Ballin’: Joe Johnson Broke Chris Bosh’s Ankles, and Ricky Rubio Made Another Impressive Between-the-Legs Pass
Miami 105, Brooklyn 85: Why hasn’t a GIF of Chris Bosh from this ankle-breaking crossover been made yet? You’re slacking, internet. After Reggie “Ball Grab” Evans said LeBron was on the same level as Joe Johnson, the forward went out and played 19 minutes, collected six rebounds, and scored no points. LeBron? Just 24 points, nine rebounds, seven assists.
LA Clippers 96, Minnesota 90: Matt Barnes didn’t like this pick set by Greg Stiemsma. I can’t wait for Barnes to mix-it-up with someone – anyone – in the postseason. It’s a given. Also, Ricky Rubio did this.
Phoenix 92, LA Lakers 86: The Lakers lost Dwight Howard to an injured shoulder (again), and then wasted a 13-point lead in the 4th quarter and lost. Michael Beasley scored 27 points off the bench and played defense too (five steals).
Chicago 104, Milwaukee 88: Are the Bulls the least talked-about good team in the NBA? They were supposed to fold without Derrick Rose, but haven’t, and now we’re at the point where it’s time to wonder: How good will this team be when the best point guard in the NBA returns? Jimmy Butler and Nate Robinson are playing tremendous off the bench (18 and 24, respectively), and you basically know what Noah/Deng/Gibson are going to give you nightly. Even Carlos Boozer and Marco Belinelli are having strong seasons. The weakness, obviously, is Rip Hamilton (35 in two weeks) at shooting guard.
Denver 118, Houston 110: That’s five in a row for the Nuggets, who got 27 points from Gallo, including this prayer, which had a Larry Bird-quality to it.
Philadelphia 92, Washington 84: Holiday scored 21, Nick Young added 18, and the 76ers … CAN ANDREW BYNUM PLEASE COME BACK? This John Wall block was sweet, but he only shot 3-of-12. The loss leaves the Wizards 1/2 game ahead of the Bobcats for worst record in the NBA.

Again, really cannot be understated how dominant Miami’s third quarter was. Entire team was in the zone, just sinking off balance threes for fun. The stretch from eight minutes on was just ridiculous.
Also holy shit are the Lakers hard to watch.
January 31st, 2013 at 10:44 AM
I like Barnes. Suspension coming. The Stiemer would’ve ended his career had it come to blows
January 31st, 2013 at 10:46 AM
Agreed. Was a nice move. Watson had a nice move from the top as well. Watching the Heat has become mandatory viewing for me. Can’t get over how much I love watching LeBron. Need some of those shoes he was wearing last night too

Awesome sauce.

Top candidates:
Steve Jackson
Z-Bo
Harden
Andre Miller (scary)

Oh and obligatory Austin Rivers Watch: 0 points, 0 assists, 1 turnover, 2 fouls, in five minutes.
January 31st, 2013 at 10:47 AM
how long will Bosh be out with bilateral broken ankles?
January 31st, 2013 at 10:47 AM
His passing is unfairly good.
January 31st, 2013 at 10:47 AM
Am I in college again? Better than dope sauce I guess
January 31st, 2013 at 10:50 AM
let’s just skip the rest of the season and fast forward to the Miami-OKC rematch. That’s going to be a hell of a series.
January 31st, 2013 at 10:51 AM
Shannon Brown has a pretty great dunk in the first quarter last night by the way, cannot find video of it, but he just walked through the Lakers “defense” and rose like crazy.
January 31st, 2013 at 10:52 AM
Duckworth?
But this is amazing.
January 31st, 2013 at 10:53 AM
It was throwback jersey night in Phoenix. They should wear these ones though.
January 31st, 2013 at 10:54 AM
Was wondering about that, thought they looked familiar.

Russ Westbrook is the X-factor IMO. Know what you’re getting from everyone else, assuming Wade cycles on

Rudy Gay deal done.

No love for the Pistons freeing up 30 million in cap space to go along with their inevitable lottery pick this summer?
January 31st, 2013 at 10:58 AM
The poor man’s Marcus Williams, who would’ve been good if he wasn’t so lazy
Starting out his career with the Nets, he did an interview with the YES Network, during which he revealed his favorite hobby to be sleeping
January 31st, 2013 at 10:59 AM
Those were fantastic. Would love to own a pair of those and the old school black Magic pinstripe shorts
January 31st, 2013 at 10:59 AM
My mom bought me that specific jersey when I was a kid but it was AC Green. She didn’t understand basketball.
January 31st, 2013 at 10:59 AM
Fontes, what are your thoughts on Lawrence Frank? I’m a fan
January 31st, 2013 at 11:01 AM
Vlad I saw a article about that JUCO WR. He played in H.S. for Ricky Powers. Powers said some good things about him.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:02 AM
I think it’s time “broke XXX’s ankles” was replaced with something more vivid, like “Joe Johnson Annie Wilkes’d Chris Bosh.”
January 31st, 2013 at 11:02 AM
I’m loving it. They better unload some other guys to insure they don’t make the playoffs. Joe D better not sign anyone this offseason. Save it all for 2014. Frank is a clown.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:03 AM
She was giving you a hint about saving it for marriage. Good Christian woman!
January 31st, 2013 at 11:04 AM
Why?
January 31st, 2013 at 11:05 AM
Jumpin Joe Johnson’s obliteration of Paul Pierce a couple months back is still the play of the year.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:05 AM
I actually think they won that trade. Memphis did fairly well, and WTF Toronto? Glad I’m not a Raps fan.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:05 AM
I am all the way done with the Raptors. Rudy Gay is what you got for Calderon & Davis? The franchise is beyond hopeless.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:06 AM
Yea…. well….. I have a mint condition AC Green jersey and my son starts middle school next year.

4 games out of 8 seed behind BOS, tied with ATL I think.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:08 AM
Is Josh Smith going to get traded or what?
January 31st, 2013 at 11:08 AM
I’ll be honest, I haven’t really watched much of them to give you an opinion. I will say I thought they’d be close to a .500 team this year. Don’t know if it’s coaching or the rose colored glasses I’m wearing.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:09 AM
The completely opposite reaction between the MSM (“how could they trade Gay!?!”) and bloggers (“LOL Colangelo”) was kinda amusing yesterday.
I do think Grizz had to trade him – terrible fit with their lack of spacing. But at the same time, I think he can thrive in a more open system.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:09 AM
It will be quite amusing if Ballin’ surpasses the Roundup in comments today. Who’da thunk it?
January 31st, 2013 at 11:10 AM
I may be insane, but I came back early from the park to talk about this trade. Or, maybe because of the snow on the walking path.
Anyway, looking at advanced stats (!), Gay was the 4th best efficient offensive player in the Grizz’ starting lineup (only Allen was worse).
Anybody who says Memphis got screwed in this trade is either too lazy or silly to look closer.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:11 AM
Jumpin Joe Johnson’s obliteration of Paul Pierce a couple months back is still the play of the year.

Oral history of Pulp Fiction in Vanity Fair next month.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:13 AM
Casey doesn’t really run an open system. Gay is just going to be a black hole on offense. Really looking forward to a team built around a guy shooting 41% from the field who averages more TO than assists for his career.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:14 AM
True…but then again the only reason Rudy Gays perceived value was so high was because the Grizzlies gave him a horrible contract and idiots that follow the NBA saw max money. Must be a good player.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:16 AM
Basically I feel like Rudy Gay ain’t about this life
January 31st, 2013 at 11:16 AM
Really enjoy not having an NBA team. While the Grizzlies are in-state, Memphis has never felt a part of this state; though I will root for them to win over anyone else while not being a fan.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:16 AM
Their preseason win o/u was around 32, so that’s a lot to ask
Can’t kill the Raps. Nobody is signing there as a FA. Calderon is an expiring contract. Davis’ playing time would be limited when Bargnani gets healthy, who also has two yrs left on his deal.
Also, Gay was easily the best player in the deal. Not sure I make the trade, but the anti-Toronto sentiments have been overstated
January 31st, 2013 at 11:17 AM
Sadly, one of those idiots is Bryan Colangelo. I have no idea how he remains employed.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:17 AM
Shamburger just shit his pants.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:18 AM
I expect that to go up with the offense more tailored/focused on him
January 31st, 2013 at 11:19 AM
YYSA, yep to all that.
The previous owner was at one point looking to move from Memphis. Attendance was way down, the team was losing big. Heisley overpaid Gay to convince the locals the team was worth watching.
How was Heisley to know the Marc Gasol/Z-Bo combination would grow to be the nucleus of a pretty good team?
I just wish they’d traded Gay to Cleveland instead of Speights (he said over and over). Sorry, Spencer & scripty.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:21 AM
Rudy Gay is a good player. He’s overpaid, but so is almost everyone between the max and mid-level. That’s was the structure of the last CBA
January 31st, 2013 at 11:21 AM
As a former & future Memphian, I ruefully giggle at that remark.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:21 AM
Everytime I hear his name, I can’t help but think of Like a Bosh LOL
Laughing all the way to the bank and collecting NBA title rings.
/eh, thought the broken ankles was more like Joe Jonhson nudging Bosh into the other Heat player.
//I believe Bosh after the game asked, “Who won the game?”
January 31st, 2013 at 11:21 AM
that was*
January 31st, 2013 at 11:22 AM
I don’t. Been watching him play for too many years.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:23 AM
Thought the NFL fan graph from yesterday’s roundup was interesting. Whole state of TN were Titans fans except for Shelby County. I gots nothin’ but love for Memphis. Just so far away
January 31st, 2013 at 11:24 AM
45% career
January 31st, 2013 at 11:26 AM
I expect it could get worse. If he’s the Raps #1 option on offense, other teams are going to gameplan for him and he’ll draw extra attention. I see a lot of contested shots and a spike in turnovers.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:28 AM
Culturally, it’s really an extension of Mississippi (Elvis) or Arkansas (John Daly), right?
January 31st, 2013 at 11:28 AM
This is part of the reason I want the Suns to just target the guy they want to overpay now and trade for him and maybe get some money going the other way. This is what I’m trying to say.
Or this.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:29 AM
No different than Memphis. If the coach is smart (not too familiar with him) they will play a lot more open court basketball than the Grizz ever would. Lowry, Derozan, Gay is a terrifying transition group
January 31st, 2013 at 11:31 AM
Memphis’ best hope in the postseason is to be a matchup nightmare in the post for someone. Without that, they have no hope of making a run in the West. They lack a player who is going to be able to get them consistent buckets from the perimeter against playoff defenses.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:32 AM
Do people care about hoops in that neck of the woods? Always seemed a bizarre NBA locale to me
January 31st, 2013 at 11:33 AM
Bill Snyder signed a five year deal. He really is going to die on the sidelines.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:34 AM
I meant open as in he won’t have 2 big men clogging the lane like in Memphis. I was thinking maybe a change of scenery would help him but I’m overthinking it. Toronto probably got screwed here.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:34 AM
I assume this has been covered today but the map of NFL allegiance indicates that Jets fan are a majority of NFL fans in only Nassau County. Giants win everywhere else in the greater New York area.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:35 AM
OKC-Memphis would be interesting. KD would kill them obviously, but could see Tony Allen handling Westbrook. In that case, the ego-maniacal Westbrook would continue to jack up 22 shot per game, at a startlingly inefficient rate
January 31st, 2013 at 11:37 AM
Really? I always think of Memphis as a huge basketball city. Maybe because it was a super high school hotbed when I was younger, and of course Memphis (St.) was quite a power there for a while.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:41 AM
Memphis is definitely a basketball city.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:42 AM
tony allen is a bad man
him v. artest, who ya got?
him v. andre miller?
who is the baddest mamajama nba player?
January 31st, 2013 at 11:42 AM
You are correct, sir.
Huge basketball city. That is one reason I couldn’t help but laugh at Marshall Henderson. Nearly every gym in the city has loads of 6’2″ chuckers with bad shooting percentages. Nothing special.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:42 AM
Alaska really is as bad as it sounds.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:44 AM
Didn’t know John Wall was still playing hoops.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:46 AM
Losing him was the underplayed fall of the Celtics. I got Andre Miller though. Artest is clearly crazy. Allen will scrap. But Andre Miller just gives an icy glare. Nobody goes at Andre Miller
Same thing with suburban CT
January 31st, 2013 at 11:47 AM
Love Allen as a player. Artest is 6’7″, probably 245 lbs or so. Mostly muscle, mostly crazy.
Remember how he broke Jordan’s ribs in a pickup game? Don’t remember hearing anyone say Jordan got in Artest’s face then. Or ever.
January 31st, 2013 at 11:47 AM
Oh yea. In other news, Obama was re-elected, The Red Sox broke the Curse of the Bambino, and the Mayans were wrong
January 31st, 2013 at 11:48 AM
The man has witnessed a murder by table leg. Jordan doesn’t phase
January 31st, 2013 at 11:50 AM
It’s now a race between Snyder and Jerry Kill.
/ Tasteless, and it feels so good
January 31st, 2013 at 11:51 AM
Unnecessary and off-target, almost disrupting the play, but sure let’s crown him.
January 31st, 2013 at 12:03 PM
Is Kevin Duckworth still alive?
January 31st, 2013 at 12:09 PM
late, but just look at who is the worst player in the league at finishing at the hoop.
January 31st, 2013 at 12:23 PM
He struggled to finish in college as well. “Getting to the hoop” doesnt mean much if you cant finish AND lack the court vision to find the open man on a kick-out.
