciplined. In determining appropriate discipline, we analyze the facts and circumstances surrounding the behavior and its relation to job responsibilities. Major fully accepted his discipline, including counseling. We have high standards for behavior and expect our staff and coaches to adhere to them in all aspects of their lives. I believe that the appropriate discipline was taken in this case.”
This may be a bigger story than where Applewhite dips his wick. Texas’ acknowledgement comes in the wake of track and field coach Bev Kearney’s resignation. Kearney was placed on paid leave in November and resigned in January after it was revealed she had a consensual relationship with one of her athletes in 2002. The former student-athlete came forward with the relationship, just before Kearney’s five-year $750,000 contract extension was sent to the Board of Regents for approval.
Texas could be aligning ducks for a legal battle. The prudent step, should Kearney file suit, would be addressing any skeletons her legal team could dredge up suggesting a double standard. It’s hard to find a more compelling one than a prominent, male football coach having a similar dalliance.
Much depends on how Applewhite was affiliated with the student. Kearney’s relationship was with a student-athlete under her tutelage, which is a violation of Texas policy. If Applewhite’s affair was with a student with whom he had no supervisory role, there should be no outstanding issue. If he did have a supervisory role, though, his future employment may be untenable.

For the record Bev Kearney is a bad person.

If the girl was in any way affiliated with the athletic department (even as a volunteer), Applewhite’s sunk.

IF there is one thing TV has taught me, it’s that this lady is a whore and she’ll get some hush money.

I just don’t understand what possessed this person to come forward 10 years later.

That’s right. Dollar signs.
Ol’ Major pulled a Tiki.

To put your wife and child thru that, that’s cold-blooded. Even if the wife forgave, the rest of the world won’t let her forget.

All they would have is the letter of their regulation to fall back on. Termination wasn’t the only option available to them in Kearny’s case, and the way it reads, you would think termination would occur after numerous violations. The school received a report of a relationship with one person regarding Kearny, and they went scorched earth. Not only did they go scorched earth, but they did it at the time she was due a raise. A decent lawyer will eat through any attempt Texas makes to differentiate between the two.

Do you have experience with Kearney, Josh? Fill us in…
Despite the differences between the Kearney and Applewhite situations, I personally think we may be seeing a large settlement for Bev.

Kearney has been one of the most successful recent coaches at Texas. I wonder what pushed them over the edge to can her: her being black? being gay? it being one of her student-athletes? her being a jerk? or all of the above?
February 2nd, 2013 at 11:08 AM
How do we know there is a difference? My assumption is there was no difference. Based on how the reg reads, if she wasn’t connected to the program, there would have been no reason or requirement for Texas to address the situation by sending Applewhite to “counseling”.
February 2nd, 2013 at 11:18 AM
Well, one major difference is that coaches are required to self-report sexual involvement with a student, which Applewhite did and Kearney did not. Of course, there’s no telling what exactly prompted Major to report. Call me skeptical but I doubt he did it all of his own volition.

That’s not how I read it, unless I’m missing something:
February 2nd, 2013 at 11:34 AM
I hadn’t actually read that release and was going by what I had heard on some UT sites I go to (barkingcarnival.com)
I just looked at Applewhite’s statement, and it is a bit unclear:
Shortly after it occurred, I discussed the situation with DeLoss Dodds. I was upfront and took full responsibility for my actions. This is and was resolved four years ago with the University
I am tending to agree with you that perhaps it wasn’t Major himself who reported the situation. That seemed to be the initial report on barkingcarnival, but even there it appears to have changed.

Unless their argument is that Applewhite did it one time with one person, while Kearny did it multiple times with one person. So it would be a case as to what should be considered multiple offenses, the number of people or the number of encounters.

Some pretty funny tweets. I like the one “half way through his inappropriate act, Major Applewhite was replaced by Chris Simms.”

Jim Harbaugh met his current wife when he was married with three children … that’s bigger news than this schlep
February 2nd, 2013 at 1:53 PM
And even better – Jim left his pregnant wife to be with his current wife. Again, much bigger news.
February 2nd, 2013 at 1:55 PM
Write an original story — Google it. Jim Harbaugh met his current wife in January of 2006 in a parking lot. Yet his wife at the time had their child in September of 2006. Incidentally, the meeting with his current wife was about a month after Jim was arrested for Drunk Driving. Now that’s a story that people haven’t written.
February 2nd, 2013 at 2:13 PM
I’m starting to think Jim Harbaugh’s first wife was named Sara LeRange.
February 2nd, 2013 at 2:13 PM
*Sarah

February 2nd, 2013 at 2:24 PM
Na, you had it right with Sara. The H is for Harbaugh. Keeping it alive, along with the obsession
February 2nd, 2013 at 2:25 PM
The bodybuilder referring to the size of his testes, right?
February 2nd, 2013 at 2:36 PM
alright I admit it, I’m Jim’s ex-wife. AMA
February 2nd, 2013 at 2:37 PM
But don’t you think it’s a story that my baby-daddy-husband left me (while pregnant).
Incidentally — our first child was born in 1989 and he was nice enough to marry me in 1996.
February 2nd, 2013 at 2:38 PM
why the hell would you come bitch about it on a sports blog comment section? Go take it to a newspaper or deadspin. We’re just a bunch of anonymous shmucks who make stupid jokes at each other’s expense
February 2nd, 2013 at 2:40 PM
so is your first name actually Miah or are you another lame internet troll?
February 2nd, 2013 at 2:41 PM
Jim’s first wife was named Miah. His current wife’s name is Sarah

This article references an incident that happened in 2009, regarding an assistant college coach. I was bringing up a story that involves an NFL Super Bowl coach that happened in the past. I believe it’s relevant to this thread?
February 2nd, 2013 at 2:49 PM
Regarding me being a troll — one of the comments humorously referred to me as Jim Harbaugh’s ex; that was funny. I responded, accepting my title as Jim Harbaugh’s ex (he’s quite handsome). Sorry for mis-leading you.
February 2nd, 2013 at 5:08 PM
Hey, I know that story already because my fiancee’s sister went to USD, Sarah. Wasn’t she a grad asst or something for the school?
February 2nd, 2013 at 5:58 PM
I don’t believe she worked at USD. According to the article (link below) – Harbaugh saw the lady at a restaurant while he was in Vegas, he followed her to the parking lot and got her number. He called her 9 times. The story is a bit sketchy.
1. She says she didn’t know who he was, but she knew he had “practice” the next day (not sure what practice he had in Las Vegas)
2. 9 months later Harbaughs wife would have a baby. Either Harbaugh slept with his baby-mamma-ex-wife the week prior to meeting his new wife, or the week after.
Regardless — the guy doesn’t seem awesome. And just for clarification. I do NOT know him at all, nor his wife, nor ever sucked any part of his body.
Here’s the link to the article.
