Chris Culliver of the 49ers to Artie Lange on Having a Gay Teammate: “gotta get up out of here” [UPDATE: Audio]
Chris Culliver, a second year cornerback on the 49ers, did an interview with comedian Artie Lange, and Super Bowl week is about to get interesting. During what has been a slow week in New Orleans, Culliver’s comments on having a gay teammate – especially in the wake of these Kwame Harris court documents – will probably make headlines everywhere shortly. Via the Mercury News:
“I don’t do the gay guys man,” Culliver said. “I don’t do that. No, we don’t got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do.
“Can’t be with that sweet stuff. Nah … can’t be … in the locker room man. Nah.”
Culliver suggested that homosexual athletes keep their sexuality private until 10 years after they retire.
Sigh.
I haven’t heard the Lange interview yet, but we’re looking for audio. The 49ers haven’t had a comment yet. [Mercury News; Audio via Yahoo]

Artie Lange is still alive?
January 30th, 2013 at 4:38 PM
Dude is from South Carolina, right? And he’s black and most likely was raised a Southern Baptist. Sadly none of what he said is either shocking or against the norm for his demographic.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:38 PM
Yeah, let’s have the 49′ers say they don’t condone what was said. Later a PR team will issue a fake apology and that will fix that.
Is anybody really surprised an NFL player would admit he’d be uncomfortable with a gay teammate? Or that they wouldn’t want a gay player on their team? Behind closed doors, I’m gonna guess 90+% of them are in tune with this guy.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:39 PM
this. is. SHOCKING.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:39 PM
Sounds intelligent.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:39 PM
Someone ask Ray Lewis the same question….Y’know, since he is all about the bible.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:39 PM
Well, at least he doesn’t play in a city that has a large gay population.
I’m sure it will play well in San Francisco.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:40 PM
so, who did Artie pick to with the Super Bowl?
January 30th, 2013 at 4:40 PM
How thoughtful of him. Sadly stuff like this is probably a commonly held belief in locker rooms. It’s why people who think we’re almost to the point where current players come out are probably a bit naive.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:41 PM
not shocking that he thinks it, but that he said it. especially during super bowl week.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:41 PM
“I don’t do the gay guys man,” Culliver said. “I don’t do that. No, we don’t got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do.
You do not like to engage in sexual activities with other men. We got it. Thanks. Go enjoy the house you own which was probably decorated by a gay guy.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:42 PM
Yet another reason I don’t feel bad these guys are going to be slobbering cripples by the time they’re forty.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:42 PM
Good luck next year Nancy Te’O.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:42 PM
The gays are gonna pound his ass!
/Happy Endings.
//You all need to watch that show
January 30th, 2013 at 4:43 PM
obviously, Chris Culliver is Lennay Kekua.

Vernon Davis
/because he has a design co.

i refuse to believe anything on ABC is funny or worthwhile.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:45 PM
I’m sure Manti Te’o is very aware of this.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:45 PM
Jets will be drafting him. Need a loudmouth to replace Bart Scott. A relationship with Tebow will ensue
January 30th, 2013 at 4:46 PM
Friend, I believed that too..however, after downloading..I mean buying the first two seasons and going on a marathon session of the series I can tell you that it is indeed pretty damn great.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:46 PM
Am I crazy for thinking there wasn’t a post here on Flacco saying “retarded”? That seems like wheelhouse material.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:48 PM
update, now with audio.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:48 PM
I imagine Artie was egging him on the whole time while laughing himself into convulsions.
Or strung out on heroin.
Either way, I’d like to witness the postgame handshake between Culliver and Brendon Ayanbadejo.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:48 PM
A shame, since I love him as a player, but it ‘s hardly a niche belief in NFL locker rooms, I’m sure.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:49 PM
As for locker room gayness, can’t get much gayer than Charles Haley
January 30th, 2013 at 4:50 PM
Skoal, brother.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:50 PM
Is Artie coming back here to deliver another hilarious NFL pick for the Super Bowl?
January 30th, 2013 at 4:51 PM
Exactly. It’s a sad reality. It must really suck being a gay athlete in the pros. I can’t imagine having to hide that part of your life.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:51 PM
Go enjoy the house you own which was probably decorated by a gay guy.
You’re a retarded stereotypist.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:51 PM
Just a tad bit harsh, no?
January 30th, 2013 at 4:52 PM
I at least applaud his honesty.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:52 PM
Fucking Madrid. Equalized late in the 2nd half against Barca. At least it was in Madrid.

I see what you did there …
January 30th, 2013 at 4:54 PM
Listening to the audio, it was odd how he was harshly against homesexuality but very pro-teabagging.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:54 PM
Hell of a line
January 30th, 2013 at 4:54 PM
Really? I get liking honesty and all that, but when you’re being a homophobe I’d rather not applaud any of what he said.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:55 PM
Agreed. Most players still live in the hood.
/I base this all off an episode of Madden Nation 5 years ago.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:55 PM
Yeah and the reason they make that choice is they’ll be outcast.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:56 PM
Makes no different if you choose to do it or are told to. The simple fact of the matter is that gay athletes feel the need to hide their sexual persuasion, and that sucks.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:57 PM
This is what happens when you mix soy sauce and underwear.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:58 PM
Seeing how concerned these players are with what the jerseys and helmets look like, I would wager a guess that there is far more gays in football than we think.
Word on the street is at least 50% of the Oregon Duck players are gay. I will have to check my source.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:58 PM
This is interesting. Do we applaud people for being honest racists?
January 30th, 2013 at 4:59 PM
“And with the 32nd selection in the 2013 National Football League draft … the San Francisco 49ers choose Notre Dame linebacker Manti T’eo.”

Another earthquake – geesh.

January 30th, 2013 at 4:59 PM
This is interesting. Do we applaud people for being honest racists?
Context is everything.
January 30th, 2013 at 4:59 PM
“I at least have to applaud DW Griffith’s honesty.”
January 30th, 2013 at 5:00 PM
LOLz.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:00 PM
a) He could’ve lied and said he’d be fine with it which accomplishes nothing
b) He could’ve said “no comment” which wouldn’t have gotten him in trouble, but we’d all know what he meant
c) He told the truth and as I said before, I’m sure it’s in line with what 90+% of his teammates think. The reality is that the football culture does not tolerate gay people (for the most part). Everyone knows this, including gay people, who can choose to have nothing to do with it as a result of their sexuality. Is that fair? Probably not. But what is fair?
January 30th, 2013 at 5:00 PM
Tony Dungy is a huge cunt.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:00 PM
LOLz x2
January 30th, 2013 at 5:01 PM
“I at least have to applaud DW Griffith’s honesty.”
When you consider that Birth of a Nation coincided with the beliefs or at least the sentiments of a majority of the country at the time, I think you’re point is invalid.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:01 PM
And 70 years ago, white baseball players were saying the same thing about black baseball players.
And yeah, this guy probably echoes the sentiments of a lot of pro athletes (read: dumb jocks). Is anyone really surprised by this?
January 30th, 2013 at 5:01 PM
I think you’re misinterpreting that. The word is that 100% of Oregon Duck players got fucked by their coach, who was 49 and has never been married.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:01 PM
Goddammitt….your, not you’re.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:01 PM
So, the NFL needs to higher a Chief Diversity Officer now.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:01 PM
Disagree. Even if he lied, people talking about how a Super Bowl starter is okay with it would be a good thing.
Not applauding him and instead calling him a dickface.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:02 PM
Nope. Not anymore. But the football culture hasn’t reached a point with gay people like we have with race. We’re beyond racism in sports (by and large). Not so with sexuality. Meaning Culliver is not behind the times in the environment of his sport.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:02 PM
If there was a gay guy on the team, does anyone think Culliver would actually do anything?
Seems to me a guy answering a question honestly, who would prefer an all straight team. Not a huge deal
January 30th, 2013 at 5:03 PM
Do you really thing THAT many of those guys think that way? 90%? I doubt 90% of his teammates are even straight, just based on percentages. From what I can tell, people my age just don’t care, by and large. Culliver would obviously be an exception.
It’s almost funny that he plays for a team from San Francisco, this shouldn’t play well at home. I can imagine a lot of 49er fans cringing when they hear this.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:03 PM
Is that fair? Probably not. But what is fair?
One of my least favorite spins.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:05 PM
Yeah, I’ll agree it was a bad way to end the point I was trying to make.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:05 PM
I could see him ostracizing the player or venting to management about him. So yes.
Blatant discrimination is no biggie, brah.
/he said while hitting up the Axe body spray
January 30th, 2013 at 5:05 PM
Nope. Not anymore. But the football culture hasn’t reached a point with gay people like we have with race. We’re beyond racism in sports (by and large). Not so with sexuality. Meaning Culliver is not behind the times in the environment of his sport.
I think is a perfectly valid point. It’s also unfortunate, but mindsets don’t change overnight.

At least they are honest with themselves.

I’ve never heard someone say they didn’t like Shawshank.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:09 PM
True. Especially in Italy, those dudes are super racist. And mind you, I absolutely love Italy, but holy shit. As I recall, Juventus has had to play in empty arenas because of that.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:09 PM
As long as he treats him professionally, it isn’t discrimination. You can’t legislate how people feel
January 30th, 2013 at 5:10 PM

I thought that was James Buchanan.
/Chris Culliver’d
//just kidding, I doubt he knows who James Buchanan was
January 30th, 2013 at 5:14 PM
I think his underlying point is highly admirable. We should not have gay sex all over the locker room. That is just wrong.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:15 PM
I just didn’t like how it ended with the two lovers inside the joint becoming a gay beach couple.
That’s quite the subtextual analysis there. Also pretty progressive to pair a middle-aged white man with a middle-aged black man who claims he’s Irish. Stephen King was quite ahead of his time.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:15 PM
If it’s ok for a woman to be uncomfortable undressing in front of a man, if it’s ok for men and women who happen to be on the same team, or members of the same gym to have seperate lockerooms, why would it be considered being a homophobe for a man to not want to be in the same lockerroom as a gay teammate?
January 30th, 2013 at 5:15 PM

January 30th, 2013 at 5:15 PM
I think the “Andy dazzles the yard with opera” scene reinforces that perception.
/ Stereotyp-ist
January 30th, 2013 at 5:15 PM
Interesting statements from Chris Culliver. Wonder if he would say this to Kwame Harris’ face? Somehow I don’t think so.

I don’t think as many players are homophobic as people think. These guys go to college, many live in very high gay-populated city. They’re not all completely ignorant backwards idiots. The problem is the ignorant backwards idiots are louder and influence the culture more than the more enlightened players.
January 30th, 2013 at 5:36 PM

January 30th, 2013 at 6:05 PM
other than the equipment in question, why wouldn’t you consider it the same thing?
January 30th, 2013 at 6:07 PM
if there was a long-time societal trend of objectification and sexual assault of straight men by gay men, then yes, you can compare Culliver’s comments with women not wanting to disrobe in front of men.
but there isn’t, so straight men can’t pretend to be the victimized minority here.
January 30th, 2013 at 6:12 PM
No. You’re missing the difference, homophobia is – by definition – irrational in most cases. Unless this guy was gang raped by a bunch of flaming queens in a locker room, there is nothing for him to worry about. Being uncomfortable around people of a different sexual orientation only because of their sexual orientation is the definition of homophobia. It’s not necessarily a negative term though usually it is used as one, it just is what the person has. I’m afraid of spiders though there’s virtually no chance one will actually kill me. Women have very real reason to be uncomfortable disrobing in front of men, what with the thousands of years of social and legal domination.
January 30th, 2013 at 6:13 PM
The “heterophobia” argument was created by LGBT rights opponents, it’s the reverse discrimination of gender issues. There are only a handful of researchers in the world who buy into the argument.
January 30th, 2013 at 6:19 PM
There are women who report in the locker rooms and see guys without much in the way of clothing and I don’t see any stories of rape. And gender and sexuality are clearly two different things. It’s a non-starter as an argument given if you’ve ever used a communal shower, you HAVE showered with non-straight people present and unless you’re consistently hit on when doing so, then there is no reason to be uncomfortable beyond the fact you hold irrational bias.
January 30th, 2013 at 6:38 PM
Spot on.
January 30th, 2013 at 6:57 PM
It’s easy to say there is nothing to worry or be concerned about when it isn’t your ass (not literally) on the line. The idea that homosexuals are any different than heterosexuals in their ability to objectify those of the opposite, or in their case, same sex is naive.
January 30th, 2013 at 7:08 PM
and we all know that gay men have always victimized straight men, and that they are deviants who cannot help but try to put their penis in anything. I’m going to go ahead and assume that you don’t actually know any gay people.
January 30th, 2013 at 8:06 PM
If you have a gym membership and use the locker room, chances are you have been showering and changing with a gay dude in the room. I’m also going to bet that he didn’t try to put his dick in your ass. Bunch a fucking ignorant souls up in here.
January 30th, 2013 at 9:39 PM
I apologize for offending your paper thin multicultural sensibilities. But I deal in the real world, and in the real world homosexuals aren’t any different (other than the obvious preferences) than heterosexuals as it pertains to sexual desires and attitudes. Just as there are varying degrees of desires and attitudes from heteros, the same is true for homos. These attitudes and judgements are why most men and women would prefer to be seperate, not some sense of potential victimization. Acknowledging this about gays isn’t close minded. Ignoring this for the sake of some misguided sense of acceptance is.
January 30th, 2013 at 11:35 PM
I guess we should look forward to having separate locker rooms for men, women and gays. Quite a world Darrell is leading us toward. Separate but equal worked well the first time.
January 31st, 2013 at 1:07 AM
darrell – so if someone said “i don’t want to drink out of the coloreds water fountain” would that be A OK as well?
January 31st, 2013 at 4:59 AM
The fact we have someone comparing gender issues to sexual orientation issues is almost as amusing as it is pathetic.
January 31st, 2013 at 7:32 AM
In a world that has bastardized Dr. King’s and the rest of the civil right’s movement down to one small portion of his I Have A Dream speech, I’d expect that kind of comparison. There is a difference than the two.
January 31st, 2013 at 7:33 AM
Or if you have a tiny penis.
January 31st, 2013 at 7:47 AM
That is a stupid comparison. Gender issues is a broader subject than sexual orientation. Equal pay is a gender issue. Sexual relations is what we’re talking about. A man being uncomfortable disrobing in front of an openly gay man or a woman being uncomfortable disrobing in front of a lesbian isn’t about being anti gay, it is about sexual relations, how we all relate sexually.
